Ok, here goes.
Coca Cola are running a promo via their Dr Pepper brand just now on facebook. It is called 'status takeover' and involves the application putting an embarrassing or funny status on your FB page.
My 14 yo dd participated and I was HORRIFIED to log into FB and see that her status read - 'I watched 2 girls one cup and felt hungry afterwards'. For anyone who doesn't know what this means, please stay ignorant, for those who do, you can imagine how I felt. This was compounded later on when a quick search through dds internet history revealed she had tried to find out what it was for herself. Thankfully, our ISP has a wonderful child filter!!
So, after various emails and phonecalls to CocaCola marketing I have been offered (quite offensively) as way of compensation, a night in a hotel and theatre tickets for the West End. Fat lot of use to me, we live in Glasgow.
So, how do I proceed? ASA? I am absolutely fizzing with rage and disgust, and want a full apology and explanation. CocaCola are saying they use outside marketing teams for different brands and it's outside their jurisdiction. Help!?

ArseHolio · 16/07/2010 20:11

Just a thought but would ceop be interested do you think ?

POFAKKEDDthechair · 16/07/2010 20:12

I can see the screen grab as clear as day and it does say Dr Pepper straight after it. Awful.

OMG - I put it into google/facebook search - and found it on someone's FB - no idea who the person is - their FB is open.

Merrylegs · 16/07/2010 20:14

Yes - I wouldn't delete this thread - it is powerful as it is, puts your point across well and there is always the chance the meeja could link to it without identifying you - ie just your mumsnet persona. Someone will be reading......

Also your screen grab quite clearly states it is a Dr Pepper status update. Someone has royally screwed up.

tabouleh · 16/07/2010 20:15

Actually sorry that may be a page set up for this? Anyway there is a Dr Pepper icon thing after it.

ISNT · 16/07/2010 20:16

Well fuck me.

Just mindbogglingly awful.

Police, ceop, MN let girls be girls, press, MP, um,

MrsRickman · 16/07/2010 20:19

Thanks for the link Tabouleh, I've screengrabbed that also.
I'm going to contact the police in the morning, dd is staying with friends tonight and I want to have a chat with her first about it all.
Thanks again for all the support, I'll leave the thread for the time being.

By fobbing you off, they are probably playing it down and waiting for advice from their lawyers before getting back to you properly.

CreepyFunbags · 16/07/2010 20:31

I can't believe it, how awful! Yes, call the police tomorrow. Disgusting for them to put that on anyone's page, never mind that of a teenager.

dinamum · 16/07/2010 20:34

article on cocacola scam

luciemule · 16/07/2010 20:35

Aha - there's a MacDonald's one going around identical to that dinamum.

Checkmate · 16/07/2010 20:41

Abysmal.... Another recommendation to speak to the police.

The Brandrepublic.com articles mentioned by a couple of posters have BOTH been pulled from the website - looks like bad news travels fast.

HalfTermHero · 16/07/2010 20:46

Good on you, OP. Going to the police is the best course of action in this situation. You must be feeling very upset/enraged tonight. I hope you can begin to feel better once you know that the police are investigating. I would imagine that the competition will be suspended immediately and so no further children will be exposed.

bibbitybobbityhat · 16/07/2010 21:01

There's enough information on this thread for any of us to go to ceop, I would have thought.

Onky · 16/07/2010 21:03

Someone get a screen grab of the ad. Email onebat of the campaigns team and get her to take it up, she's very knowledgeable about social media.

ThingOne · 16/07/2010 21:06

I was a juror in an obscenity trial about fifteen years ago. We were told that something was obscene if it was "likely to deprave or corrupt (the majority of?) those likely to see it."

I would have thought this is definitely a police matter. Your daughter googled a phrase she would otherwise never have heard. She will no doubt try again and will find out.

RuthieCohen · 16/07/2010 21:12

I wouldn't be surprised if Cocacola were so keen for Dr Pepper to be seen as a young, subversive brand that they were hoping for an outcry from the likes of us.
