Introducing knickers and portable potties???

Hi
I have been potty training my dd1 for a week and a half and she has been 100% reliable for the last five days (wees and poos), but only if she is going commando (lol). However I have been putting her back in a nappy if we have gone out and for her nap at lunchtime and obviously overnight. Today I put her in her 'big girl knickers' and she had an accident and then didn't want to wear another pair. She has made it to the loo everytime since. Has anyone any advice as to when to try again with the knickers and how to go about it?
Also how useful do people find the portable potties? Initially she would not go on the potty at all and prefers to use the toilet so I bought one of those fold up seats for toilets to be prepared. As she now uses her potty too should I consider getting a portable potty? DH thinks I am mad as we have a potty, potty chair, folding toilet seat, plastic toilet seat (useless as moved around so much) and one of those seats with steps incorporated so that she can go to the loo independantly (she loves this and this and ditching the knickers was the breakthrough initially) already. . For info dd is 2.5 and we use cloth nappies which she doesn't like to wear anymore yay.

Its very common to be 'trained' when undressed but then accidents when knickers are on. Just be patient and in time she will get the hang of it with knickers, just expect a few more accidents until then.

I didn't use any of the equipment you have listed!! just a plain old potty, but she quickly moved on to using the toilet for wees. I don't have a child seat, she just uses the same as us!

Cooperoo · 21/08/2005 14:45

Thanks Hattie. I know the stuff I have is already a tad excessive . I hasten to add that only the steps and folding seat were bought new....doesn't really sound any better does it lol.
What did you do about going out when you were first training? Did you use nappies then?

For the first couple of weeks she was still having accidents yes i used nappies, despite all the books telling you not to. And then after that she has just always used public loos.

i think i'd start again with knickers tomorrow am, tell her she'll soon get there in time to pull them down without wetting them, and then if she doesn't like the nappies just put her in knickers and take the normal potty out with you, most fit under the buggy or in the car. I'm not bothering with a portable potty, but we also have all the other paraphenalia!
DD has knickers with pictures so she is encouraged not to wet them as Baby Pom, Pooh bear etc wouldn't like it. on the occasions she dribbles, i just change them and ask her to keep the next one dry. She's been training about 4 weeks and i think we are there, it's just a matter of her allowing more time to get there on occasions.
We haven't been back to nappies(except at night) since the first knickers day, is your dd dry through sleeps in the day as mine has been although she doesn't have sleeps everyday. in the car or whilst out, initially i made sure she went before we left and that there were toilets there, but now i don't even worry about that too much. My dd is 2.8, Hope this helps

Didn't use a potty for outigns at all, just got them used to the loo asap (ds preferred a ToodleLoo fold up seat but dd was happy to sit properly). If she will use the loo at home I'd avoid a potty for outings. I think it will save you hassle in the long run as you'd just have a further tansition to make.

Cooperoo · 21/08/2005 20:00

Thank you for your help.
Hattie - Glad you used nappies for out and about with no ill effects despite the books advice. This has concerned me a little.
Loupy - Glad I am not the only one with all the gear! DD does have some pictures on her knickers and I let her choose which ones she wants but she just doesn't seem bothered that she has wet them.. The pictures are only cats and dogs and flowers etc though so perhaps the Tweenies or Fimbles might help if I get desperate.
Liz - Glad you think the seat thing is the way forward. I am avoiding use of the potty in the house if possible as it is obviously less hassle to flush a toilet than empty and clean a potty each time.
I think I will go for the knickers again tomorrow if dd is willing. If not I will try not force or rush the issue and wait another week or so. I guess it is early days still and really she is doing very well so far. The whole thing has been much less traumatic than I expected...although I have probably ruined everything by that comment now!

We are just going throughthe same thing with DD, I have decided that tomorrow Iam going to try the knickers and stick with it for a few days to see if she starts to get the idea! She is fantastic with no bottoms and like your dd doesn't care if she wetsknickers and will happily carry on with what she is doing until I notice! Good luck, I'm glad I'm not the only one with this to overcome this week!!

Cooperoo · 22/08/2005 15:38

Hi SootyRupert
How have you been getting on? I didn't have the energy this morning (dd2 up a lot last night) and then dd1 had an accident this afternoon, so I am waiting a bit longer for the knickers scenario. She has still managed four wees and a poo in the potty/toilet so all is not lost, just think she needs a bit more time....

sootyrupert · 22/08/2005 19:03

We have had probably the best day yet, took dd nappy off when she got up and she managed to use the potty twice pully down her pjs! So I decided to just put her in trousers and she managed a couple more times on the potty pulling down trousers. Had one accident whilst she was eating her lunch and then refused to put on anymore clothes, but has used potty for rest of day with no accidents. Am hoping to get her using potty with trousers for s few days, then will try the dreaded knickers!!

Cooperoo · 23/08/2005 10:46

Oooh. You have inspired me. I saw the HV to get dd2 weighed today and she commented on the mixed signals I am sending dd1 by putting a nappy on for outings etc. She said to be brave lol. So I am and have told dd she doesn't need nappies anymore apart from for sleeps. I am going to stay in and around the house for two or three days and go for the knickers at the weekend when DH is here for support. I feel better having a plan. I had to change her while we were out today and so sat her on the loo in the doctors on her little folding padded seat and she was quite happy with it all so fingers very crossed. Hope you are still getting on well. Keep me posted.

