What do you read to your baby?

DS is almost 4 months and gets very excited when I read to him. I've got a couple of books with really nice simple, catchy stories and big bold pictures which are great.
I'd like to get some more as it gets dull reading hte same thing every day. Can anyone recommend something their baby has enjoyed. I don't live in the Uk so looking for suggestions to order from Amazon (or get one of my lovely family or friend in UK to send me as presents )

The good old hungary caterpiller (SP?) gets my vote, I now know it off by heart, and it will always calm dd down, no matter where we are, especially if stuck out in traffic, she's 19mths now!

I was given a lovely book as a gift for my dd. Its called Ten Wriggly Wiggly Caterpillars by Debbie Tarbett. Published by Little Tiger Press.

The caterpillars are 3D and has a pop up page at the end. It is a rhyming story and counts from ten down. My ds loves it.

Amazing Baby make some good books. Ds loves the epic Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (complete with shiny stars!)

And THIS little baby is the one I love best!

I try to do all the 'voices' - she really enjoys that.

'Is Your Mama a Llama?' is another fav of hers.

Oh well you know how nice it is then Leogaela.

My dd also likes the Usborne Easy Words to Read. I bought them to help my ds to learn to read (which he is managing a little bit).

They are phonics books. Some titles are Fat Cat on a Mat and Big Pig on a Dig. I think she likes them because they are simple and have nice pictures. All the characters are animals too so that probably helps.

I hope you get some nice books. I am really bad for buying books, my kids have loads!

I vote for catepillar too -although when it gets to the last page when 10 beautiful butterflies are to pop out - mine look like a car crash! ds has ripped most of them out!
In later months you may find some of the little books made of really thick card - but are only 3 inches square - a lot easier for your ds to carry around and bring to you. I think I picked them up in Matalan for £1 each.

Brown Bear, is another good one, also Eric Carle, dd also liked the twinkle, twinkle book too again very fond of That's not my Teddy, an Usborne book, although growing out of now....

4 months: almost anything - look for clear pictures and / or rhythmic text. Board books can be handled.

I like the Amazing Baby books - Who goes sqeak, squeak is a fav: DS1 (2.5 yrs) "reads" it to DS2 (5.5mo). All the ones we've seen have been good. Some on Red House website for discounted prices.

also the "That's not my ..." (touchy feely)

poetry(!) nursery rhymes.

dd (9 months) loves Dr Seuss, especially "Fox in Socks" - obviously enjoying the sounds of the words rather than the stories as such.

When he was tiny ds loved Baby Boo by Amazing Baby. It has black and white pics of lots of lovely baby faces and a mirror at the back. Usborne Touchy Feely 'Puppies' was another favourite with lots of fluffy dogs and other textures to feel.

When he was drifting off to sleep I would read pretty much anything to him as the sound of my voice seemed to soothe him. He has heard most of the OU level 2 Geology course and several Dean Koontz novels!

His favourite bedtime book is Kiss Goodnight Sam (can't remember the author off the top of my head). He brings me books to read several times during the day and particularly likes stories that rhyme and which have animals in them such as The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo's Child. Oh and for a really good classic, The Jumblies by Edward Lear which has a nice rhythm (sp?) and has been illustrated by several good artists.

I could go on forever .

My actual fav read to DD2 and the DTs by default is The Kiss That Missed. Wonderful!
