Can we move to London.

I hate were we are living now with a passion, I am so miserable that it is starting to affect my relationship with dp.

WE live in Lancashire and have been looking at Yorkshire, but I just can't find anywhere that I like and the reason is that I want to go back to London. I have finally ground dp down and he is willing to look at London - but now is the hard bit - finance!

I don't see how we can do it, our present house is worth about £145,000, our mortgage is about £100,000. Our household income is about £40-45K.

I have enquired about shared ownership and key worker schemes as I am teacher so should be eligble but of course I couldn't get a teaching job in London without somewhere to live, and I am not eligible for any of the schemes without a job.

Am I going to be stuck living in a place I hate forever ?

Is there a way out? Is there a way for us to buy in London?

Deffo don't move to suburbia! It's soul-destroying

I'm like you, TSaP, would rather be stuck in the middle of a field than 'sort-of-near' the country and 'sort-of-near' the city, as you are in suburbia.

TwinSetAndPearls · 24/07/2005 16:59

thanks for that snafu was beginning to think I was bonkers for that train of thought!

snafu · 24/07/2005 17:00

Croydon - the ultimate in suburban hellholes. I really hate it, but I am stuck here for the moment...

TwinSetAndPearls · 24/07/2005 17:02

lol, couldn't even afford the luxury of being unhappy in croydon!

Lucky escape, I'd say

TwinSetAndPearls · 24/07/2005 17:08

right I am going to move... I am going to move.

am now scouring the country for a house we can afford in somewhere i would live.

ts&p - you say you keep moving but are still not happy with dp - why do you think London would solve things between you?

noddyholder · 24/07/2005 17:25

you could get something like that in brighton for about 190-215,000

TwinSetAndPearls · 24/07/2005 17:29

Sorry, mustn't have made myself clear, I love dp to bits he is the best thing that has ever happened to me and dd.

The problem is where we live, it is causing problems because I am not happy and I can see how it is pissing dp off as he works hard to provide for us and I am still miserable.

It has become more noticeable since we have managed to have more time on our own as there is nothing for us to do. The theatre here rarely offers anything other than Budd Holly or Fame the musical, there are only two restuarants worth eating in, the town centre is full of pound shops, I miss my friends, the library is crap, the art gallery has three pictures ... I could go on.

Dp and I would be a sickeningly perfect couple if we could find somewhere to live that would make us both happy.

Move then!your relationship needs more than a couple of pound shops and buddy holly

TwinSetAndPearls · 24/07/2005 17:32

Basically I am a leftie, , pretentious, luvvie, Guardian reading Boden wearing, bookish, snooty madam who doesn't really fit into a town like Blackpool.

OP posts:
noddyholder · 24/07/2005 17:34

Couldn't agree more TSAP we went to Blackpool for a holiday thinking it would be ironic and retro and it nearly drove us mad We came home after 3 days!Come to Brighton we are all pretentious snooty book heads with hand crocheted sandals and vegetarian pets

TwinSetAndPearls · 24/07/2005 17:37

I would love to but don't think we can go to £190-£210K without a london wage.

OP posts:
noddyholder · 24/07/2005 17:38

what is your max?

Enid · 24/07/2005 17:38

sorry ts&p didnt get the full picture

sounds like you need London

TwinSetAndPearls · 24/07/2005 17:42

not a problem enid

OP posts:
TwinSetAndPearls · 24/07/2005 17:44

If we were to stay on exactly the same income as now I would say £175K max.

OP posts:
TwinSetAndPearls · 24/07/2005 17:44

Dp has just laughed muttered something about fur coat and no knickers and to reduce the amount below by £10K

WideWebWitch · 24/07/2005 18:49

TS&P have you seen this book commuterland? I've got a very old copy of it, quite useful.

WideWebWitch · 24/07/2005 18:53

What about Bristol TS&P, lots of people fitting your description! And some decent schools (at primary anyway) and def a city, thriving arts centres/theatres (plural), cinemas, houses are quite expensive though.

TwinSetAndPearls · 24/07/2005 19:48

Dp has been offered a few jobs in Bristol, have family in Bristol so know housing is expensive but plenty of areas from which to commute in which we could afford to buy a house a similar size to what we have now.

It is on the new revised list!

CountessDracula · 24/07/2005 20:23

I think brighton sounds like a good bet, they do call it London by the sea!

CountessDracula · 24/07/2005 20:29

how about something like this?

TwinSetAndPearls · 24/07/2005 20:39

bristol is more affordable than brighton, and I do have famiy there. Would probably prefer brighton but bristol may be more practical in terms of finances as dp wouldn't need to do a long commute.
