Apart from pat self on back?

I am thinking of retraining but no idea about jobs. Those are the things I'm considering studying - what REAL ACTUAL JOBS might I get with a postgrad MA/PHD in them?

I mean ones that pay money. Any money. But must be money.

Thanks dearies.

Noooooo. It's not too late. Seriously not too late. Have several friends who retrained in their 30s and 40s. One became a barrister at 49!

But it is expensive ...

no, not deflating LG - my 'systematic and analytical' was after the x post!

Ah. If expensive, no can do, Quattro - though I really appreciate the encouragement.

I suspect if I was passionate enough I would have made it happen already. Also, I have seen the difficulties up close - one of my bf's is barrister too (trained 'late' at 27.)

lol LG. Christ, it's 10 past 12! Goodnight everyone - and thank you. v much.

Quattro you weren't at King's were you?

OP posts:
Quattrocento · 16/04/2009 00:17

No, very close though ... UCL.

a bit more info if you are interested

Also a friend of mine qualified through being a Magistrate's Court Clerk. I don't know if they do this any more but I could find out. Basically you get paid as you go along and some places do (or used to) enable the court clerks to qualify through part-time courses.

Seriously happy to do a proper recce if that is of any interest whatsoever.

SausageRoleModel · 16/04/2009 00:19

onebat I tried to email you but clearly got the wrong addie (unless you ignored me - can you drop me a line at therefinery - at - gmail - dot - com please? (obv, no spaces or dashes)....

I am liking your list (as distilled by quattrocentro). Its a bit spookily like mine (in fact I think I might be you in a parallel universe) but my list comes in reverse order (I am planning to set up a company instead of return to freelancing after SMP runs out) and do not include law (I know too many lawyers who hate what they do - I am with Leningrad on that) or photography (although I harbour a secret desire to become a new media visual artist). I still think a "portfolio" careeer, with a bit of academic teaching and research combined with perhaps freelance writing/journalism could suit you well. With your contacts, perhaps you could even become a TV commentator once you had established your research?

onebatmother · 16/04/2009 00:24

AAArgh so sorry SRM - I totally forgot (no follow through see)

Have done so now (though finally off to bed)

I am going to have a meeting next week with acquaintance to discover whether i could realistically do a bit of teaching without further training..

Am feeling quite excited on the one hand, and rather gloomy on the other..

OP posts:
onebatmother · 16/04/2009 00:31

Quattro that's v kind. Don't do serious recce, but it would be interesting to hear about the clerking thing.

I suspect it will be simply so that I can feel that I've properly considered it before finally discounting it, though, so please don't go to any lengths.

That sounds rather dismissive, but actually I'm finding the 'discounting' quite as liberating and revelatory as the other bit - hope that makes sense.

I can put you in my next short film onebat and then you'll be famous. Amongst at least 8 people. But you may have to do some serious, you know, casting couch flirtation.

Photography something I'd love to do. I've always thought that one could, [between one's exhibitions at the Tate Modern, obviously] do a roaring business in wedding photos, reportage style, decent wedding photographers seem so hard to come by. Oh yes that and actors' portraits, actors always needing nice shots done, and you can pray on their deep rooted anxiety by making them come back every year for more. London a perfect base for this.

[realises that the leap from considering being a criminal barrister to being a wedding photographer may be too great]

ruty · 16/04/2009 09:00

prey Gah.

Onebat, the more I read your posts the more I think you might be me!

This thread that you have started is so like lone I would start. I hope you find your niche in life.

(Can I be in your gang?)

The trouble is with changing career completely is it takes so much energy, when mostly it's easier to move sideways a bit and build on what one has already.

ruty · 16/04/2009 09:28

yes but you get to look pretty.

And take random offence at certain passengers and make their journey a misery. What's not to like?

Ballina · 16/04/2009 09:31

How about an adult ed certificate. I was discussing this with DP last night. You get a 2k bursery to do it and its funded. Afterwards you earn 2 quid an hour for teaching luddites to log on or those from 'underpriveledgfed' backgrouds to spell underprivledged. It's one way I'm going to fund my masters. hic

Ballina · 16/04/2009 09:34

lol. 20 quid an hour! Imagine a 2k bursery to train for a 2 quid an hour job. What a wanker.

But that reminds me (I'm a wanker) - you know when people ring Jeremy Vine to say people on benefits should be made to pick up litter? How does that make people who get paid for picking up litter feel?

Swedes · 16/04/2009 12:19

I've done the career change thing. I've had three successful careers.
