hub2dee's first ever cloth nappy day

Well, not for me, but for munchkin: After so much chit chat, and procrastination, I've put a cloth nappy on dd !!!!!

I'm using a selection of nappies Gski lent us... (thanks BTW X)

First off:

10AM: Motherease Sandy's in a Rikki Xsm wrap....

Lovely and soft, nicer than dispie paper stuff... decent fit.

Noon - bugger. Went for a walk in the pram and sprung a leak. I didn't tuck the nappy 100% into the wrap at the back. Darn darn darn. Change of clothes. Also sheet in daycot.

OK, now she's in a TotsBots size1 with a Motherease Airflow Small.
Lovely and soft. Goes on easily. Aplix is easier than poppers for my big fingers.

The nappy had a sewn in booster thingy, with an additional fleecy material (ie. a sewn in booster plus sewn in liner...).. I've tried to do a vaguely sensible fold, but not sure I've done what best for containment for a girl...

Let's hope this one doesn't leak cos she's off shopping with dw in a baby bjorn, and the wrap was a tiny bit loose....

I think I need nappy lessons to make this work, LOL.

You lovely, lovely dad!
I just wanted to sahre that with the group!
Your bound to have a few teething problems, but stick with it, you'll get there.
Much admiration and respect - TC x

well done for starting with cloth. we didn't make the switch until ds was 17 months so no tips, sorry!

keep us all updated

(can't believe you ended up with a baby bjorn after all your talk of fancy pant slings!!)

TC... well, 10 out of 10 for trying, but maybe only 5 out of 10 so far for PRACTICALITY / EFFICIENCY / RESULTS !!!!!

LOL (ooooooh... by the way - may I do yet another (yawn) mention of a new photo album I uploaded of Camille yesterday (see 1-8 week album here ))

I hope to jump on teething problems pretty damn quick otherwise I fear cloth stands no chance. .... did so want to make it work.

Is it just me or is this Tots Bots folding diagram unintuitive ?

LOL tassis: no !!!!!! I intend to track down fancy pants sling. BB was loaned to us by friends !

Oh my God, they are the best pictures, god she's just adorable, what a little squiddger (that's a good thing btw!)

Are you a bit of a dab hand with the old camera then hub or does that little pickle, (ohhhh what words can describe that beautiful munchkin?) bring out the best in you?

tassis · 04/09/2005 13:09

The pictures are GORGEOUS.

Nothing wrong with the BB, we loved ours, just thought you were way too cool for someting so common

don't even think about quitting after one day. it'll get easier, you'll get loads of support here, you can quit for a few weeks and try again when she's a bit bigger if you like. You can do this! You know you want to!

The diagram is simplistic because it's not meant to be complicated - it's just pointing out that for a boy more of the material goes to the front, for a girl to the middle.

I think the key thing is to make sure the wrap is covering the nappy.

hub2dee · 04/09/2005 13:22

Yes, I must admit to having limited knowledge of girls and pee. Maybe dw can decript the image when she comes back, LOL.

Yes, TC, I do like taking photos. Started as a kid, on film of course, and now about to make a giant leap to digital SLR (ie. not my small point and shoot which I've been using for a couple of years, but a great big PROPPER camera)...

Hopefully I'll be able to get loads more decent shots with the new camera. Have contemplated doing some shots for other people if I get the hang of it and can improve my technique. Pitshanger park meetup ???? (used to live in Ealing - you live somewhere closeish, no ?)

Yes I have, miss.

BTW - re: "rinse the wrap through" - do you mean wipe with damp cloth, dry with a towel and put back on baby OR rinse in warm water till sodden, allow to dry, put back on baby ?

