The Health Care Professionals' Lounge: if you've had a bad day, are sick of your job and need to vent, the lounge is open!

On another thread, a few of us who work as health care providers (of any sort) were talking about having days at work that make a career as a waitress or grocery cashier sound very appealing... so, patterned on the One-Child Tea Room (which, btw, is open to anyone regardless of how many children you may have), here is The Health Care Professionals' Lounge.

Being something of a Room of Requirement, The Lounge has squashy sofas, a bar stocked with booze of all kinds, an Aga for tea, coffee or hot choc, and a pantry/ fridge for nibblies or full meals. Calories don't count here, neither does trans-fat, or food allergies, and there are no hangovers the next day.

Come on in and relax. There is only one rule here: no fisticuffs. We are here to vent and talk about the assorted difficulties of our jobs. If you're a patient, please remember that we give large amounts of our time and of ourselves to health care, and work within the limitations and the frustrations of the health care system (wherever we may live). Our jobs are rewarding but also exhausting, and we frequently question not only the system but also ourselves. If you've received bad care, please speak to the person responsible, or start another thread - this is not the place for it. We're here with our hair down (or up in curlers, or slathered in a masque) and our feet up. If necessary, we will borrow Mellors from the Tea Room to have trouble-makers firmly and politely ejected.

Cheers!

That's just crap lula. Can you challenge their stupid appraisal of you at all? Or is this the sort of thing you just have to grit your teeth and put up with?

To be honest Jacsmama, we are coming bac to the Uk in Feb, so really can't be bothered. I work two nights, one with a like minded person who can see that I have loads of experience, like 14yrs in emergency and one who doesn't, so it is only one night out of two.

My biggest quandry is whether to do my midwifery training when I get back to the uk. I have always wanted to do it and I know I would really enjoy it. I just feel a bit lost in career land at the moment !!

Jacksmama · 16/06/2009 01:16

Maybe you should talk to treedelivery about it - she's a midwife and can probably give you good advice and insight.
At least you know that your current situation isn't forever... I find it a lot easier to put up with idiots if I know there's a time limit.
Here, have some more wine!

lula, I doubt it's any consolation to you but we have the same situation in the UK a lot of the time too - I have worked with biomedical scientists of both the Australian and South African persuasion, and neither of them were allowed to operate at the level to which they were trained in their homeland, without extensive "retraining" here.

Personally I think there is a bit of tit for tatting going on - not sure who started it but I know it exists - we don't accept Aussie/NZ/SA quals (and possibly not Canadian either) in BioMed Science, and they all don't accept UK quals (except NZ who are a bit short on qualified BMS so seem to fall over themselves to get one in).

Or at least that was the situation 9 years ago when I last worked in a hospital lab!

If you want to do the MW training, and have always wanted to do it, how much will you regret it if you DON'T do it? And what's stopping you from doing it?

Ok, further research has shown that the uni in Leeds where we live, doesn't do the short 18mth course for registered nurses and the nearest one is not feasable to travel too.
As for qualifications, they are all accepted but they are just pig headed. I do have an option to change a shift to another night that the nice nurse works, so I just need the nursery to be able to change days for me.

I had a better night at work last night so that improved my mood, although dd's were grumpy today and I smashed my favourite cup . Now drinking the white variety and watching masterchief australia, which she whispers is better than the uk one !!
