I know other people have bigger problems, but our 6 month old cat hasn't come home today and I'm heartbroken

He's the friendliest, daftest cat in the world - not afraid of anyone or anything and has never not come home before, so I can only assume he's either been run over or taken

He's so beautiful - ginger and white - and we've had him since he was 6 weeks old. He was neutered last week and I feel like we've only just got him and now he's gone.

Am trying very hard not to cry and lose the plot and have done notices to put up tomorrow and we'll phone all the local vets, but I think my lovely Barley has gone.

awww - thanks - it's so good to be able to witter on here, knowing that you lot already know I'm bonkers - trying to hold it together and be slightly more sane in real life..!

Dp's not back yet - I'm not thinking she'll come home with him tonight, but hopefully it'll spur someone on to contact us if they see him.

Stupid really - I said to dp either earlier today or yesterday that he might have followed the children to school but we dismissed it as being silly 'cos he's never done it before. But most mornings we have to carry him back home as he follows us when we leave the house - we stick him in the furthest room and run for it!

Will have to keep him in when it's the school run if we get him back I think. And collar and microchip him.

Oh god - now I'm starting to have more hope it's even more terrifying!

You still have hope until dp comes home.

seeyounexttuesday · 06/10/2009 08:26

any news dotty?

jellyjelly · 06/10/2009 09:30

YM girls cats had been spayed then one left on one of the first nights after being left out. One cat is pretty much a housecat the other is not at all.

It turned out that the cat flap had broken and she couldnt get it, I left food out side for her and I left the middle door open as she likes to come and say hi in the night. She managed to get in and woke me up at 4am purring. She was very happy to be back.

There is still time but leave some food outside for the cat.

DottyDot · 06/10/2009 11:38

Well no Barley safely back yet but lots of positive news. Dp managed to speak to a teacher last night who lives near the school and she confirmed he was definitely in the playground on Thursday being fussed over by lots of school children.

We each took turns last night to leaflet the area and I spoke to a couple who think they were in their garden at teatime yesterday! (of course I burst into tears all over them... but they're cat people and understand..!). They also said if they see him again they'll try and get him in and phone us.

So, I've laminated loads more posters to put up around the school today and as soon as I'm home from work will start walking up and down...

Dotty, I have a lovely, stupid ginger and white cat who also went missing like that when he was six months old. He was gone for two weeks - I posted on here at the time. He is just like your cat, stupidly friendly and loves to follow people along the road.
Anyway, some friends found him wandering about a mile from our house late one night and phoned us to come and get him.
I am sure, since Barley has been spotted, that someone will scoop him up and return him in the next day or two.
He is probably being fed - our cat is NOTORIOUS in a half-mile radius of our house for going in through cat flaps and making himself at home. He is quite the local character. However, he has stayed quite close to home since his big adventure and hopefully Barley will return and do the same.
I suspect they want to come home but aren't aas good at finding their way as cats are supposed to be.
Fingers crossed for you.

FABIsInTraining · 06/10/2009 12:10

Our cat flap has a key so only our cat can get in and out. Much more reassuring as there are lots of cats around here.

englishpatient · 06/10/2009 12:36

Just come across this thread and hoping you will have some good news to tell us soon about Barley.

Stayingscarygirl · 06/10/2009 12:40

Dotty, our black and white cat has gone missing twice recently. Once he'd got himself shut in the neighbours garage, so it's definitely worth asking people to check sheds and garages; and we have no idea where he'd been the second time - he wasn't looking ill-kempt or hungry when he came home, so we assume he was off on an adventure somewhere. Both times he was missing for two or three days, but both times came home safely.

thirtysomething · 06/10/2009 14:33

Keeping my fingers (and paws!) crossed for you....have a real sense that Barley isn't far away and just wandered a little bit too far to find his way back.....male cats are terrible wanderers esp before they have been neutered. Hopefully you will be back on here soon with some very good news!

ParisFrog · 06/10/2009 14:43

I've got another couple of stories about cats going missing (and doesn't it worry you sick!)

My cat went missing for over 48 hours when she was a kitten. Came back of her own accord and refused to leave the house for 2 weeks cos she'd scared herself!

Sadder story though - my friend's cat ran off when they moved house. They did the whole poster thing but no luck, we all assumed he'd gone feral/gotten run over. SIX YEARS later she met him near her house - he'd been adopted by another family only a couple of streets away. Heartbreaking because he'd been so close all that time but now he was with a family with young children who adored the cat so she couldn't bear to take him back (although the generous mum offered).

Really hope he turns up soon

FABIsInTraining · 06/10/2009 18:00

What a lovely lady, ParisFrog.

Come on Barley. We all need you home.

Ripeberry · 06/10/2009 18:10

Feel for you My Bengal cat has now been missing for two months, he disapeared on the day we got out tent trailer out of the garage (he knows it means he going to the cattery), so at the time I assumed he was just hiding from us.
We went away for three weeks and asked the neighbours to keep an eye out for him (they had our house keys).
But he never turned up. I even e-mailed the council to ask what they do if they find dead domestic animals and they said that they will check for microchips (which he has).
I've put up posters even offering a reward (as he is a valuable pet but not show quality)but not a sausage.
Keep thinking I can hear him miaowing and I was hoping that if someone had pinched him that his miaowing would have driven them crazy by now and they would let him go.
But I'm in the middle of the countryside so I'm starting to think, did he get caught in a snare, did some hunter shoot him?, Has he been poisoned.
It's the NOT knowing that upsets me

PfftTheMagicDragon · 06/10/2009 18:19

My cat went to live with an old lady for a couple of months last year. She's back now and just as flighty

TheBolter · 06/10/2009 18:24

Just marking this Dottydot. As a fellow cat lover, and proud owner of a year-old ginger and white kitty I really feel for you. I know I would be gutted and I really hope all will be well.

Positive signs though .

daftpunk · 06/10/2009 18:28

i know how you must feel... i love my cat.

fingers crossed for you

DottyDot · 06/10/2009 19:05

He's back!!!!!

Good grief - I'd just got back home from putting up 16 more posters and leafleting another couple of roads when the vets phoned (we'd contacted all the local vets last Friday) to say a ginger and white kitten had been brought in.

I went to check and it was him! A lady from the other side of Heaton Moor (nowhere near where he was spotted and over Stockport Road - very busy main road) had taken him in. I hadn't leafleted or postered anywhere near there as it's a good mile or so away in and in the opposite direction to where he was last seen!

Anyway, many, many tears all over the vet nurses - who got quite emotional as well - and he's back home. Seems fine - hasn't lost any weight and is a little bit disoriented but eating and purring lots!

Ripeberry - I'm so sorry your cat is still missing - I feel your pain - the not knowing truly is the worst - and really hope that you get a happy ending too - thinking of you
