Any American mums feeling out of place?

Foz · 19/05/2005 12:01

I have been living in the north with DH and DS (20 mnths) and just don't feel like I fit in. I miss my girlfriends in the states and find it so much easier to make friends in the US. I think it is to do with the british culture of privacy. I go to these toddler groups and other mums don't really talk to each other.

So, just feeling a bit lonely and homesick...anyone else?

I'm not American but just wanted to say hello, Anoah Smile. Expat, I don't think you've been fair. I know this is an old title and somewhat rude and perhaps Anoah, should have just put a call out or started a new thread. I don't think she thought about the subject of the original thread.

oliveoil · 13/04/2006 10:54

She didn't say she didn't fit it! She posted to see if Foz was still around and wanted to chat.

Back off you two, bloody hell!

dinosaure · 13/04/2006 10:55

Smile Anoah, just posted on your other thread about your DS.

expatinscotland · 13/04/2006 10:55

What's unfair, lucy? I mean, start up a new thread then! To find this one would require some digging. If you've gone that far to figure that out, then you can also figure out how to start a new thread.

Oh god! DC said the p-word! Now it's really gonna kick off.

dinosaure · 13/04/2006 10:57

What, perm?

expatinscotland · 13/04/2006 10:57

ppp-ppp- 'pikey'

dinosaure · 13/04/2006 10:58
Wink
DaddyCool · 13/04/2006 10:59

sorry anoah. i don't mean to get on your case and i just read your original post. you didn't say you don't fit in, you just wanted a chat. the thread title says that foz doesn't fit in.

sorry. my apologies. don't go home Smile

lucy5 · 13/04/2006 10:59

Expat i agree, a new thread should have been started, I just thought you jumped on her pretty quickly. Anyway, I'm just being English and sticking my nose in where it's not wanted Wink

lucy5 · 13/04/2006 11:00

What's pikey?

alexsmum · 13/04/2006 11:00

but sometimes if you start a new thread you get someone saying ' for gods sake search the archives'!
it was a bit hostile expat.....( backs of tentatively )

DaddyCool · 13/04/2006 11:01

a travelling person. most likely the dodgy, scamming type who dump loads of crap all over the roads and parking lots before they move on.

we had a group of pikies camp out in our parking lot at work. we now have a 'anti-pikey' bar across the entrace to prevent large caravans getting through.

i watched with glee as a young pikey person pissed up the MD's tyres.

notasheep · 13/04/2006 11:02

A pikey travels

DaddyCool · 13/04/2006 11:04

i went on to a pikey website (though it wasn't actually termed as that) in america where it shows you all the places you can get away with camping free without getting hassled.

there wasn't much in the US, just Wal-Mart parking lots.

there were comments like "yeah, the sign says no camping but know one cares. go for it" lol.

oliveoil · 13/04/2006 11:06

It was very hostile but Expat can be like that I find.

Hey ho, hope Anoah hasn't been scared off.

Anoah · 13/04/2006 11:06

Oh duh, I never thought to start a new thread! I just was thought it sounded like Foz wanted someone to chat with so i thought I would try and get in touch with her. Yeah, if I had to do it over I would have started a "hey Foz" thread.

lucy5 · 13/04/2006 11:07

Oh I thought it was a North American word, we have that in Uk too. Not a very PC word though Daddycool Wink

DaddyCool · 13/04/2006 11:10

aaahhh f*ck PC! Grin

DaddyCool · 13/04/2006 11:11

it's a UK word. Apparently the official meaning behind pikey is a 'traveller from kent' lol.

lucy5 · 13/04/2006 11:11

Hehehehehe! Grin

DaddyCool · 13/04/2006 11:12

and the term is usually a 'kentish pikey'.

see... you learn something new every day.

crazycanuck · 13/04/2006 11:22

good grief, talk about unneccesary agro-ness!! I am also a transplanted Canadian (loved that convo from last year re: Honey moon Suite and the like!) and I also have found the mother-toddler groups here a bit of a confidence basher. Though I have never been to any anywhere else so I can't really compare. I am always willing to initiate conversations and every time I attempted that at the groups I received one word replies and they actually turned their backs to me and ignored me! I don't think it's an inherently British thing, maybe something to do with those groups in particular... who knows. I have friends here who have had similar experiences and they are British. Maybe we are all extremely 'off-putting' and that's why we're friends! :o

crazycanuck · 13/04/2006 11:23

there's a very funny book called 'oi-pikey!' about the 'pikey lifestyle' that you should check out!

DaddyCool · 13/04/2006 11:39

nice one! see my thread in 'chat'. i've managed to offend.. which has made me very happy indeed.

DaddyCool · 13/04/2006 11:43

Anoah?.......... are you a pikey?
