fluffles and nippas..

quick question - honestly how easy is it to get on with the nippas? would be using them from about 3/4 weeks old, (also need to teach DH to use them)

and does anyone have any ideas of when the fluffles are going to be aplix? (i'd rather go with this style for ease althou I've heard the velcro can go funny??)

so experienced MNetters what would u suggest to a first time mum with first time real nappies? - nippas or aplix?

(and finally prob odd question but nippas wouldn't hurt baby once he's big enough to sit up would they?? - wouldn't like to think of them diggin into baby's tummy)

they are quite flexable, and wont hurt as they have the nappy cushioning anyway.

this is how i do it, put nappy on, hold nappy with one hand, place nippa on the left of the nappy, stretch to other side of the nappy and grip there with the next bit of nippa, then pull down the central part. it ends up looking like a Y. very easy to do, and the fit is better than aplix.

dep one u'd recommend for a first timer? - cos I was thinking it doesn't really matter what it looks like as the wrap will be going over the top.

They are excellent, I used them from the word go with our baby, on our prefolds. What Misdee said is the easiest way to put the nippa, there is an excellent video clip on the tots bots website here: How to put on a nappy nippa . I always find I understand things a bit better when I have seen them done.
Velcro (or Aplix as the stuff on nappies normally is) does go a bit ratty looking after being washed for a few months, but it is easily adjustable. Poppers I like the idea of, but find them hard to get exact as my ds is a superwriggler.
Nippas win for me, as you can put them on a wriggler very quickly and get a good fit. Of course if you start on a littlie, you get good at it, with a nice stationary baby.
Good luck with your nappies, you'll get lots of help on this forum.

they look better than aplix IMO. easy easy to use. i had to use them with aplix nappies with dd2 as she was big (i started with cloth when she was just under 1yr old) and kept iundoing the aplix.

dd3 is only 6.5months, and can already undo her nappies unless they are nippa'd in place.

i actually prefer pins to be honest

Ericblack · 13/09/2005 20:43

Nippas a miracle and you can get them in Boots. And my husband worked it out immediately.

motherpeculiar · 13/09/2005 20:52

much better fit with nippas ime

(although I am paranoid I'll find myself out and about with a nippa needing nappy to change into and no nippa )

munz · 13/09/2005 22:36

ok so i'm going with size 2 with nippas - that should be ok for a 4 week old to potty training??- the fluffles and bamboozles.

beprepared for the big bummed look.

munz · 14/09/2005 07:49

oooh do u think size one would be a snugger fit? that's the only decision left to make, and so far i'm being guided by u 'old timers' lol, thought size 2 so we wouldn't need to buy any more. lol.

motherpeculiar · 14/09/2005 11:09

you'll be out of size 1 in no time. go for size 2, you should be ok I would think.

is your babe born yet?

personally I wouldn't buy a billion of anything til you have had babe and nappy in hand for a while and see what you like best. I personally loved tots first but the big bum put me off after a while and now I seem to be migrating to fuzzis

apols if this has been said before, haven't time to go thro' whole thread

maisiemog · 14/09/2005 11:50

That's interesting about the size 1 not fitting for long.
Did most people buy a size 1 tots and then move to size 2?
What size/weight/height does a size 1 tots fit and when do most people move to the size 2?

RosiePosie · 14/09/2005 12:00

Aplix is a pain - all the nappies get stuck to each other in the wash and it fades and looks horrid quite quickly. Nippas really aren't hard to use. Actually though - my fave fastening is poppers. The fluffles will be available in poppers, but not for a little while.

flamesparrow · 14/09/2005 12:18

I love nippas - always felt I could get a much better fit than with aplix.

I plan to go for size ones. Size 2 are bulky enough as it is - the thought of trying to get clothes over one folded over to fit a little baby sounds like a nightmare to me.

maisiemog · 14/09/2005 13:01

I must admit, I don't like using very big nappies on teenies. We used Cotton Bottoms prefolds on our ds - who turned out to be 3 weeks early and weighed 5lbs 8oz. I was so glad that I had the newborn size for him as even they looked large - I hated putting nappies on him that were too large, they were practically up to his armpits.
He stayed in newborn size until he was about 11lbs, which was at least a couple of months (my memory of that time is a bit hazy )
When we went up to the small size, they just looked stupidly large.
I prefer a nappy to look cute and for me that is when it is the right size for the baby.

munz · 14/09/2005 13:16

def going for the size 1's then as we plan on using them for more than one baby - 9 months is a good wear for me for one set - then i'll get size 2 multi pack. think nippas are def the way to go (might get a couple of aplix for DH but only 2/3)

motherpeculiar · 14/09/2005 16:23

ah, you see my DD was 10lbs at birth and piled the weight on quickly - I had forgotten that vital fact

mind you - we used muslin squares to great effect in the early days, with nippa

flamesparrow · 14/09/2005 17:27

DH was just as useless with aplix as nippa

Eventually I told him he'd just have to learn to nippa as I didn't like aplix, and he managed it fine.

misdee · 14/09/2005 17:32

dd2 started in size 3's at undera year old. just bear that in mind.

starlover · 14/09/2005 18:19

hmm i have a size one tots and it still fits ds and he is just over 20lb
he is also on the 96th centile for height! and is 7months old
