What playground songs did you used to sing?

Slubberdegullion · 07/10/2009 15:41

My mind has gone blank. What did we used to sing in the playground? I'm pretty sure I sang something.

I'm doing a 100 yesr of memories thing/badge with Rainbows (to tie in with the centenary obv) and one of the activities is teaching them playground songs of yore.

So I have all the old ones (oranges and lemons, london bridge etc) which I NEVER sang and would like to teach them something from my era 1970-80s.

Anything with actions would be superb.

We did the Susie song too, and the teenager version always went 'left my knickers in my boyfriend's car'
also Shine up your buttons with Brasso as above

Are skipping songs any good - we did

On the mountain, stands a lady
Who she is I do not know
All she wants is gold and silver
All she wants is a nice young man
and his name is [insert embarassing name here]
Does she love him?
yes/no/yes/no til skipper fails - if no, stops there, if yes, continues, each time when skipper stops determines the answer
How many babies did they have?
Where were they born (cycle thro kitchen / bathroom / toilet / bedroom !)
Were they black or were they white (!)
Can't remember the other options!!!

My mum remembers singing the same song in the 1940s.

andgodcreatedwoman · 08/10/2009 12:59

I'm Diana Doors
and I'm a movie star
I've got a cute cute figure
and a 40inch bra
I've got the hips
I've got the lips
I've got the legs, the sexy legs.

Oh, and

milk, milk, lemonade
round the corner chocolate's made!

What was wrong with us?

MrsChemist · 08/10/2009 13:02

Chapter one and the story's just begun, singing, do what daddy did to mummy to get me!
Chapter two...

and it goes on in a similar vein, until chapter ten.

GentleOtter · 08/10/2009 16:34

We sang a similar one MrsChemist! I had forgotten all about it.

Now, this is number one
And the fun has just begun
Roll me over, lay me down and do it again
Roll me over, in the clover
Roll me over, lay me down, do it again.

ShellingPeas · 08/10/2009 16:54

I remember that one GentleOtter

This is number two and he's taking off my shoe...
Roll me over etc

And on to

This is number six and he's got me in a fix
Roll me over etc

Can't remember what the next verse was.

BigHairyLeggedSpider · 08/10/2009 17:06

sockmonkey Did you also draw a squiggle on your hand when you were singing "here's Maggie Thatcher?" Also knew all the words to Inky Pinky...

Did you go to school in Norfolk by any chance?

BigHairyLeggedSpider · 08/10/2009 17:10

I'm frankly appalled at all of us!

I didn't remember half of these but it seems we were all depraved.

This is number seven and he's taking me to heaven
Roll me over....

JoeyBettany · 08/10/2009 17:13

I know 'down by the bramble bushes'! [excited emoticon]

'Down by the bramble bushes, down by the sea, boom, boom, boom

True love for you my darling, true love for me

We're getting married, to have a family

A boy for you and a girl for me

Aye, tiddly aye aye Sexy!

I never got how such calculated family planning could be sexy!

WreckOfTheHesperus · 08/10/2009 18:04

Skipping songs

Cinderella
Dressed in yella
Went to the ball to kiss a fella
How many fellas did she kiss then?

(and you all took turns counting and running into the rope)

Vote vote vote for Mrs "first child's name"
Here comes "second child's name" at the door
She's a very fine lady but she's going to have a baby and we don't want "first child's name" anymore

Not sure what kind of political or social message that conveyed to us impressionable youths

nymphadora · 08/10/2009 18:08

Has anyone said the meatball one
[too lazy too look through the thread emoticon]

lilyjen · 08/10/2009 18:16

(Rpeat 3 times)

He jumped 30,000 feet forgot to pull the cord
(repeat 3 times)

he landed on the runway like a lump of strawbrry jam

(repeat 3 times, last line)

IvaNighSpare · 08/10/2009 18:19

My friend Billy had a ten foot willy
He showed it to the girl next door
She thought it was a snake
And hit it with a rake
And now it's only two foot four

A personal favourite

pranma · 08/10/2009 18:23

On top of spaghetti
All covered in cheese
I lost my poor meatball
When somebody sneezed
It rolled of the table
And onto the floor
Then my poor meatball
Rolled out of the door
And onto the pavement
And under a bus
Now my poor meatball
Is nothing but mush.[tune 'on top of old smoky']
Also
A rosy apple a lemon or a pear
A bunch of roses she shall wear
A silver dagger by her side
Who-oo-oo shall be the bride[one in middle of circle selects someone]
Take her by the lily white hand
Lead her to the water
Give her a kiss with a one two three
For she's a rich man's daughter.
or alternatively
A rosy apple a lemon or a tart
Tell me the name of your sweetheart
kids chant the alphabet and when it gets to the right letter one in the middle shouts stop and the child with a name beginning with that takes the place in the middle and it starts again.

alysonpeaches · 08/10/2009 18:30

A sailor went to sea sea sea (clap hands in pairs, facing each other)
To see what he could see see see
And all that he could see see see
Was the bottom of the deep blue sea sea sea.

