One of my close girlfriends got married yesterday. It was a really, really lovely day - and, while it must have cost quite a bit, just goes to show that you don't have to remortgage your home to have a marvellous, memory filled day. She arrived by decorated rikshaw (spelling?) ridden by her father - artistic friends provided photography services, music in the church and a band for the night. The groom's sister's friends provided waiter service. Other friends did the flowers, decorated the hall or brought a variety of salads and puddings to help the hogroast go further. Basically, everyone who could help was happy to do so. Meanwhile, they shelled out on a large quantity of alcohol - which didn't run out - and a magician, bouncy castle and a couple of nannies so that the kids could all have a whale of a time... and parents could enjoy themselves too.

Maybe because it was such a communal affair, everyone felt really part of the proceedings and I can honestly say that it was one of the nicest weddings I have been to, despite the fact that the sun didn't shine.

So congratulations J & S - I wish you love, luck and happiness in your life together.

munz · 26/06/2005 17:50

yep, the only thing that was missing was a marque and a string band in the castle grounds, but the day was fab, and I think that would have been too much iycwim, not to mention dad was paying!

we're still together, after 2 years, althou we've been together 6 and spent six months of our marriage apart (so does that still count! )

novadandypowder · 26/06/2005 20:49

wedding was about £50K, honeymoon was about £50K.

for the wedding we hired an edwardian mansion in scotland for the weekend, had approx. 90 people for the whole day. The most perfect day of my life.

the honeymoon was a month split between hawaii, maui, san francisco and new york. Slightly over ambitious and we were very glad to get home in the end.

katierocket · 26/06/2005 20:51

that's a joke right!

katierocket · 26/06/2005 20:52

sorry not ! but ?

expatinscotland · 26/06/2005 20:56

My sister got married 13 years ago with almost 450 guests present! Full meal, full open bar, band, the works. She had this silk dress, 8 attendants, married in this big ol' cathedral. Cost my dad about £18,000 and the US is far cheaper than the UK for most things.

She's still married to the guy, tho, and has two lovely daughters. But after seeing what she went through to plan that shindig (they were engaged for a year), I swore I'd never go down that route.

vickiyumyum · 26/06/2005 20:57

i think that ours was a bargain £3000, we are still togethe 8 years later, whereas my friend whos parents spent about £60,000, they were only married for just over a year

Cam · 26/06/2005 21:00

novadandypowder, are you Madonna?

novadandypowder · 26/06/2005 21:50

hahahah no i'm not madonna! Just lucky enough to have a DH who could afford it. We had our first anniversary in June and are expecting our first baby in November. It was honestly worth every penny, and we were very happy with everything. The biggest expense was the venue - we had the wedding party there for the whole weekend/ marquee/ bar/ and food. We also paid for coaches to ferry in our guests from edinburgh.

As for the honeymoon - my DH is a snob and will only stay in the Four Seasons, but i'm not complaining as it was wonderful

expatkat · 26/06/2005 22:55

LMAO (delayed reaction) at expatinscotland.

expatkat · 26/06/2005 22:56

Your first post (eloping: priceless)

expatinscotland · 26/06/2005 23:56

Aye, nova. We get it. You're not Madonna, you're JK Rowling

CarlyP · 27/06/2005 11:49

Ours cost £30k. got married at ashdown park in east sussex and honeymooned in caribbean.

cashmeresox · 27/06/2005 11:54

We spent about £3.5 grand on ours (very reluctantly I have to say!) as we love all our folks and didn't want to hurt their feelings and just run away like as we wanted to . My dad spent £1000 on my dress - beautiful lacy number and another £1000 towards a fab honeymoon in Sri Lanka. The rest we spent was on gorgeous lunch for 20 at our favourite very isolated pub in the mountains and then an evening knees up in the village hall for just about everyone living within a 10 mile radius. It was all very rural and lots of our guests got lost trying to find us - it was Christmas and snowing. The best bit was being able to give everyone who made it to the church lots of lovely vintage port and mince pies - everyone still talks about it!! (well, those that can remember !! A friend lent us a car - a nice big BMW, though we didn't know what it would be before it turned up Very sadly, my dad was too poorly to come to the wedding and much of it was planned for his benefit and we worked like dogs till 1 in the morning of our big day sorting everything out!! My friend walked my dog for me and sadly my horse wasn't very well so I couldn't have him smartened up and ride to church but it snowed and my lovely dh drove us home at the end of the night. It wasn't the best or most romantic day of our lives but really glad we did it anyway and it was the start of a real adventure. (I would never do it again!!!

Elf1981 · 27/06/2005 12:45

A little over £17k but not all out of my own pocket.
We had:

Sit down meal for nearly 100 people at country manor not far from where we live (both me and DH are from large families)
4 alcoholic drinks per person (though somehow I never got to finish any of mine!)
Evening catering for 200 people
The Wedding dress at over £1000
Bridesmaid dresses made for 8 bridesmaids, then buying their shoes etc
Suits for DH, my dad, two users, best man, DH's dad and stepdad.
Fantastic wedding car, old white 1910 style Tourer called Pearl Princess (loved it!)
Coach hire for the guests
Flowers / gifts / favours / decorations etc
Honeymoon in Tenerife
Photography - my only regret as went with a large company and they kind of annoyed me!

All in all, had a fantastic day. My parents and in-laws were thrilled, and everybody played a part. It was 15 months ago now, we're expecting our first baby in October, and we couldn't be happier!

clary · 27/06/2005 15:11

goodness me at some of the prices! (both the high and the low)
Ours cost about £6k including a £2k honeymoon (my most expensive holiday ever but lovely).
My sister made my beuatiful dress and the most expensive thing was the sit down hotel meal for 90 people which my mum paid for and it was just perfcet. well worth the money i think.
