do you go if you can go anywhere?

It'll be next year but time goes by so quickly we're already thinking, but don't know where to go...

UK- either the cotswolds or cornwall.

Europe- would LOVE to go back and live in majorca.

Worldwide- Australia of course.

can see us doing the UK choice until kids leave school (eons away), then going to majorca to live.

Australia is always an option once i have qualified as a nurse, id love to do it but if im honest, i dont think id have the guts to go there and start a new life.

mogwai I lived in maidenhead next to the Thames with a creek running under our house from 3 to 9 years i still dream about it now..

i am very romantic /fantasy character so this new home is going to fulfill that dream..there has to be some water somewhere..a view..

strustu you have the picture but \i think we will have to compromise in that

Cotswolds is definitely nice but too expensive and too up market for us we wouldn't fit in..no way

Where in mallorca? I hadn't really considered that and how easy is it to work for yourself?

One of my best memories is rambling in the derby peaks and YH but where is the water?

I sooo want this to work out right, i know you can send us the right way..

Lemonice, if you like the Peak District (think that's what Derby reference is about?) then you will be as far from the sea as you can get in this country. But great scenery, you can really breathe the air and there are several lakes ? have a look at Ladybower reservoir (where they filmed the Dambusters). However, houses are NOT cheap. It's a National Park so strict limits on how many houses can be built.

tiredemma · 12/06/2005 20:34

we met up with a family friend incidently last night who upped sticks, brought a bb in french pyrenees and now run activity holidays throughout the year. First year has been hard work but have worked out now how to make it easier for themselves next year. Best thing that they ever done- the set up looks amazing and i wish i had the guts to do it. Imagine taking people out on fun activities for a job!!

Enid · 12/06/2005 20:36

oh ok pros and cons

pros: beautiful, very good schools, laid back, near the sea, big arts scene

cons: crap shops, lots of old/tory/white people, no big hills (I like big hills), expensive

kalex · 12/06/2005 20:40

Perth Scotland is FAB, we only keep the temp down so that loads of people don't want to live here,

looking at the property boom it's not working!!!!!

lemonice · 12/06/2005 20:41

our pluses for making the move are we currently live on negligible income so are not now downsizing, we have a tangible asset to sell so will have cash to buy and we don't or won't next year have school age children and sadly no ageing parents to consider...but we do have a young business which is gaining customers and has been hard work and sunk debt to set up but we may be able to take it with us overseas it could definitely be operated from without trouble anywhere in the UK

I like Wales and Suffolk or how about Southern Ireland? OR Isle of Wight (lovely) or Channel Islands OR Southern Italy (big culture shock though!).
Other than those sensible suggestions I would go for loft in Covent Garden or Manhattan

Guardianangel · 12/06/2005 21:03

KatyMac · 12/06/2005 21:14

Norfolk? - i love it east Norfolk is reaal nice so is north I'm not so sure about west (bit too London Orientated?)

Can be quite insular - but very freindle close to the coast close to Norwich

expatinscotland · 12/06/2005 21:24

Bordeaux, of course.

mogwai · 12/06/2005 22:26

I could live in the area around Nice in a heartbeat. I was interested in the list of pros and cons for France.

The smoking is APPALLING!!

moondog · 12/06/2005 22:33

Try Turkey where I am, Mogwai-it is unbelievable. I've lived/do live all over but feel weird about settling permanently somewhere that I don't belong. Just always have the feeling that if Ikeeled over, who, frankly would give a shit?

Love coming home to Wales where everyone knows about me,my family,my dog,how many bottles of wine Idrank last night, when I last washed my car...Makes me feel cared for!

(Appreciate that if you live in the arse end of nowhere then you may possible not feel the same however.)

mogwai · 12/06/2005 22:49

Moondog, your posts always make me laugh. You are so forthright, like me, I love it. Then again you are braver than me in some of the things you post.....I hold back a bit

So they smoke like chimneys in Turkey?

I now have image of you in small Welsh village with glass of Rioja and small yappy-type dog, gossiping with Tom Jones in the background.

I do hope you're not one of those Welsh people who switches from English to Welsh when an English person comes in the room......

moondog · 12/06/2005 22:54

Mogwai..I will not rise to the bait!

Tom Jones indeed!
This is the north,lady!
(Anyway, more likely to be playing something like Led Zeppelin or the Stones!)

Cam · 12/06/2005 23:21

Led Zeppelin or the Stones

So its true about how backward they are in Wales

ScrewballMuppet · 12/06/2005 23:38

Troon in ayrshire scotland lived up here on two occasions each time for about a year. Loved it! I'm aiming to move back as soon as possible. Better life for kids too!

Skribble · 12/06/2005 23:54

Somewhere on the west coast of Scotland, loads of gorgeous places within 1hr drive of Glasgow.
