How often do you wash your kitchen floor?

I am trying very hard to be a better housewife (aaaaargh!) and seem to have improved on the regularity of doing laundry/vacuuming/proper cooking (not reheating ready meals!).

But what about floor sweeping/washing? That Housework Woman in the Saturday Telegraph says sweep the kitchen floor after every meal and wash it once a day. Seems like an awful lot of faff (sp?) to me or am I slovenly?

Well, the whole house gets hoovered/swept on Monday, and I wash the kitchen floor afterwards. Then it gets an occasional swwep when I can't stand the crumbs under my (always bare) feet any longer. I'm with those who don't like ant-bacterials and fanatic cleanliness.

Do people really wash their floor every day????

I actually use the floor wipes on the end of a swiffer to mop.

I'm not really bothered about the floor being clean I would just like it to look clean. Also if its not too bad I don't feel too guilty about picking DS's food up off the floor and putting it on his plate.

We have an awful white patterned vinyl floor - WHITE! what a blooming stupid colour to have in a kitchen. Anyway I mop about very week, when its sooooo bad I just can't leave it any longer.

I wash our floor when the kids feet start sticking to it! And I'm not joking!!

buttercup · 14/05/2003 13:00

when there's enough food on it to make a meal from.

Oh how I hate my kitchen floor.

Naively, I fell in love with a dark green welsh slate floor, that was duely laid when we had our new kitchen fitted. Little did I know that two years later it would be stained, the surface is so rough that it is impossible to sweep and mops are shredded after a few washings.

Consequently it gets cleaned about once a month. Now DD is mobile she looks like she has done a shift on the coal face after crawling across it.

Thank goodness we have a dog to eat up her high chair fallout...

Now, don't get me started on balls of dog hair rolling around like tumbleweed in a bad cowboy film.

weekly - the kids sweep all the downstairs as we have laminate flooring then one of us grown ups mops - once a week

unless the dog is in season or decides to shed so much fur you could knit a jumper

It's fascinating isn't it - what goes on behind closed doors, the bits you never get to see. Me? Well I'm with the slobs! A while ago my mother bullied me into a routine where I cleaned it once a week while ds was at playgroup - well that lasted about 2 weeks....there's just much more interesting stuff to do than clean. I really must get more organised with the cleaning (if only to avoid having so much to do in one go when there's someome coming (like tomorrow - I've been cleaning ALLL day today)). At the moment it basically gets done when it visably needs it...

Twice in 6 months. Our kitchen has dark grey bumpy tiles so you cant see anything anyway. When we lived in Spain, I was so terrified of cockroaches, I bleached all the floors twice a day. A bit obsessive according to dh. Cant believe we'll get roaches in England no matter how dirty the floor is so stuff it. Always better things to do.

meanmum · 15/05/2003 13:05

Someone suggested getting a dog so you don't have to do it. No need for that just use your children. My ds has this habit, if his hands are already full, of bending down and eating straight off the floor if he has dropped something he really wants.

Tetley · 15/05/2003 13:13

Once a week at the most! Unless the cats have brought in half eaten animals (again....!!)& left blood & guts on the floor - then I do tend to clean that up - but if I've only recently done the whole floor I will only clean the bloody bit - can't be bothered to do the whole floor!
I sweep up a bit more often - probably once a day - when bits stick to my socks!

I love these threads! I always thought I was such a slob - now I know that most of us are
I'm so glad that other people also try to avoid anti-bacterial cleaners. I hate the whole idea of them. However, I'm struggling to find a kitchen cleaner that isn't. The only one I've found so far is Sainsbury's own, but it smells so strongly of bleach that it makes my eyes sting. Anyone got any recommendations???

daily. muddy dog, muddy children, son with an inability to keep food in his bowl coupled with an insane passion for messy fingerpainting.

but I must admit when I say "I clean it daily" I really mean "the housekeeper cleans it daily". I'm a bit lucky that way...

chiggles · 15/05/2003 13:57

Every day!!? I do mine about once a month. Tried to do it the other day and ds (22 monts) decided he wanted to help. I ended up with a swimming pool and him skidding round the floor. Had to re-wash 2 big towels that I used to try to dry it. If it looks dirty I'll clean it. I tried to be a better housewife too. Until I get paid what I'm worth I won't bother!
Just finised most of this thread and I think I'd better go and tidy up!! Wish I'd never read it.

Thank you for this post!

I thought I was slovenly so started trying to do different chores on set days (I know, too much time on my hands ) I decided to do the floor Mon, Wed and Fri but it never works that way and I am lucky if I vacuum twice each week and clean once. I don't use a mop, I have one of those steam cleaner things which is fantastic for dissolving sticky mess on floors. Also have a laminate floor in the sitting & dining rooms - useless for small child and not what I would choose again - which I try to vacuum a bit more frequently since this is where DS mostly plays.
