Ok, here goes.
Coca Cola are running a promo via their Dr Pepper brand just now on facebook. It is called 'status takeover' and involves the application putting an embarrassing or funny status on your FB page.
My 14 yo dd participated and I was HORRIFIED to log into FB and see that her status read - 'I watched 2 girls one cup and felt hungry afterwards'. For anyone who doesn't know what this means, please stay ignorant, for those who do, you can imagine how I felt. This was compounded later on when a quick search through dds internet history revealed she had tried to find out what it was for herself. Thankfully, our ISP has a wonderful child filter!!
So, after various emails and phonecalls to CocaCola marketing I have been offered (quite offensively) as way of compensation, a night in a hotel and theatre tickets for the West End. Fat lot of use to me, we live in Glasgow.
So, how do I proceed? ASA? I am absolutely fizzing with rage and disgust, and want a full apology and explanation. CocaCola are saying they use outside marketing teams for different brands and it's outside their jurisdiction. Help!?

Thanks Fellatio I will try and see but I think you need Skyplayer for Sky - and unfortunately our broadband is not great here....

Just a very quick idea of what was said would be fine....

haha, I was going to ask if it was Jimbo as well! I quite miss him, in a strange kind of way. He could have been an interesting addition to MN.....

"...just plain bad parenting to leave such a vulnerable child alone with the internet..."

You have spectacularly missed the point.

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 19/07/2010 19:10

can someone link to the Guardian article please?

FellatioNelson · 19/07/2010 19:11

No you haven't missed it yet. They trailed it just before the last ad break. It must be coming any minute.

MrsJT · 19/07/2010 19:12

Lee - suggest you read the thread before commenting - the OP's dd was not left alone with the internet and the OP was extremely responsible as a parent IMHO.

RedArsedBaboon · 19/07/2010 19:12

without reading the whole thread, can you tell me Did coca cola give her the line to put on her facebook status? How did it come to be on there.

Just a bit confused.

NetworkGuy · 19/07/2010 19:14

StrawberrySam - sorry, meant to respond earlier. Yes, have sent that e-mail to both Sky News, Channel 4 news, and a couple of other contacts to see (since no major outlet had reported it very well) if influence could be brought to bear...

Have seen it being reported in Malaysia and elsewhere. Unfortunately the "Big Society" seems to be centre of attention for some news outlets.

Just saw Sky mention the news at 7 and included a screen shot while noting a complaint about a "porn movie"

Interested to see that there were challenges to the piece on socialtimes.com - some really good comments worth reading - see the link posted by MyNeighbourTotoro around 16:45

FellatioNelson · 19/07/2010 19:15

Bugger off, Lee. You are obviously one of those people who is quite young and irresponsible (and therefore easily titillated by internet trash and sensationalist guff), who has commented with insulting comments about MrsRickman on many of the websites this story has appeared on today, and you have tracked the story here just to continue your stupid bile-venting. Grow up.

KarmaAngel · 19/07/2010 19:16

Hasn't been on sky news yet, on after the break.

CrosswordGeekWantsChange · 19/07/2010 19:16

Bloody missed it whilst doing washing up.
:@

strandedatsea · 19/07/2010 19:17

redarsed (as everyone else is probably watching Sky news and/or making supper I will reply as we are 5 hours behind...)

The campaign meant that the ad agency representing Coca Cola/Dr Pepper was able to change Mrs Rickman's daughter's FB status to whatever they wanted. She had agreed they could do that - what, of course, she hadn't agreed to was that they were going to put a reference to a very nasty, hard core porn film on her status.....

KarmaAngel · 19/07/2010 19:17

Have been lurking on this thread since this morning. Mrs Rickman just wanted to offer my support too. Have reported the other facebook page. Have just shown this thread to DH he is to say the least. It's very scary that this is so unregulated.

FellatioNelson · 19/07/2010 19:18

OK, it's coming up after this ad break - finally! They are showing a FB page with youngsters profile pictures on it hope it's not MrsR's daughter.

ISNT · 19/07/2010 19:18

bibbity yes that is true and I'm no fan myself

But it has a huge circulation and this is the sort of story that they'd love, I have my own idea of who I'd send it to but a lefty columnist in the Independent isn't going to raise as much of a furore as one of the wider read and more hysterical publications.

So far we have had a piece in the guardian business section saying sod all and that (for the mainstream) has been that.

interested to see what is said on sky...

NetworkGuy · 19/07/2010 19:20

RAB - participants in the Dr Pepper competition/promotion used an application when they were on Facebook to put some message at random as their status message.

They could only control the level of embarrassment (three levels, with higher points awarded for higher embarrassment). Points were to make them eligible for a 1000 pound prizem drawn each Tuesday for 10 weeks, due to end 27-07

Dr Pepper piece now on Sky News 19:19

MrsJT · 19/07/2010 19:20

Its on sky news now

BitOfFun · 19/07/2010 19:20

Here it is...

CrosswordGeekWantsChange · 19/07/2010 19:20

Yay, here's Justine!

xstitch · 19/07/2010 19:22

mrs rickman had child filters on which prevented her daughter from actually accessing these sites. She also checked her daughter's internet history. Soul#nds like responsible parenting to me. Is lee one of the 'creatives' behind the campaign trying desperately to punt some of the blame?