Wallflowers, wallflowers growing up so high,
Theyre all pretty maids and they all have to die,
Except for Mary Smith (childs name) she's the only one,
So turn your back you saucy cat
You dont belong to us
(Ring game chosen person turns their back to face ring, then continues until another is chosen)

There was a princess long ago (which you probably know so I wont go on>>),

The clapping song
My mummy told me,
If I was goody,
That she would buy me,
a rubber dolly,
My auntie told her,
I Kissed a soldier,
Now she wont buy me,
A rubber dolly,
3,6,9,
The goose drank wine,
........

MrsBadger · 08/10/2009 18:30

Most of the clapping ones i know have already been posted but there are a few more.

Madsometimes, for Orange Balls you went round in a circle holding hands and the last one to sit down at the appropriate moment went in the middle:

Orange Balls, orange balls, here we go again
the last one to sit down has a boyfriend
[much fuss made of naming boy she supposedly likes]
Clap your hands if you love him,
Clap your hands if you love him,
Clap your hands if you love him, here we go again
Stamp your feet if you hate him
Stamp your feet if you hate him
Stamp your feet if you hate him, here we go again
[girl in middle legs it back into ring and the whole thing starts again]

Skipping-wise we usually chanted rather than sang, eg:

Cowboy Joe from Mexico says
hands up, stick 'em up
drop your guns and pick 'em up
(very hard as you had to touch the ground to 'pick them up')

also

All the girls in our town have a happy life
Except for Katy who wants to be a wife
A wife she shall be
A husband she shall have
And that shall be Daniel Harris
She kisses him, she cuddles him
She sits him on her knee
Oh my darling, won't you marry me
yes, no, yes no
etc faster and faster till the skipper trips

Chica31 · 08/10/2009 18:38

I haven't read all of the thread so not sure if someone has already posted it. We did a skipping games with a long rope.

House for sale,
Apply within
When (name) jumps out
(name) goes in

The long rope keeps turning and you have to jump in at the right time to keep in the rhythm of the chant.

When it's your birthday please jump in
January, February ....
Once every one is in,
When it's your birthday please jump out...

Bumper car, bumper car number 48,
Went round the corrrrrrrrrrner.

As you say corner the skipper jumps out the rope runs around one of the children turning and jumps back in again.
Is there more to that rhyme, I can't remember?

Chica31 · 08/10/2009 18:44

The skipping song, vote, vote, vote...

We used to end it. Kick her out shut the door say no more. Then start all over again.

We just to sing a song to english country garden.

Something about
What do you do when you need the loo in an English Country Garden
Pull down your pants and suffocate the ants...
I can't remember the rest.

ConFuschias · 08/10/2009 18:46

This is a clapping sonbg we used to sing:

I am a pretty little Dutchgirl
As pretty, as pretty can be, be, be
And all the boys in the baseball team
Go crazy over me, me, me
One day I went out walking
And saw my boyfriend talking
To a pretty little girl
With strawberry curls
And this is what they said, said, said
I L-O-V-E, love you
I K-I-double-S, kiss you
I jumped in the lake
And swallowed a snake
And came up with a belly ache

Smithagain · 08/10/2009 18:46

We used to sing:

A and B up a tree
K-I-S-S-I-N-G
First comes love, then comes marriage,
Then comes the baby in the baby carriage.

DD1, on the other hand, sings:

A and B up a tree
K-I-S-S-I-N-G
And that's not all, and that's not all
The baby's drinking alcohol.

Sign of the times!!

Chica31 · 08/10/2009 18:50

We used to sing a chorus to the RAF song..

Glory, glory, what a hell of a way to die
Descending from a plane
And not knowing how to fly
Glory, glory what a hell of a way to die
And he ain't going jump no more.

Sorry I love this thread, I seem to be posting to myself now... (blush)

bamboobutton · 08/10/2009 19:01

one of the favourites at my school went:

5-4-3-2-1
grandad had a gun,
shot my nanny up the fanny
5-4-3-2-1

and also

milk, milk, lemonade round the corner chocolate's made.

BriocheDoree · 08/10/2009 19:12

fishflange · 08/10/2009 19:15

Remembering this one made my face go

To the tune of "The Great Escape" (I think. It's the one that goes dee-doo, dee dee dee dee-doo):

Mummy, you know the boy next door?
Mummy, he had me on the floor.
Mummy, look at my tummy,
It's growing bigger and bigger each day.

Herbert, look what you've done to me,
Herbert, I'm having your baby,
Herbert, let's call it Sherbert,
Then there'll be Herbert and Sherbert and me!

I remember being highly disapproving of this song on the grounds that "Sherbert" was a stupid name for a baby.
