Well, what did you all think?

I think it is up to the usual standard but hasn't Harry become really angry? I got a bit depressed at the constant blows Harry had to suffer and I didn't predict the death accurately.

Ok tallulah, what about Dawn French as Umbridge - or is she too comic for the role?

tallulah · 30/06/2003 16:57

She could be evil.... ! Yep, she'd be OK!

pie · 30/06/2003 17:14

After reading about Umbridge's cats and fluffy stuff I was thinking Patricia Routledge, the one who plays Hyacinth Bucket in Keeping Up Appearances.

Kathy Burke was my thought for Umbridge. Or how abot Pauline Quirk?

lilibet · 30/06/2003 20:21

I think Kathy Burke is spot on. David Thewlis has been cast as Lupin. Very wrong!!

Lou!
I think David Thewlis' staring eyes make him quite a reasonable Lupin casting, but he does usually play sociopaths, which makes him wrong I guess.
Kathy Burke or Pauline Quirke would be both be physically right for Umbridge but aren't they too young? I wondered whether Miriam Margolyes doing sinister as opposed to twinkly might work...
I LOVE casting books I have read and enjoyed, or taking issue with film castings of book adaptations. I think the Harry Potter films have been pretty well cast on the whole and it so nice to see most of the roles going to British or Irish actors.

pie · 01/07/2003 16:01

Miriam Margolyes would be good except she is already Professor Sprout

prufrock · 01/07/2003 16:46

So you wouldn't say that a werewolf was even slightly a sociopathic kind of a guy Marina?

Definately Patricia Routledge for Umbridge. And I thought Richard Briers for Cornelius Fudge

EmmaTMG · 01/07/2003 20:10

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Phew...finished it today and I actually thought it was quite an anti-climax, from Sirius being killed off to the whole prophecy thing.
I didn't think Sirius was a very 'main character' and I had already worked out that Harry and Voldemort were linked and so had to kill one another to live on before this book.
I'm actually quite disappointed and I'm surprised to hear myself say that as I've loved the other books, I thought book 4 was loads better than this one. Maybe I've missed something in this one....there was enough of it after all!

Marina · 02/07/2003 10:14

But he's a good guy in the wider scheme, Prufrock - the boy just can't help it. But, the memories of him in Mike Leigh's Naked (NICE film, very uplifting) do get in the way of him being taken seriously as someone with Harry's best interests at heart.
Pie, guess who hasn't seen the second film yet
Has to be P Routledge, then, I think.

lilibet · 02/07/2003 12:14

No!!! Kathy Burke, remember her as Mary Tudor in Elizabeth? She was so good.

lou33 · 02/07/2003 15:16

If Mo won't do it then it has to be Kathy Burke.

lilibet · 02/07/2003 15:56

We should write to warner bros and offer ourselves as casting team for the fututre films

pie · 09/07/2003 21:17

Just noticed on imdb that both Dawn French and Pam Ferris are in the next Harry Potter movie, and neither in the roles suggested here, they are playing The Fat Lady and Aunt Marge respectively.

Also Ewan Mcgregor was down for Lupin before it went to Thewlis, anybody think this would have been a better choice?

Yes and no - Ewan McG is too young I think. I'd imagined Lupin to be a cross between him and Kenneth Brannagh actually!

How about Prunella Scales for Umbridge?

I dont know, KS but I bet we find out at the end of Book 7! I think the odd "left overs" etc are setting things up for the finale. And copy all you like - I did

SoupDragon · 10/07/2003 19:38

Like the idea of Prunella as Umbridge BTW

Also just finished. I'd been dying to read this thread and find out others' thoughts.
Was anyone else expecting Percy to get his come uppance? I was expecting him to appear at the end at the Ministry and see the error of his ways.
Also, Neville's blocked speech during the fight after he got bopped on the nose really got on my nerves as it destroyed the tension for me.
For some reason, I had guessed it was Sirius but I didn't find his death as upsetting as I thought I would.
I hope JK's writing away furiously for the next installment - she doens't need to make it so long though!

judetheobscure · 14/07/2003 11:09

Agree, next two books should be shorter. In fact, no.6 should be more like nos. 1-3 in length, with no.7 perhaps a bit longer but not as long as nos.4&5.