Thanks for your input tassis.

hi hub2dee, I used totsbots from birth (big boy though - almost 9lb) and found the totsbots lycra wraps best - easier to stretch over the nappy all ways and lightweight for the babe. Good luck!

tassis · 04/09/2005 14:18

didn't cross my mind to wipe the wrap - I just kept using it until it got stinky.

rule of thumb was that he got a clean one each morning and it would do him for the day unless it got poo on it (which didn't really happen until he hit 2)

has anyone noticed that this is all in past tense? I must go and post my potty training success story!!

hub2dee · 04/09/2005 15:12

Thanks, miss Gski. All clear. (BTW - am planning to send your stuff first class tomorrow - hopefully you'll get Tuesday / latest Weds that way.)

tassis: you bad mummy slacker ... like your style And potty trained ? Yay !

ediemay: (lovely name BTW - your two kids ? one ?) - 15:00 - Orange tots (properly folded for a girl) with tots lycra wrap on dd as we speak !!!

Last nappy - poo, pretty wet, no leaks ! Yay !

Lovely pics Hub

I am so glad that I am past the nappy stage - in my day I used good old fashioned terries with good old fashioned pins, with origami style folding and un-PC plastic pants. No leaks!

Good luck in your endeavours down the nappy trail

mears · 04/09/2005 15:23

BTW - what is difficult about the diagram? Thought you were clever

chipmonkey · 04/09/2005 16:19

I use Fuzzi bunz and Minkies, therefore no wrap, thats how I get over the nappy-sticking-out-of wrap problem! Hub2dee my computer froze when I clicked on your homepage so will have to assume Camille is as cute as ever!

chipmonkey · 04/09/2005 16:19

mears, he's a man, he just thinks he's clever!

Am on second baby in cloth nappies and have finally worked out the wrap thing. I have a clothes peg on a hook by the nappy mat. At each change the wrap goes on the peg to air and the one on the peg goes on the baby. Alternate wraps all day/night. First thing in the morning, both go in the wash (normal clothes wash or nappy wash, whatever I'm doing that day) and I get 2 clean wraps out. So we have 4 wraps. If a wrap gets poo'd on it goes in the nappy bin.

Some people wash the wraps each evening in the bath water (after the baby comes out).

Those sewn-in fleece liners are a pain. Too many foldy bits.

tissy · 04/09/2005 16:33

slightly loose wrap won't be a problem as long as nappy isn't in contact with clothes outside the wrap.

Tots are great, pretty much bomb-proof, once you get the hang!

hub2dee · 04/09/2005 18:42

mears - ooooh... watch it.

You 'n all chipmonkey.

My problem with the diagram is that it doesn't correspond with the scenario faced by oaf2dee... namely the booster appeared to begin in a different place, and also it doesn't actually tell you how the booster should be folded - which IMHO is two folds to achieve triple thickness (at least for a girl)... PLUS my one had the added complexity of a fleece liner thingy sewn on top too, and that needed a home...

Blimey... best stick to astrophysics.

Pruni: Well I'm delighted I didn't disappoint. Thanks for the compliments on dd. Half of that is me ya know. I think you are also right re: padding... padding is essence of nappy.

fuitful: maginficent information from the inner sanctum of cloth kingdom. Thank you.

Anyway... nappy update: orange tots with CORRECTLY fitted wrap leaked after dd's sleep. as The Nappy Lady says... the soft wrap edging material can wick... also, though, I must have contributed to the c*ck up because the magnificent pad I folded (and topped with the liner) absorbed near enough NO WEE AT ALL.... I think it just hit the fleecey thing and went to the back of the nappy. Damn.

I think chipmonkey on her wrapless Fuzzis and Minkies might be the way to go... hmmm....

We flirted with a MEOS this PM. Got peed on after just a few minutes and a subsequent 'has she pooed' inspection sadly saw the wrap pulled from underneath it and a dispie put on dd.

Phew... a tense day in nappy kingdom.

I think the MEOS also needs dd to be a tad fatter.

I'll do more research and when we feel like giving it another bash will post again.

Thank you for all your input. I'm not giving up yet - just need to find a system which works for us... does make you realise how clever a dispie is though... esp. working (for most of the time, LOL) without a wrap.

The lazy 'All in One' approach might be better for us...

So far the Tots Bots size1 seemed to work the best as it is very efficient at spreading the moisture throughout the nappy...

Laters....
