Well, what did you all think?

I think it is up to the usual standard but hasn't Harry become really angry? I got a bit depressed at the constant blows Harry had to suffer and I didn't predict the death accurately.

OP posts:

Lou33, did you just post to tell us you couldn't be arsed posting!

nerdgirl · 23/06/2003 22:50

Sorry Lou33. I just read that again and it looked a bit dismissive but it's just that your post tickled my funny bone. It's a genuine smiley. I just have a strange sense of humour.

lou33 · 23/06/2003 22:57

Yes!

I was in the middle of a long post and got cut off, then the thought of redoing it was too much!

How does the prophecy tell him how to destroy Harry?

And why has she painted his father as being such a s**t? I thought that there would be a follow on from that, such as, it was Snape's version of things rather than what actually happened.

The prophesy doesn't tell Voldemort how to kill Harry only that he has to kill Harry or be killed by him.

But voldemort doesn't know that. He only knows the beginning of the prophesy - that a boy would be born to parents who had defied him three times and that this boy would have the power to destroy him.

I actually liked the tarnishing of the image of James Potter. We had four books in which Harry viewed him as a hero. I guess there is a time in everyones life when they realise that their parents are not perfect. It doesn't take away from him. Just makes him more real. We can all be assholes - especially at 15.

motherinferior · 24/06/2003 08:30

Agree about the tarnishing.

Actually, one thing does get very much on my nerves - the depiction of Mrs Weasley. She's always fussing, cooking, being a stereotypical mum who only uses her considerable witchcraft skills to be domestic and/or worrying 'too much' about Harry et al. So she's neither a particularly positive SAHM or a working witch (all her kids are grown up or at school, dammit)!

I like Tonks - v different sort of grown-up woman. But why are all the splendid 'career women', like Tonks or McGonnagall, childless?

Literally just finished it

The third person who could see the Thestrals in class was "a stringy slitherin boy". Luna isn't in Harry's class, she saw them in the coaches on the way into school. I don't think Harry actually saw* his parents die either, although he was there.

  • I wonder if some of the "abandoned" plot lines will crop up in the next books.

  • I think Harry just forgot about Sirius' mirror. (maybe JK Rowling forgot about it too). It crops up at the end to reinforce the guilt Harry was feeling as it would have made all his efforts to contact Sirius much easier and therefore Kreacher wouldn't have been able to lie about wher sirius was.

  • very disappointed that Sirius was killed off. Sob!

Marina, I understand why Dumbledore sent Petunia the howler. I just don't get the message "Remember my last, Petunia". Any ideas?

SoupDragon · 24/06/2003 15:02

I think he means his last letter, the one he left with Harry on her doorstep explaining about the importance of Harry having a home. (P737)

After fourteen years, isn't it a bit cryptic?Especially as she wouldn't recognise the voice.

SoupDragon · 24/06/2003 15:11

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

I thought that Howlers used the sender's voice but that wouldn't explain why Harry didn't recognise it. I assume that no one else would be sending Petunia a Howler, especially given the circumstances.

nerdgirl · 24/06/2003 15:13

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

It was definitely Dumbledore's howler but how was Petunia supposed to know, if he's only communicated with her once and in writing fourteen years previously.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I can't believe I'm debating things like this It's supposedly a children's book! LOL.

Personally, I assume that the reasons for Harry being there are probably always on Petunia's mind - especially as Vernon is always so intent on hating/getting shot of him. I'm guessoing that Vernon knows nothing of why Harry is there and so Petunia has had no one to talk about it with & it's therefore always been running about in her mind. I do't know...

nerdgirl · 24/06/2003 15:27

It's an excellent childrens book though, Soupy!

What is a 'childrens book' anyway but one with no sex and no swear words? It can still have wonderful characters and an involving plot.

And in defense of Molly Weasley, I'd love to have her as a mother. She raised six great kids and Percy!

SoupDragon · 24/06/2003 15:33

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

They do, of course, sell HP with adult covers on. Nice tasteful black and white ones I think.

I like Molly Weasley too. Maybe if I had a few spells to help me with the household chores I'd be as good at mothering as she is...

bea · 24/06/2003 20:36

going back to the threstrals thing... i don;t think it counts that harry saw his parents die as he was only a baby... but he DID see cedric pop his clogs! thus the reason he can see the threstrals now...

feeling very very tired as stayed up 2 nights on the run to finish the blasted thing! dh is prob all excited now as he'll think that if i;m not reading he'll be able to get a wiggle!!!!

Nooooo! I amused myself trying to think who culd play Sirius. Gary Oldman's just not right for me I didn't come up with a "right" person mind you.

lilibet · 24/06/2003 21:53

You are such a show off! and I am sooooo jealous!!

Who then? I alwys try and cast the characters, Jo Brand for Umbridge?

SoupDragon · 24/06/2003 21:56

I couldn't come up with a suitable candidate but, then again, I don't think I was imagining him correctly as JK R describes him as looking wasted.

Jo Brand or maybe... I can't remember her real name! Waynetta...

lilibet · 24/06/2003 22:00

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Kathy Burke! Yes!! I have no ideas on who should play either Lupin or Mad Eye tho'. Michael Gambon has taken over from Richard Harris
