After lots of umming and ahhing this week I have finally made a desicion.

I am going to go back to college and do the access course. Will give it my best shot and hopefully scrape through with enough marks to get into uni.

We still have big money probs at the mo but the biggest of these will be paid off by next march, and I am going to start budgeting properly.

I am still gonna keep an eye out for any jobs that i think could fit in or indeed a better job for dp. My friend is a weekend manager at BHS so i'm hoping prehaps I can apply for sundays there.

Thanks for all the advice, I know I moan on alot about this and i'm surprised you didn't all tell me to bugger off before now.

Don't worry, i'll be back moaning as soon as i'm stuck on an assignment

We also went to the were in the same year at the same secondary school! Only discovered by chance on here last year- how spooky!

so are you applying to uce? hve you thought about birmingham uni for adult nursing also?

sorry nutty- hijacking your thread!

tiredemma · 19/06/2005 20:55

sorry that sounds gobbldigook, we were in the same year at the same secondary school- put my teeth back in.

HappyHuggy · 19/06/2005 21:11

ive only really thought of UCE cause its near to where i live, although im going to look into Birmingham and coventry uni's too. Will probably apply for them all anyway to increase my chances!

Ive just finished my first year too!

how did you find it?

moondog · 19/06/2005 21:15

Good for you,nutty!
Met someone I used to work with yesterday who I haven't seen for ages. She has been doing the same (going nowhere) job for 20 odd years and has hated it for the last 7.Anyway,she did the access course and told me that,at the age of 47,she has just been accepted to start a nursing degree. She's knackered, but the huge grin on her face said it all!!!

fairydust · 19/06/2005 21:48

all i can say is about bloody time woman - really pleased for you and hope it all works out

p.s i'll stop sending you links

jjash · 19/06/2005 21:56

anyone mind if i butt in and ask if any of you doing the access courses or nursing ones are in your thirties yet ? I have worked in care sector for 6 years before taking break to raise my two kids but am umming and aahing over going back to college to train as a nurse.I am 32 [eek] and thought of going back to study now is scaring me

nutcracker · 20/06/2005 11:00

JJash - I am 27 but I do have a friend who is 37 who has just finnished the access course and starts at uni doing midwifery in september, so it can be done.

Anyway 33 is not old

OP posts:
nutcracker · 20/06/2005 11:01

Oh and Fairydust, I can still look

OP posts:
snafu · 20/06/2005 11:07

jjash, I'm 32 next month [shock} and am starting midwifery this sept - it's never too late...

HappyHuggy · 20/06/2005 11:14

im 22 but alot of people in my course are in their 30's and mainly 40's

nailpolish · 20/06/2005 11:39

hi nutty

glad you are being so positive. the course will fly by and before you know it you will be starting your training! does the access course guarantee you a place at uni? i know they used to but not sure if that still happens.

anyway, good luck and look forward to hearing from you how things are going.

ps march is not far away at all, money probs will be sorted in no time

hugs, np xxx

SoupDragon · 20/06/2005 11:45

Woohooo!! So pleased you've come to a decision, Nnutty. Good luck!!

coppertop · 20/06/2005 11:47

Hurray for Nutty! Good luck with the course. xx

NomDePlume · 20/06/2005 11:49

nutty, this is great. I really, really hope it works out and you can stick to it. I'm starting my access course in Sept (full time, although still only 14 college based hours a week), I know it'll be a challenge with 3 kids, a DH who works long and pretty unflexible hours and a college 30-40 mins away, but i tell myself it'll all be worth it in the end.

nutcracker · 20/06/2005 11:51

Thanks again

Nailpolish - The access course garuntees you 19 credits so loing as you pass it all, and you can get extra credits too. It doesn't garuntee you a place at uni though and my friend got turned down for midwifery, and is now going to do childrens nursing instead.

I am not too worried as it is very rare that an applicant for nursing gets turned down with an access certificate.

Thats great NDP, and full time too. I would have liked to got it over and one with in a year but don't wanna spread myself to thinly.

Plus it gives me 2 years to learn how to drive.

ninah · 20/06/2005 11:55

Well done! good luck
