Trolls, where are they now and which ones do you remember?

Obviously JF/W&R can be classed as a troll.

There are one or two others that I remember, such as one thread that was clearly started by a young male with nothing better to do except try to stir things up on here, along the lines of "I'm a sahm with a ?yr old ds, I like girls and want to meet some, but I don't know how to tell my husband". The whole tone of the post, spellig mistakes and everything just cried out TROLL!! I'm not sure anyone fell for this one and actually replied.

Which other ones can any of you remember?

Hunkermunker - difficult when post is 'I've lost two babies to SIDs and think these mattress protectors would have saved their lives' - you don't exactly feel like getting the Troll basher out...

For everyone's info, I googled this a lot and there was a SIDs charity by a similar name to one I think that person was associated to which had accounting irregularities and closed down. If her story is real, I apologise now, but I personally think promoting wrapping mattresses in plastic is a dangerous practice...

Mud - I haven't read through all of these posts but I felt compelled to post. How on earth can you justify calling someone a troll when you have no proof whatsoever???
It saddens me that someone who I feel is genuine and comes on here for some serious advice has to contend with this kind of school ground behaviour.
Have you no compassion and feel safe hiding behind a computer screen???
I just find it very sad indeed that nobody gets the benefit of the doubt, especially when the subject is so sensitive. If (which I think she is) this person is genuine how on earth do you think they are going to feel reading this???

mummytosteven · 08/04/2005 18:20

agree with Fio2/Hula that if you have concerns a poster is a troll, you should contact MN, rather than discuss it even on a separate thread.

Gwenick · 08/04/2005 18:21

Surely MN should then put a piece on the introduction for the 'talk' section saying that these are not the views of MN - and therefore taking away the chance of legal action against them?

Mud · 08/04/2005 18:26

Um, what kind of proof do you ever get about trolls though?

This is the nature of the internet and online communities I'm afraid. You take people at face value and sometimes things in some posts don't ring true. A lot of the time it is because they post situations that are at the extreme of human emotions to elicit support and care. That can be the nature of many troll posts which is a sad indicator of some people's need for attention.

I have a lot of time for many people on mumsnet from my lurking days, you included blossomhill.

I'm not hiding behind a computer screen. I AM behind one, so are you, so is everyone. I find that quite a silly thing to say.

There are things in my life I could post about to elicit that kind of support / emotional outpouring but I choose not to because this is one place I can escape well-meant sympathy which is mainly quite galling and upsetting. Maybe that colours my perception, maybe not. Maybe I'm just a bitch

lou33 · 08/04/2005 18:30

Not sure if that would take it away though Gwen, as it may not be the view of mn, but they are the ones allowing it to be displayed, so they may still have some liability perhaps?

Fio2 · 08/04/2005 18:30

if you dont like them or suspect they are not genuine, you could always use your self control and not post what i do object to is people being 'named' when no-one has proof. i find it distasteful that someone who has said they are dying is pigeonholed. i lived whith a chronically ill person all my life, i know how they behave. i also know how grief affects you and makes you feel. Your memory isnt there. She could have posted that yesterday and just forgot. Whether she was genuine or a troll, the thread actually would not have caused harm. it was a useful thread anyway to anyone who may have come accross it

Mud · 08/04/2005 18:33

I agree it was a useful thread, that's what I said in all my posts. I disagree with your whole objection to naming though as this was a first time post (maybe a regular changing name, maybe not) and so there was no online identity built up. This is a separate thread and if there is truth there it is unlikely that person would be looking in this kind of thread at the moment, and it will have dropped off the board in a few hours.

mud- someone's linked to this thread though. For all we know the poster may have forgotten their password or their pc could have blown up. There could be a multitude of reasons. Or they could be finding it difficult to cope with the enormity of the situation but they could be popping back to read the thread.

If that's the case then they'll find this thread because of the link.

I do think that we should be careful about naming people when nothing's been proved, even though it's internet aliases that we're naming. We should support each other.

serenity · 08/04/2005 18:42

I think it's very unfair to jump down Mud's throat about this. She made one comment on this thread, which other people then agreed with. She didn't post on the original thread, and as has ready been mentioned if NIght is genuine she would hardly have been going to read this thread after checking her own.

Sorry Mud, I'm sure you don't need defending, but it annoys me when MN does this thing of picking on one poster, heaping all sorts of blame on them. You just posted something an awful lot of people were obviously thinking.

tamum · 08/04/2005 18:43

Good post, serenity. I honestly don't think any harm would have been done if it had stayed on this thread.

Pixiefish - read my posts from 5:39:58 up

Thanks serenity, that's appreciated.

Fio2 · 08/04/2005 18:45

I have never mentioned Mud in any of my posts. Not that i think i need to defend myself

pixiefish · 08/04/2005 18:47

Sorry mud- my post wasn't totally clear. The only reference to you was an answer to your comment:

'This is a separate thread and if there is truth there it is unlikely that person would be looking in this kind of thread at the moment, and it will have dropped off the board in a few hours.'

saying that someone had posted a link to this thread. I wasn't having a go at anyone- should have punctuated better.

The rest of my post was a general answer to lots of posters.

Mud · 08/04/2005 18:48

in case nobody's noticed, I have a very big mouth hence there is plenty of space down in my throat - jump on in

Mud · 08/04/2005 18:49

now if this was a differnt site that particular statement could have had a whole other pervy explanation

pixiefish · 08/04/2005 18:52

Justine (mumsnet) · 08/04/2005 18:57

Maybe it's time to draw attention to mumsnet's troll policy . We think it's wise to delete the comments on the other thread linking to here. We hope you agree. Do let us know if not.

Mud · 08/04/2005 18:58

YES TOTALLY AGREE

glad the link on the other thread will be deleted.

I am actually really glad and relieved that Night hasn't posted again. I hope she keeps off the threads. If she has just months to live, how awful if she spent that precious time on mumsnet or any other discussin forum.

Didn't FairyFly once get herself banned in the middle of the night after some accidental posting and the late-shift MN tech team thught she was a troll?
