Wondered if anyone has any favourite websites (other than mumsnet of course!)

Through mumsnet I have found the strangely addictive flylady.net (a housekeeping site - don't ask and I can't even remember who recommended it!) and some excellent australian children's clothes websites - thanks to those mums netters too.

Is anyone else bored enough on a Saturday night to add to this thread?

www.netmums.com is a great website if you have a local branch in your area. It is full of local information, support and places to go with babies and young children.

I was hoping for more response to this thread because I, too, would love to know of good websites besides mumsnet.

For foodies, I've heard egullet.com is very good and very addictive.

I'm sort of interested in the mothers-who-think website, which is linked to Salon.com (a very well regarded American online magazine), but confess I just can't figure out how the chat threads work. "Talk" on mumsnet seem infinitely more user-friendly.

Are people here interested in blogs? There are some quite good ones about (am feeling lazy and it's too early in the morning, so am afraid you'll have to cut and paste!):

scaryduck.blogspot.com/ very funny - won an award for best british weblog.

loquacious.benhen.com/ again, very well written - has some very funny pieces about his kids. He's also wanting to reach a hit count of 50,000 for his one year blogaversary so click it lots

www.greenfairy.com/ another one that has won an award - not afraid to speak her mind though so probably best to avoid if you're easily offended

Can list more if people are interested but they're good starting points.

The Darwin awards site is good for a cruel laugh.

Georgina, just picked up this from your greenfairy:

The unintended poetry of Donald Rumsfeld.

The Unknown
As we know,
There are known knowns.
There are things we know we know.
We also know
There are known unknowns.
That is to say
We know there are some things
We do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns,
The ones we don't know
We don't know.

Dunno if it's genuine - certainly could be - it's brilliant! Do you think he actually does it on purpose?

GeorginaA · 07/04/2003 17:12

Lindy: blog is short for weblog which is a kind of online diary thing. Their subject matter can be political/current events commentary, just a collection of links that the owner finds interesting, wibble about their life, mixture of all three or none of the above.

There are some extremely good blogs about, and there are some really dire ones. However, I find them extremely addictive!

My favourite is televisionwithoutpity.com. If you're into ER, West Wing, CSI (all my fave shows) it provides a scene by scene account of each episode. Only for real addicts tho!

GeorginaA - thanks for the explanation, I thought it was some weird cult thing!

Tried to look at greenfairy at work today, but it was blocked. Have just satisfied my curiosity at home and am not sure why it was blocked at work. Any ideas?
More importantly, what am I going to give as an excuse when the security "police" demand an explanation as to why I was trying to access a blocked site (and believe me they will)

GeorginaA · 08/04/2003 07:53

What's your job, iota? I'm sure we can make up a plausible sounding excuse

janh · 08/04/2003 09:18

Maybe they confused it with greenpeace or something (you don't work for a nasty multinational chemical company do you?)

Bobbins · 08/04/2003 10:38

GeorginaA> I work with the scaryduck bloke. I can see him from my office just now. I think he might sneakily do it at work sometimes actually.

One of my favourites is; Things My Girlfriend and I Have Argued About

Somebody on here recommended it around Christmas.

Meid · 08/04/2003 10:45

www.yournotme.com is fun to find out how many other people have the same name as you in the UK.

I'm one of 428 but my DH is unique with no-one else having his name in the country.

emsiewill · 08/04/2003 11:10

my dh is unique, too. Not surprising really, as his mum made the name up (well, it does exist but with a different letter in the middle).

Meid · 08/04/2003 11:15

Thats the same as my DH's name. The name itself isn't made up but the spelling is really odd!

EmmaTMG · 08/04/2003 11:19

There are 12 of me on the name website but if I wasn't married I would have been unique.
I like this one.

soyabean · 08/04/2003 11:23

There are 3 of me; I'm quite surprised as both are relatively unuasual. My dh is 1 of 1, which doesnt surprise me as his is not an English name. But apparently my children 'do not exist'...So the database must be made up from records of adults? Anyone know how it works?

soyabean · 08/04/2003 11:24

I meant both parts of my name are unusual.

Meid · 08/04/2003 11:27

Soyabean, it is taken from the year 2000 electoral role.

iota · 08/04/2003 11:33

janh - yes I do, and you could be right
