Easiest way to clean up urine (from carpet)???

Any tips. Ds1 has decided to use his bedroom carpet as a toilet (appears to coincide with start of new term- not sure why- he likes school). Have had 5 puddles in the last 2 days- washing and mopping with soapy stuff means it's sodden the whole time. Is there another way?

Change carpet for laminate and simply mop up?

Jimjams · 10/09/2005 18:21

I'm just waiting for it to move back to the bed.

been pondering that soupy- but he's not safe (always leaping off things) and think he could do with some cushioning.

It's the fact he effing laughs as he does it.

omg - I've worked it out- they teach them to use urinals at school- and he likes watching flowing fluids- that's why it's started again- he's been reminded.

Jimjams · 10/09/2005 20:12

Blot with a clean towel (lay it over puddle and walk on it with clean shoes) each time until dryish, then wet with cold water and blot again with another clean towel - then feel and sniff - repeat until fairly dry and not smelly.

Works with coffee etc.

If smelly later use bicarb on it.

Jimjams · 10/09/2005 20:21

oh god you realise he's weed on it 5 times in 2 days (and been at school for one of those days). Maybe I should get laminate (then he'll slip in it won't he?)

Nooo, jj, just buy lots of cheap towels.

spidermama · 10/09/2005 20:24

Oh God! I ended up pulling up the carpet after an episode of this made our house smell like the mens loos at London Bridge station.

basketcase · 10/09/2005 20:24

Jim jams - is it one particular corner or location? Could you get a cheap rug (or old bit of carpet) that you could put down and wash easily? Just a thought.
Loads of sympathy. Hope this phase comes to an end soon. Agree with the bicarb trick - we used to do this with cat pee and it worked a treat, and believe me, cat pee is much much worse...

Jimjams · 10/09/2005 20:57

It's all over the place. We used to have an old cotbed matress in there (he has a den under his bed- it's one of those raised ones) and he always used to wee on that- so as soon as he stopped doing that I binned it- for a long time it was his bed, but we waterproofed everything- now its everywhere on the floor. i think I need to have a word with school and see what they are teaching him!

Have to agree with the bicarb too. I also have a spray bottle filled with water to which I add a few drops of teetree oil and either lavender oil/crushed sage/rosemary or/and some aloe vera goo or anything else I can think of that makes its smell nice and spray this on the carpet and round the room. Am getting good at this as dd has decided to potty train herself [groan] well before Id planned.

Jimjams · 10/09/2005 22:18

That's a good idea- will do that- think we're in for the long haul with this one.

Have you checked out cork tiles like they have in bathrooms. THey can be quite soft I think or possibly lino with a soft backing under neath sure I saw that on one of these decorating progs. Mind you prob cost the earth as all of it does. 'this is lovely and quite cheap at £50 a sq yrd. Just the thing for the kids b'room. Itll last for 3 to 4 years. ' (pass the bucket this way please)

Jimjams · 10/09/2005 22:52

yes - they do ones with pebbles/sand prints on- but very pricey....

Ahem, Shaws Stain and Odour Remover (Pump spray). You can get it from specialist pet stores (sorry, we were dog owners before being parents ). Very very effective product. You can also get it online from www.toppetshop.co.uk. Though...you will need to remove the excess of liquid before adding the product.

Regarding alternative flooring, Wicanders makes a very nice cork flooring that comes in planks (the ones I have seen looked really stylish, nothing to do with the cork tiles of 20-30 yrs ago)