I might try her in a baggy pair of shorts too following your comments. We are in Cyprus so it is very hot at the mo and so she is usually naked while at home although she has been in dresses and knows to pull them up etc.

OP posts:
sootyrupert · 23/08/2005 21:35

dd decided today that she wanted to wear a dress today so she went commando and therefore has been great with the potty! I put knickers on her to go to the shop and she wet herself, although in her defence she did tell me but i was in the middle of paying and forgot totake the portable pottyinto the shop with me, so that one was my fault! I put shorts on her when we got home and whilst i was cooking lunch she pooed and I found her and her ds(10 months) playing with the poo - I just hope ds didnt any any as he eats everything he finds at the moment!! Will keep trying hope things are going well withyou.

gemmamay · 24/08/2005 13:04

Oh my goodnes - I love Mumsnet for this very reason!

I bought DD Knickers yesterday (so cute) but due to the bare bottomed training so far, she first wee-ed in garden through knickers (must have thought they were nappies) then sat on potty with knickers on! Bless she was so chuffed she got there and didn't worry about the wet knickers too much.

She so far has been relieable with no knickers and I am now feeling foolish for not starting with knickers!

Will try to teach her pulling up/down but she might work out that it is easier not to wear anything at all

Cooperoo · 25/08/2005 11:32

Hello
My friend out here has trained her son and started off with using shorts and no pants as her ds could get the shorts up and down more easily and they didn't hug him like a nappy. I am going to give this a go tomorrow putting some shorts on under a dress and see what happens. We had our first outing today to my friends and we took the potty. We had two wees and a poo in it despite the distractions of playing with her friend and managed two (very short) car journeys with no accidents. Phew! We did have a wee on the floor yesterday but she was very tired and so I think that is why.
Sooty - Hope you have had a better day today. Playing with the poo is one of my fears as dd will just go in her potty and not tell me about it half the time. So far she has just left it thankfully and I try to remember to keep checking.
Gemmamay - It is reassuring to know you are not the only one isn't it. I know we will all get there but the support along the way is nice isn't it. How is your dd doing today?

OP posts:
gemmamay · 25/08/2005 13:31

Well - I work 3 days a week so am also handing nursery potty training!

DD is at nursery 2 days and then at in-laws one day. Nursery have been sitting her on the potty and she did a wee there yesterday but she is in nappies at other times.

Lukcily I work Wed Thu Fri so I have 4 days to dedicate to her toilet habits this weekend so according to Gina Ford she should be sorted by day 4 and her return to nursery!

I am still encourgaing her when I get home to use the potty which she is - much to her delight (cheers and claps!)

I am hoping that she isn't confused but we'll find out this weekend!

sootyrupert · 25/08/2005 14:05

Yesterday dd went to the childminder and she came home in nappies!! There was too much going on apparently! Today we have had a breakthrough with two wees on the potty after pulling down pants - hooray!! She did a poo in her pants and weed in her pants when she was painting - far too exciting to leave to use the potty. I am very pleased though because this is huge progress. I am going to try and stick with knickers as I go back to work in two weeks and am hoping she will have got the idea. I am quite happy to have no more nappies and mop up accidents but I don't think the childminder is so keen, thats why I want to try and get her to use potty regularly whilst wearing knickers over the next two weeks! I'm keeping my fingers crossed. sing baggy shorts/ trousers for a few days definitely seemsto have helped. Good luck to you both, just think we'll probably find this so funny in a few months!!

sootyrupert · 25/08/2005 14:06

That should have said using baggy shorts/ trousers!

Cooperoo · 26/08/2005 11:43

Tried the baggy shorts and had an accident. . Still 100% with nothing on though . Will try again tomorrow when DH is here for moral support.
Hope you are getting on well today.

Knickers are going well so far!

SHe did take them off but after a bit of bribing (I won't read you the book until you put you knicjers back on) she is OK.

I think she might be holding on to wee as she's only done one all morning...maybe there will be a rush this afternoon and I'll have to be double quick with the potty and whipping down pants!

Have been invited to a BBQ on Monday - its people from work, do I go alone or take DD (and therefore potty) with me! Or not go at all - I can't imagine her going the whole time with out weeing and don't want a puddle to be left on someones carpet!

My mum has bought a travel potty but she isn't back from the US (where she's boughtit)till Wed so if I take the potty along we'll have to go with the big white and yellow one - this seasons must have accessory

muminlondon · 27/08/2005 19:56

I bought a travel potty in preparation but in 2 weeks haven't used it - have used a folding loo seat instead. it might be useful in the car as an emergency sick bowl though.

muminlondon · 27/08/2005 19:57

dd hasn't used it, that is - I've been trained for a long time now

Cooperoo · 28/08/2005 10:41

Lol mum in london. I don't think I will bother with the potty then, unless I see one very cheap second hand.
Gemmamay - Go for it with the potty if the friend has children of her own. I took dd out last week (our only outing - sigh) to a friends who had just trained her boy and so wasn't phased by possible accidents.
I am excited today as dd1 has had knickers on all morning and we have had three wees and a poo in the toilet and no accidents......so far. I am expecting some but feel we have had a real breakthough. DH took her for a walk too and made her sit on the loo before they left when she did a wee and then the walk was fine. He did take the potty with him though lol. I think I am far to worked up about it all but it can't be helped. .
