quick question - honestly how easy is it to get on with the nippas? would be using them from about 3/4 weeks old, (also need to teach DH to use them)

and does anyone have any ideas of when the fluffles are going to be aplix? (i'd rather go with this style for ease althou I've heard the velcro can go funny??)

so experienced MNetters what would u suggest to a first time mum with first time real nappies? - nippas or aplix?

(and finally prob odd question but nippas wouldn't hurt baby once he's big enough to sit up would they?? - wouldn't like to think of them diggin into baby's tummy)

should mention that at about 10-12months old dd2 did weigh over 30lb. she was 9lb at birth.

starlover · 14/09/2005 18:45

ds was 9lb 1

misdee · 14/09/2005 18:48

well he may catch up lol. dd2 did go off the charts from about 6months till now. she never lost weight, but gained more height. she has always been tall and heavey.

I've always found nippas really hard to use. Can never get the hooks to grip. And then I find the nappy sags and ends up slung on the hips.

Applix, on the other hand - dead easy but now my nappies are on their second baby, some of the applix is not so sticky any more. Tots applix nappies have an extra bit so you can fold back the tabs so they don't get stuck on things in the wash.

I wouldn't buy a whole set of any one sort - best to wait and see what you get on with (and what size/proportion of baby you get!).

My tots size 1 lasted dd from 2 to 10 months. And ds is in them at 7 months. I do breed tiddlers though.

Now more experienced mums might be able to help me.
This is my first baby and I have read that they get bigger (or fatter) towards the end of their first year and then smaller, or something like that.
Is this true?
Do nappies get too small and then big again?
We seem to be in between sizes medium and large at the moment and it's a nightmare, poop everywhere!
His size two tots (doesn't really wear tots much) seems to be fine though - I think he weighs around 20lbs (hasn't been weighed for a while)
He isn't tall and has a long thin torso and short legs - like a duck. Quack! A cute duck.

misdee · 14/09/2005 20:11

basically, once they start moving more, then lose some of their chubbyness. they dont lose weight but in a way do thin out.

Ericblack · 14/09/2005 20:40

I used the same Motherease and Sandys nappies for the whole time my first was in them. The adjustable poppers just meant they fit all the time and they are supposed to be one size anyway. I don't think you can generalise about them getting fatter and thinner as neither of my babies ever seem(ed) to get very fat at any stage. It's good fun to have a selection of different nappies that suit you if you can afford it though. Absolutely agree with all those MNers who say they LOVE nappies and their accessories!

Nippas are really easy to use. I like them.

Maisiemog - you've got a duck and i've got a giraffe. (Long and lanky legged!).

The giraffe turned into an ant when i put him in a tot bots at a week old. He sloped into a 45 degree angle. I was worried he was going to get a head rush! Left it until tonight to put him in a tot bots again - he's nearly 11 wks and looks far less like an ant now. Which is always good.

vkone · 16/09/2005 15:24

Nippas were invented by a man, so if DH can't work them ...

I found them reeally easy and always used them for night nappies (due to the huge amount of padding needed)

I think theres a bit of an issue with fluffles & velcro as the microterry and velcro just don't mix (and you couldn't fold them down for a smaller nappy). Have you thought of doing a hire scheme www.eco-babes.co.uk do one, where you try lots of different ones and then buy what works for you.

My dh said "what are they for?" when i got some nippas at first and now he's better than me at putting them on and it's his preferred method of nappy fastening.

even MIL and my mum use them, so not that difficult, honestly.

flowerfairy · 16/09/2005 20:58

oh forgot to say I always found my tots with applix very bulky fitting aacross the tummy, It never seemed to hug ds, just sort of laid flat to him, if you understnd that.

eidsvold · 17/09/2005 09:27

i bought my nippas ( when in the UK) from Boots very reasonable price.

Love nippas - easy to secure even with the wriggly worm that is dd2.
