FCUK am I getting old?

Am I getting old or does anyone else find this French connection clothing range offensive.

I find it gross that young children are walking round with this on their chests and quite often the slogans are obviously so that FCUK is an anagram.

Tell me I'm not the only one pleeeese.

I don't find it offensive but more annoying. I have some French Connection clothes which fit really well. I wanted another little top to go under my suit jacket (and I could wear on its own) for work. I can't wear FCUK on my clothes at work, or when visiting grandparents, people with children, etc....

Rhubarb · 08/05/2003 21:49

You're not the only one, at the expense of sounding like a prude, I hate their bloody logo!

meanmum · 08/05/2003 21:51

I have never liked it. It's not subtle, clever or funny. I find it offensive and on principal will never buy from there. I think the reason I find it offensive is because the brand is aimed at young people who are impressionable and their marketing seems to be becoming more and more indecent. It's like being slapped in the face with unecessary and graphic images/words when there is just no need. What happened to the beauty of subtelty in marketing.

lilibet · 08/05/2003 21:53

So glad you said that! At the risk of sounding like my Mum, I find a lot of clothes for children these days quite offensive. Esp t shirts with slogans on them. One little girl who can't have been more then 6 was walking round tesco with a tshirt that said ' if you think I'm a bitch, you should see my Mum'It is really not on!

eidsvold · 08/05/2003 21:53

totally agree with those who think it is unnecessary and offensive and so not funny

RockingRosebud · 08/05/2003 21:54

Did anyone see The Batchelor recently? Well the batchelor went to visit one of the prospective girlfriends parents wearing one of these hideous jumpers. Yeeeuk.

It was one of those things that I laughed at when I first saw it, and now I think - yeah Right - move on! I can just see the marketing execs sitting around going "oooh - arn't we funny" No wonder none of us can say a definate "YES" on the are we rich thread - as we realise that our savings for a city break in Prague will now only buy us a shite black teeshirt with a stupid logo on the front.

F lipping C ak and U psetting the K arma

Tortington · 08/05/2003 22:44

i like it ( surprise) but its not spelled correctly

nerdgirl · 09/05/2003 07:44

I want to know why they sell the damn things in Ireland! What is the UK supposed to stand for over here!?! So I find it doubly offensive.

Mum2Toby · 09/05/2003 07:55

I like it too!

Tossum · 09/05/2003 09:48

I agree totally with meanmum, about how completely unsubtle and unclever it is. The 'jokes' over, its like people walking around shoving semi-obscene graffitti into everyone elses faces. At least punkers/skaters etc. are trying to make an individualistic statement when they try to be obscene in public, this lot are just sheep to the marketing slaughter.(ramble ramble)
This is coming from a 25 year old bloke who says the actual f. work pretty much every other scentence, the point is I wouldnt say it to my gran.

Ghosty · 09/05/2003 09:51

Custy!

scoobysnax · 09/05/2003 10:05

The FCUK logo is stupid and naff IMO. However, I would have to defend the rights of individuals to buy and wear clothes with the slogan on - its like a freedom of speech thing.

What I think is wrong is the advertising which I think offends too many of the public to be allowed by advertsing standards.
I read the other day that a billboard with just FCUK in huge letters is the first thing you see from the sky when landing at one of the UK airports and that just makes me feel sad and embarrassed that it's the first impression some people have of our country...

tigermoth · 09/05/2003 10:51

hate it, hate it. Hope that billboard ad is not a permanent one - agree it is really sad if it is the first thing air passengers read.

I remember buying French Connection clothing when it first came out. Everything was in cotton and ethnic with a 70's twist. I used to buy quite a lot of stuff from French Connection even up to 5 years ago, but find that logo has taken over more and more.

However, their warehouse sales are really worth going to - rail after rail of vestly reduced items - if you live near East London. Phone French Connection head office and they'll put you on the mailing list.

I have heard from two friends who work in retail fashion that French Connection also stands for Faulty Cr**. The quality of the garments can be very poor (I agree) so many get returned.

katierocket · 09/05/2003 11:08

Oooo....I agree with snickers - at first I thought it was clever, whatever you may think about it - from a marketing perpective it worked. It completely turned a failing company around. I'm not saying that's necessarily a good thing but it is a fact. I just think it's a little tired now, they've milked it too much.

I can't say I find it offensive though.

katierocket · 09/05/2003 11:15

Oh and I meant to say that you/we are probably not the target audience and the fact that an adult finds it offensive probably makes it more appealing for a teenager.

tigermoth · 09/05/2003 11:23

true katierocked. I feel FC and I have outgrown each other a bit. But still think the FC joke was only funny for a short time and it is way past its sell by date.

Marina · 09/05/2003 12:08

Glad I'm not the only one who finds the campaign a bit tired and offensive these days. And, Tigermoth - I LIVED in their viscose hippy stuff as a student and loved it. I think I read somewhere that Tanya Sarne was their main designer then, or was it Nicole Farhi? You might know. Anyway, I am definitely too old for them now

Furball · 09/05/2003 13:52

I agree, it is offensive and I swear like a trooper at the best of times.

But I find even worse are these Joe Bloggs T-Shirts.

COOL A5 FUC:

FUC7-ED>UP

FUC.1N>5ICK

Who wants to wear that across their chest? I really feel that the likes of my OAP parents and probably most people over the age of 25! don't want to be reading that walking down the high street.

Lindy · 09/05/2003 14:01

I agree - it is totally offensive, horrible, etc - also I think I read somewhere that Boots are tying in with them to boost their flagging sales, which is something to do with the bill boards that Snoobysnax mentions, now I will boycott Boots as well (not hard as we live in such a rural area there isn't one for miles!).

katierocket · 09/05/2003 14:01

but surely that's what teenagers do, they rebel, have dodgy hairstyles and wear crap offensive clothes. It's always happened. Look what an outrage the Sex pistols and punks caused.

Bobsmum · 09/05/2003 14:02

I don't like it and never have - especially when kids wear it or want it. Some band T shirts can be just as bad. Marilyn Mansun stuff made to fit 9 years old - no no no no no !!

SamboM · 09/05/2003 14:06

I can't see anything wrong with it personally. All they want is people to talk about their brand and it obviously works!

I find it hard to get offended by a misspelt word which quite frankly is not that offensive these days anyway (well not to me)

It becuase of children I don't like it. When my sister was little she used to read everything even the grafiti on the walls. So, can you imagine how bad it will be if one of our little ones start reading these phrases out - probably in front of their great grandparents!
