I have just heard on the radio that Amanda Holden actually has it in her will that she would like Abba's dancing queen played at her funeral and wants everyone to dance to it.Got me thinking just for fun what song would mumsnetters have played at theirs which best discribes their personality.

I'm greedy - I want loads!

Young At Heart by The Bluebells (happy)
Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve (melancholy but uplifting)
Julia by Chris Rhea (self-indulgent)
Let Love Be Your Energy by Robbie Williams (happy)

For one so young, I've got some old songs in there!!!

Okay, now I've thought. I'd like 'Sail Away To The Sea' by The Strawbs with Sandy Denny.

The hands on the clock keep turning round
they point to the time of the day.
But time means nothing with you by my side,
though sometime I'll be on my way.
Down the road to where I must go
there's nothing between you and me.
I'll take a boat down the river my love
and sail away to the sea.
I'll sail away to the sea.

What will you take to remember me by?
I've no money to buy you a smile.
I can't find the words to bid you farewell
so I'll carry them with me awhile.
Down the road to where I must go
there's nothing between you and me.
I'll take a boat down the river my love
and said away to the sea.
I'll sail away to the sea.

You'll wave good bye till I pass out of sight
as I'm saying goodbye for good.
I can't even take you part of the way
I only wish that I could.
Down the road to where I must go
there's nothing between you and me.
I'll take a boat down the river my love
and sail away to the sea.
I'll sail away to the sea.

My Dad had "Red Red Wine" at his and my gran was shocked! But it was his favourite (drink and song).

stupidgirl · 06/04/2004 01:47

Oh, I'm going to have to give this some thought. I want to have my funeral planned to the letter. I'm going to be buried in a cardboard coffin and have a tree planted on my grave....I'm going away now to raid the CD collection and choose some music...

Janh · 06/04/2004 01:58

Bridge Over Troubled Water ("when you're weary....feeling small"

Plus, like stupidgirl, the cardboard coffin etc. We have a woodland burial area at the local cem. Like that idea.

Oh - Lou - I just saw your mum had that...

Janh · 06/04/2004 02:01

oops. accidental winkie as usual. Must Not Put Quotes Inside Brackets.

Jennyb851 · 06/04/2004 05:06

Without me, eminem? that might raise a few eyebrows. seriously dont know what i would choose but just want everyone to get horrendously drunk, puke up in the plant pots etc and the vicar could tell some "interesting" stories about stupid things i did. i only want tears of laughter at mine!

Ghosty · 06/04/2004 08:12

DH will definitely get the BBC theme tune to the Cricket highlights ......
Don't know about me ...

Azure · 06/04/2004 11:56

I don't want anything jolly or uplifting at my funeral - I'm dead, people should be miserable.

bluestar · 06/04/2004 16:44

I think whatever music you have or hear at a funeral cuts deep; I always have the music in my head for many days after. Not sure what I would choose though. Never really thought about it. Did go to my godfather's a while ago and all I remember is thinking please don't let my funeral be like that as it felt so rushed and the vicar even forgot to read the poem (end of day on a Friday and desperate to get home?). Anyway I told my sister (who was with me at the time) that I didn't want mine to be like that.

wobblyknicks · 06/04/2004 16:51

My funeral would have to start early and go on until the middle of the night, until the last person fell asleep in their chair. If it's the last thing I have any control over, I want to be really selfish and make sure its all about me, me, me - going on about how gorgeous and wonderful I was and how everyone will miss me and about how the world isn't as good a place now because I'm gone.

I know that's OTT but its the last thing I'll ever get so might as well make it good! Don't want anyone being depressed, just pissed!

Angeliz · 06/04/2004 17:00

At my uncles funeral two weeks ago they played Demis Roussos- goodbye my love goodbye and i was in bits! Could just see him dancing round singing to it!!
At the end of the funeral they played Daniel Bedingfeild 'If you're not the one'

sibble · 07/04/2004 08:22

You've all set me thinking -
think it would have to be 'harvest moon' - Neil Young although agree with the 'anything by maria calas'
We played 'Ernie' and 'song sung blue' for my grandad at home after his funeral whilst consummming the wardrobe full of alcohol he had so kindly stashed away for 'the send off' he always used to say - 'I don't want anybody to sit around being miserable because I'll be sitting up there having a good drink without your Nan going on about it'. Mind you he was a character he wanted to be cremated then put in an egg timer, becasue he had worked all his life so why stop just becasue he was dead!!

I want 'The way of the world' by Earth Wind and Fire. It's my all time favourite recording. I just love the way the record's been produced and the melody of it.

My dad hadn't really specified what he wanted so I decided on 'When I grow too old to dream' by the Black and White Minstrels. It summed up my childhood because I remember him singing along to the record when I was around 8. There wasn't a dry eye in the crem. because the words became very appropriate.

My ex. wants 'Shine on you crazy diamond' Kiwisbird.

kiwisbird · 07/04/2004 14:05

I'm not your ex dottee I hope
I only want it cos it's long, mournful and depressing, how I imagine people to be at my funeral
The reality will be far different, I can quite imagine DH's choice for me would be
You're free to do what you want babeeeeeeeeeee

Slinky · 08/04/2004 15:56

I've been thinking about this recently since a funeral DH and I went to a few weeks back.

At this funeral, they played "All the Time in the World" by Louis Armstrong and "I'll be missing you" by Puff Daddy

My brother and I were chatting about it the other day - he wants "Disco Inferno" and we all have to sing "burn, baby, burn" LOL!

My friend's Uncle was a huge Glenn Miller fan and wanted lots of his music played. Unfortunately, the Crem. staff screwed up so instead of a Glenn Miller track being played when the curtain went across - "That's Entertainment" by the Jam came on!

JennH · 08/04/2004 17:45

In the arms of the angels by Sarah McLaughlan.

Angeliz · 08/04/2004 18:15

I LOVE that one too,(In the arms of the angels)
I think i'd like Amazing Grace as a traditional and then for a second one..........I did it my way might be good! (As i'm known for being a bit of an awkward cow)
I do love that song......sung by Elvis, yep, that's me sorted!

fisil · 08/04/2004 18:25

I'm with you Azure on this one. You often hear people saying "I want people to laugh and dance and have fun at my funeral" but I've always felt that I really rather hope people are going to be tearful and upset, or at the very least a little bit sad. So maybe I should chose music to ensure this ... tears from heaven?

Lara2 · 09/04/2004 23:34

Come On Baby Light My Fire - as my coffin disappears behind the curtain!!

Spudbaby · 10/04/2004 00:48

It would have to be Always look on the bright side of life by The Monty Python Team at the start. I would want no black as it would be a celebration of life. I would possibly have One Love by U2 with something upbeat at the finish. No ideas at the moment but any suggestions would be helpful.

gothicmama · 10/04/2004 16:54

It would have to be a song by New Model Army which has the line "throw a great big party to remember who she was" in it- oh going to have to dig out the old albums now to find out what it's called. Followed by Ace of Spades by ACDC just because it seems to have become a bit of an anthem in our house and to think about everyone reliving happy memories would be nice

justiner · 10/04/2004 17:12

I got married to You'll Never Walk Alone and I think I'll have to be cremated to it also... me and about a million scousers that is.

Clover · 11/04/2004 17:12

Going Underground by the Jam?
