I'd be really interested to know what careers mumsnetters have. I know it's very nosy but I've seen all sorts on these pages. So...I was a teacher of English as a foreign language and the voice of a mouse for a video game and a singing butterfly and I have done voices for companies which want an answerphone message ("just a moment please hold the line" etc ) Anyone else?

Hi again Mum2toby (and apologies to anyone else we're boring to death here). Info on the Edinburgh course is here:
www.qmuc.ac.uk/courses/UGConvCourse.cfm?c_id=83
If you want any more detail I know the coordinator, so I can easily get you more info.
I didn't do my degree in Scotland, but I've been here 10 years now (so you can tell I'm getting on a bit!).

mum2toby · 05/05/2003 15:32

Thanks Tamum, but I don't think I've got the right qualifications for it. It seems to lean very much toward people with healthcare experience.

Ah well, it was just a thought.

pupuce · 05/05/2003 15:39

I am doula
Before that I was a senior manager of a major blue chip company.... oh life was different !

pie · 05/05/2003 15:47

I am a SAHM, though before I got pregnant all those years ago I was pursuing a career in acadmemia (Philosophy). Now I've been working on a novel for the past 2 years...not sure if I'll ever get there on that one.

JanZ · 05/05/2003 15:59

I'm a "Major Account Manager" in a telecoms company - basically it means I'm in Sales. My background's mixed though - French and Economics degree (from a Scottish Uni), followed by industrial marketing, a bit of management consultancy, a few years NHS management, some more marketing (a wee bit in the Further Education sector, which was hellish) before joining the telecoms sector and my current company and after a couple of years finally falling into Sales where I've been now for the last 3 years. (I actually told my now boss I was pregnant before I even moved across into his section!)

Rhiannon · 05/05/2003 16:03

I am a SAHM but I also sell second children's clothes on the internet. I really enjoy it and it keeps me busy. I keep all the stuff in the loft, have it all on rails for different seasons and keep in touch with people to let them know I have new things in.

SoupDragon · 05/05/2003 16:04

I operate a sex chat line.

mum2toby · 05/05/2003 16:05

Oooo soup Dragon. Are you looking for new recruits??

SoupDragon · 05/05/2003 16:07

Well, actually I'm only a SAHM but last week I had a dodgy throat which gave me a fantastic husky voice. Was wasted on DH though! Just thought SAHM sounded really dull!

tamum · 05/05/2003 16:24

Hey, mum2toby, you could pay your way through your counselling course like that! On a more serious note, I take your point about the website I sent you, but I am virtually certain that you just need a biology degree. That's definitely the case with other courses.

i am a teacher and i have just written a teachers workbook which is due to be published soon - whymummy i read that you are hopeing to publish your book - well i approached a couple of publishers who concentrated on books for teachers - i then wrote a letter to a few and wrote my idea for a book and why i thought there would be a demand for it - luckily one publisher liked my ideas and asked to see some chapters that i had written - she even came to see me at home as i was pregnant at the time - anyway she liked it and i went on to complete the book - should be published in September - it has always been my dream to write and i'm finally fulfilling it - please let me know if you need more information and good luck

whymummy · 05/05/2003 18:13

whymummy darling, I could be, but I've done all my work in France so I'm probably not the one you can blame if you live in Britain.

are you a publisher mmm?

Jimjams · 05/05/2003 20:17

I wanted to get into genetic counselling tamum- but there aren't any courses down here. If we'd stayed in London I was thinking of doing the Imperial Course.

I am jack of all trades master of none. First degree Zoology (hi m2t), then year in Japan teaching in an agricultural high school, then PhD in genetics, then teaching A level biology in a tutorial college in London, now mainly sahm although I do one night a week for channel 4 on their homework high website, teaching Biology. In the meatime set up a local group for autism down here- and occasionally get involved in national campaigns.

Oh and now I'm doing a homeopathy practitioners course- which will take years.

mum2toby · 05/05/2003 20:23

WOW Jimjams!! You put me to shame!! I don't think I've done anything to do with my degree since I graduated apart from offer people advice about problems with their gold fish!!
Maybe I could set up a web site.

GillW · 05/05/2003 20:40

I'm an IT bod - mostly doing internet/intranet admin (and a bit of design/development too), although I also do just about anything else which could loosely come under the heading of intranet/internet - which includes being the "internet police" for the part of the company I work in. At least that means that I can make sure mumsnet isn't on the banned list!

megg · 05/05/2003 20:44

I'm a legal secretary. I'm looking at doing some courses to become a conveyancer (very boring). I was due to start training before I fell pg so maybe I'll take it up again.

miggy · 05/05/2003 20:47

Im a vet. Best bit of my job is that I set up my own practice a year before had DS1 so now can pretty much dictate my working hours and just do 3 days but am home for afternoon school pickups in the middle. Worst bit is working with people and animals all day!

mum2toby · 05/05/2003 20:48

GillW... you could be very useful!

Is there a secret to not gettnig caught at work? I'm very worried about the amount of time I spend on Mumsnet if they ever check the network....

Jimjams · 05/05/2003 20:49

ahh but m2t all the sensible people who steered clear of sticking with Biology now earn a fortune!

I don't really teach much bio for channel 4 these days. I'm in the chat room- personally I like history question athough often I seem to be talking to teenagers about their boyfriends!
