When you got married, what was your something BORROWED?

My sister is getting married in two weeks' time and needs something borrowed. She has got all the stuff she needs for her wedding now, has the garter which would sometimes be something borrowed. I think I had a pretty handkerchief or something which someone gave me on my wedding day. We just can't think of anything for her.
What did you BORROW for your special day?

Why not do it? It's fun. It's not as though I thought that the sky would fall in if I didn't. My Mum had great fun with it too, she lent me a something old which had sentimental value for her.

BrendaAndEddie · 29/04/2009 10:50

but you are really THINKING about it!!! its stupid superstition and lord knows we all need LESS of that in our lives.

JulesJules · 29/04/2009 10:51

Yes, why not? It's a quaint old fashioned tradition - like marriage

BrendaAndEddie · 29/04/2009 10:52

When i picked up my dress the woman said" oh i have sewed in a blue ribbon"

i thought " my god I am 26 and she is treating me like a moron"

but nodded and thanked.

nutty

MrsTittleMouse · 29/04/2009 10:55

Hm, you see I am a very boring sensible person, I used to work in a very logical profession (pre-children) and I have a lot of issues with things like astrology and homeopathy. But this was something that took almost no time, was a bonding thing with my Mum, was flattering to my friend (and she had nicer jewellery than I did ) and I knew that it had no bearing at all on the wedding or marriage.

BrendaAndEddie · 29/04/2009 10:56

well you are allowed then mousy

MrsGokWan · 29/04/2009 10:57

My mothers pearls, which she inherited from her grandmother, who had them from her mother, who got them from her mother for her wedding day. Was lovely to feel the connection with my relations.

BrendaAndEddie · 29/04/2009 10:58

but it was a piece of jewellery

there was NO connection

you lot make it all up!

Sparkler · 29/04/2009 10:59

my tiara - had it on loan from a jewellers, as saw it and loved it but couldn't justify the cost.

Nolda · 29/04/2009 11:00

Oh dear MrsGokWan, did you not know that pearls bring tears? That's why I had to borrow diamond necklace!

BrendaAndEddie · 29/04/2009 11:01

"pearls bring tears"

NO THEY DONT!!!!
Honestly. Youll be telling me that red sky at night means there is a joyous sheperd somewhere.

JulesJules · 29/04/2009 11:02

Yes, me too MrsTittleMouse. Am v boring and sensible. I'm sure most people see this as a sweet tradition, not a superstition.

Don't be so patronising, Brenda

PestoSunshineMonster · 29/04/2009 11:03

A pearl necklace belonging to a friend.

TakeLovingChances · 29/04/2009 11:03

I don't believe in all this marriage symbolism/tradition of things you 'must' wear etc. But my mum was really into it when I got married so:

Something old: old hairclips
Something new: everything else!
Something borrowed: I borrowed a veil from the sister of a work colleague - I REFUSED to pay the rip-off prices wedding shops charge for a piece of lace!
Something blue - my bridesmaids wore blue dresses, and I had a blue ribbon wrapped around my flowers.

BrendaAndEddie · 29/04/2009 11:03

I am not patronising you - you are doing it yourselves - utter idoicy.

do you watch out for Magpies and hoof outta the way of black cats?
do you eat mussels when there isnt an r in the month?

tinylittlekittens · 29/04/2009 11:05

I had an old penny sewn into the back of my knickers. It stopped my great grandfather being killed in the Boer War when it intercepted musket fire, so it was very precious to me.

Or something.

BrendaAndEddie · 29/04/2009 11:05

you had MONEY IN YOUR CACKS? ?!

silverfrog · 29/04/2009 11:05

actually, thinking about it, that's not right. was in jelwellers collecting rings a couple of days before the wedding, adn they'd just got the tiara.

they offered it to me if I wanted it, I thought about it for a coule of minutes and realised that,as always. i'd not thought about what to do with my hair (did have a hairdresser booked, but not discussed what to do etc) so thought "might as well, it's quite nice"

think my bridesmaids sorted the rest of it out - had blue nailvarnish on my toes (borrowed form bridesmaids), my mum's cross as old (was laways going to wear it, bt made my bridesmaids happy to count it as "old") and lovely bracelet form dh as "new"

tinylittlekittens · 29/04/2009 11:06

I usually carry a tenner in my pants - is that odd?

But this time I felt the need to be close to an old man I'd never met as I married a younger man I'd already been intimate with.

BrendaAndEddie · 29/04/2009 11:07

ROAR

ok new thread on money

BrendaAndEddie · 29/04/2009 11:08

pants

Tommy · 29/04/2009 11:09

I borrowed my Mum's gold watch. I only had a very cheap one with a brown leather strap which didn't really "go". I knew I would ant to keep a check in the time during the day as well!

BrendaandEddie - so cynical - it's just a bit of fun!

fizzpops · 29/04/2009 11:12

I borrowed a little bag from my Mum to carry round after the ceremony. I was not particularly traditional though so didn't mind that it wasn't really part of my outfit. My mum held it for me through the ceremony so it was there!

BrendaAndEddie · 29/04/2009 11:12

My aunt have my sister the NAFFEST decorated wooden spoon thing to hold. SHe hated it.
