Our baby died due to failings in NHS care. Any mumsnet troops out there willing and able to help me force change?

One of our healthy, term twins died recently due to total mismanagement of care caused primarily by understaffing. I have posted at length about this on 'Miscarriage and Bereavement'.

I would now like to start a campaign to raise awareness of the chronic understaffing in midwifery services in London and surrounding areas where the cost of living is high.

In particular, I would like the whole issue of London and Outer London Weighting to be urgently reviewed. It seems insane that hospitals are shelling out millions to pay for agency midwives and nurses when the logical course of action would be to substantially increase the allowance paid to staff working in areas where property prices/rents are higher. This would hopefully increase recruitment and retention of staff. In addition, nurse/midwives homes which have been sold off to private developers need to be replaced so that student midwives/nurses can afford to train and live in these areas.

Anyone out there prepared to help me with some research? We are prepared to use our own tragic case to highlight the issue in the national media.

If our son's death means that you and your unborn baby are safe during labour then his death will have not been in vain.

Hi all, sorry I've been a bit absent on this one, RL is getting in the way, but I will get around to phoning the 3 hospitals I have local to me, to get figures next week....
The march sounds like a really good idea, I certainly would attend, even tho its quite distance from up here in Derbyshire!
Big Hugs to Jangus re tomorrow.

Hello all

Just back from a night out in RL. A few too many wines, but don't worry ,I've expressed.

I'm super duper tired and can't take it all in right now but just wanted to say I'm here and i'm still in etc.

I live in Pinner so my local hospital is Northwick Park (I won't be going there). N.P has been in news just a couple of weeks ago for having a terrible maternity department and for losing a record number of mothers in childbirth. The woman highlighted had bled to death

Anyway, I work in PR so have contacts at TV, radio, national newspapers, national consumer mags etc and would obviously be more than happy to contact press with info / feature indeas, facts and figures etc. They do need things laid out on a plate and made easy but once they bite that's it.

I'll also join you on any march, and do anything else you need inc brainstorming for new ideas, etc, etc.

Thomcat · 06/05/2005 00:11

God, is that the time
Bubbles glad you had a good night out.

jangus · 06/05/2005 21:42

Bubble... hope things are going well for you.
I'm wrecked. I'm not going to call you tonight, instead I will give you a call tomorrow or on Sunday evening... On top of everything else we are having to find a new house to buy and I am hating every moment of it.
I'm looking forward to telling you what happened with the doctor.
TTFN xx

bub - an example of an Early Day Motion and campaign 'wrapping' can be seen regarding cloth nappies here on the Women's Environmental Network (bottom of page)... something to think about...

Spacecadet · 07/05/2005 17:30

Hi Bubble et al,
Just to let you know we've contacted the Guardian about this and they're discussing internally the possibility of running something. We'll let you know as and when they get back to us.

KathH · 09/05/2005 21:08

Bubble - will do anything i can to help. I'm in Leicester and from my experience we are chronically shortstaffed too - with ds1 the midwife had to attend to another lady in labour just as ds1 made an appearance with cord round his neck and dh had to "catch" him and then shout blue murder. With ds2 they were so short staffed they sent me home and I ended up having ds2 on the bathroom floor. I've followed your posts and think you are a great lady trying to change things and as said anything at all you need doing i will try to help. You may not realise this from my post but am a secretary so even its going something like typing then let me know.

Just bumping up for you

Spacecadet · 12/05/2005 12:11

bump, sorry not much use at coming up with ideas at the mo, but bumping for you anyway.

BROWNY · 14/05/2005 13:30

Just wanted to bump it up for you

Blondeinlondon · 15/05/2005 22:51

Dear Bubble, I would be very happy to help.

I am writing to my hospital and MP to complain about staffing levels - I had a "normal" delivery and a healthy baby at St George's but there were 4 women in labour to every midwife and my baby was delivered by a student midwife on her own.

Aftercare in the community is also severely stretched and NHS trusts are not meeting the legal requirement of new mothers seeing a midwife for the 10 days after delivery.

I would urge all mumsnetters to complain where appropriate - without letters of complaint they will do nothing to address staffing issues

Let me know what I can do to help

hunkermunker · 21/05/2005 20:54

Would the King's Fund be able to help with this at all?

hunkermunker · 21/05/2005 20:56

Sorry, Bubble - just realised it might be a shock to suddenly see this thread in active convos.

bubble99 · 21/05/2005 21:13

S'okay HM XX

hunkermunker · 21/05/2005 21:15

I just suddenly thought of The King's Fund the other day and wondered if they'd be able to help at all - not sure if they're the right people, but wouldn't hurt to ask.

How is the campaign coming along? You know I'll do anything you want, don't you? xxxxxxxx

hunkermunker · 21/05/2005 21:16

Have to get back to work now, but will check in on the thread later if I get a mo

marmar · 21/05/2005 22:03

I know im new but i understand whot you must being going though i had a still birth 5 years ago i havent read all the thread but if you need me to do any thing just say

Posey · 21/05/2005 22:23

Bubble99 - I have kept in touch with your postings and will help if I can. I haven't time to read all of this thread just now so may repeat what someone has said. But as a former nurse, and living in London, something that might have helped me stay in the NHS after children would have been more chance of part time or flexible working hours. For me, it was either leave or continue with the same hours including night shifts. I couldn't do it. Who would look after my kids. So the NHS lost a highly skilled member of staff and yet another vacancy had to be filled, or covered by the already overstretched team of nurses.

bubble99 · 21/05/2005 22:55

Thanks all. Will check in tomorrow when my head is a bit clearer.
