The comics of our youth (or at least old farts like me!)

Anyone else remember the 4 Marys?

And almost all of them seemed to have a story about a working class 'gal' who was a brilliant runner coached by a strange, bitter coach who walked with a cane.

And Jackie talked about boys! Cathy and Claire!

Not much changes, eh Cod?! Start out with Cathy and Claire, move on to Mumsnet...

happymerryberries · 22/05/2005 16:46

Someone I knew in collage was a 'model' for one of the photoshoot stories.

We ripped the shit out of him something rotten!

I also remember one surreal probelm that was all about a girl who thought she was growing a tail from the base of her spine! Honest!!!

Were any of you lot responsible for that one???

caligula, I remember the French resistance story too, everyone hated the girl hero because they thought she was a collaborator but she only did that to put the Nazis off her scent.

I read Jackie too, it was sooooooooo cool, then J17 from the very first issue. That was a great magazine, just the right balance - I learned a lot from it about sex (my parents told me zilch and by the time the school did it was a bit late) - and it covered serious issues, too - I remember it had articles on Amnesty International and also one on the reality of prostitution. I was 13 when I started to read J17 and it worries me that its content is now considered normal for primary school children. My cousin's daughter stayed with us once and in many ways she was still very innocent - into animals and cuddly toys - and the magazine she arrived with had a headline about a girl who got pregnant by her own father.

Another thing about Jackie and J17 was that there was no pressure to be thin, and the fashion was accessible - I can remember Bananrama talking about how they made their own clothes. Oxfam chic was cool then too - nowadays it's called 'vintage' and costs a fortune. I don't see anything about today's magazines for girls (or women for that matter) that does anything for self-worth - it's all about trying to attain a perfection that is unacheivable by all but a few - and a very shallow ideal of perfection at that.

my dd reads mags called sugar and another called bliss some of the storiesin there are really worrying.

highlander · 22/05/2005 17:28

Arrrgh HMB - I distinctly remember the story about the working class runner!!! He was a pigeon fancier if I remember correctly, and there was one story dedicated to correcting her breathing when she ran. Can't believe I remember that

Viz did an absolutely brilliant piss-take last summer called, 'Steve McFadden at the pony ballet school'.

Those were the days. I used to love Tuesdays cos my Bunty got delivered and my sister and I would fight over it on the school bus .

Oh total snap Suedonim, Bunty not Judy and also "shared" Look and Learn with my elder bro. My younger bro and sister had "Treasure".
I remember Eagle as being all war stories particularly with Jap kamikaze pilots going Tora!Tora!Tora!

Are you sure we didn't have the same parents

Cam · 22/05/2005 17:50

Later went on to Jackie but this was soon ousted by Skoolkids Oz

happymerryberries · 22/05/2005 17:55

My brother had look and learn as well. Subtle programing by our parents possibly?

'Go out and be a scientist my son, and you can read this crap about ballet dancers darling'

I got Bunty until I was 16 when we moved and I was too embarrassed to get it from the newsagent. My aunt got it well into her 50s(she never moved ) and Mandy and June & Schoolfriend, at least until they stopped printing them.
My sister got Jackie and Honey, anyone remember that?
I also liked Oink! when I was older, anyone get that?

ScummyMummy · 22/05/2005 18:52

Didn't realise that Bunty had folded. Sob. It was great! Loved all the moral fibre during times of terrible hardship and wickedness type stories.

Davros · 22/05/2005 18:53

Ooh, Petticoat, yes!

lemonice · 22/05/2005 18:58

On a slightly different note I remeber reading an article in Honey i think on backstreet abortions and their dangers when did it become legal?
