Me and DS have a bit of a sing song after stories when he is tucked up in bed (he is 2.9). We always always have to start with twinkle twinkle and baa baa black sheep but now I need some inspiration past nursery rhymes!

Songs I like to sing:

morningtown (train whistle blowing, makes a sleepy noise, ...)

my grandfather's clock (lovely rhythym, love the line 'it was bought on the morn of the day that he was born')

we went to the animal fair

victorian music hall types songs, eg My Old Man

I like to sing "This is Halloween, this is halloween, everybody scream...." Grin {evil mummy emotion} I wouldn't recommend it for a two year old though.

We do a lot of songs here.

I sing the Hush Little Baby as it calms them down (especially in middle of night) and has done since they were born (are now 4 and 2, they call it the Mummy song Grin )

Rock a bye baby
wheels on the bus
12345
hickory dickory dock
grand old duke of york
row row the boat
peter rabbit had a fly upon his nose
little red tractor
all the bunnies sleeping

and more. granted some of these are not best just before bed!!

I don't know the tunes to lots of these! Thanks for replying.

DS is probably the only person I know who believes I can sing in tune!

I need to google Hush Little Baby as I can't remember what comes after diamond ring

Hush, little baby, don't say a word.
Papa's gonna buy you a mockingbird

And if that mockingbird won't sing,
Papa's gonna buy you a diamond ring

And if that diamond ring turns brass,
Papa's gonna buy you a looking glass

And if that looking glass gets broke,
Papa's gonna buy you a billy goat

And if that billy goat won't pull,
Papa's gonna buy you a cart and bull

And if that cart and bull turn over,
Papa's gonna buy you a dog named Rover

And if that dog named Rover won't bark
Papa's gonna buy you a horse and cart

And if that horse and cart fall down,
You'll still be the sweetest little baby in town.

PuppyMonkey · 17/10/2010 20:01

I have a fabulous repertoire of naff so gs that DD2 aged 3 now knows off by heart too:

Two little boys

Consider yourself

The big rock candy mountain

I love you ( a bushel and a peck)

What's new pussycat?

Under the bamboo tree

I know an old lady who swallowed a fly

PuppyMonkey · 17/10/2010 20:02

Hilly ho boys

Animal fair

4andnotout · 17/10/2010 20:11

We sing altogether when the
Kids are in the bath, some personal favourites are:
Bye bye blackbird,
Dream a little dream,
You are my sunshine,
Load of old time music hall songs,
3 little ducks,
Jealous guy
Summertime,
Anything by cat Stevens,
The girls are rather partial to Lady Gaga though...

4andnotout · 17/10/2010 20:12

puppymonkey my nan used to sing I love you a bushel and a peck but I can't remember the words, can you tell me?

jinglesticks · 17/10/2010 20:31

I challenge anyone to sing Sweet Child of Mine (lullaby version) to their dc without welling up. (or am I just a wuss)

Lexilicious · 18/10/2010 11:51

jinglesticks I do SCOM quite regularly without welling up. If there was any risk of getting weepy, it would be fast dispelled when I get to the guitar solo and have to concentrate on keeping that soft and lullaby-ish...
