God yes Exeter traffic is awful. I went to school in Exeter btw essbee so know a bit about areas if you want any tips.

I hear there's a very good childminder in Ivybridge

Hi Goosey, 'when' is the great question. We are getting closer to our goal, though. Dh has almost gained the most important parts of the necessary pest controller qualifications and is clocking up the experience he needs to make the move to another job.

Other parts of the jigsaw are slowly falling into place, too. Dh's parents have just sold their main home and have moved back to their other property in Kingsbridge. They are now getting it renovated, so we can't visit them this summer. When it is finished, there will be a large flat for them, and two smaller flats. One they will rent out, the other they will keep free for guests and us to stay in.

Dh is talking about us moving in a year's time, once he has a job. He will probably go down first and I will stay in London. This time round, it is more likely dh not I will be the main breadwinner, as it's likely he will get a job in Devon more easily than me - not that I won't be looking for one. I will start looking for a job once Dh has his.

When we both move down, hopefully we can stay in one of the inlaws' flats for a while, till we find our feet and sell our house in London. That's the plan, anyway. That's assuming we will be able to afford to buy somewhere and have sufficient wages to pay the mortgage.

Tbh, I feel very powerless about the above. I am happy for it to happen whenever it does, but as it really is between dh and his parents, I can't force the issue. I feel a bit wierd about this tbh as I am used to having more control over our futures. Both sons are happy at their schools in London and dh and I are happy with our jobs, so there is no deadline to move away.

If you happen to hear of any company needing pest control officers, do let me know asap.

I went to uni in Exeter and loved it. Would have liked to settle there myself but split with H2B of the time, so moved back to parents for a bit.

Heavitree is by St Lukes (teacher training bit of the uni) isn't it? That's where I was for first year down there.

Oh all the memories are coming flooding back!

Somanykiddies · 18/08/2005 17:47

Essbee, sorry didn't get back earlier, been packing, ha ha! We are off to Seaton, just along the cost from Lyme Regis and not too far from Exeter either!

pinkmamma · 19/08/2005 09:39

Hi Essbee, just wondering how things going with you?
I find sometimes I wake up in the night and think I am mad for wanting to make the move - but I always feel better about it in the morning.

Fear of the unknown can stop people doing so many things, but I don't want to look back and think "oh i wish i had...". There is a book called "feel the fear and do it anyway"!!

I can't wait to get down there and start house hunting - only 2 and a half weeks to go

I've got to say its a nightmare having house on the market. ~Ours has been on since last November, it was "sold" until the guy pulled out a week before completion date in April (he wanted another 20k off asking price, even though he had already had 30k off - told him where to stick it ).

Had a viewing yesterday morning and it takes hours to get the house looking absolutely perfect, they were here for a good half hour but i don't hold much hope. DS just did a power ranger impression the whole time they were here, when they spoke to him he growled at them. (he has only just turned 3!!).

I would have thought you would have a much better bet of selling quickly in Surrey though. Good luck with it!

Springchicken · 23/08/2005 09:28

Only just seen this Essbee but good luck in whatever you do. Hope everything goes OK today.

I had our house valued yesterday and it is an absolute nightmare, not to mention we've made very little money on it and had we have sold 7 months ago we would've made at least £15K

Anyway, good luck on house hunting and getting yours on the market. Glad ex-dh seems to be being co-operative

I wish you well essbee, I wondered why you were flogging off your chattels! Devon is a lovely place. My best friend's DH comes from Budleigh Salterton (I know, I know, a tenuous link...). Their children have spent many happy times with grandparents on the beach. I have happy memories of holidays there. It is good to be so close to the sea.
