I have seen a few woman walking around with very long hair (obviously uncut), and they usually have a small headscarf on thats more like a headband with a piece of fabric on it. And they are always in skirts/dresses. If they have any female children with them, they are also have long hair etc.

I am totally nosy but I was wondering if this was a denomination of a religion? Or a certain lifestyle choice?

Smurfgirl, I'm so glad you started this thread.

DS1 has alittle boy in his class who belongs to this relegion and his mum refuse a party invite last year becuase "we don't mix with other people or eat with anyone out side the faith" she was really embarrassed about it TBH.

I have been trying to biuld up the courage to ask her the name of it but couldn't think of the right words without it sounding noisy. She's a lovely lovely woman.

We've got some in our village too. Only one family that I know of though.

Linnet · 07/04/2005 22:38

Bretherns

We have them in our city. All the women/girls wear long denim skirts, always Denim never any other kind.

collision · 07/04/2005 22:43

They are not allowed to watch TV or do computers and they do not eat with other people so will usually go home for lunch.

The women NEVER cut their hair or wear makeup either....this is to do with a scripture about the braiding of the hair etc and so they tie it back with a scarf.

They have nothing to do with 'outsiders' either and so often marry close family members and they are often shouting outside Sainsburys in North Finchley with the Bible.

JoolsToo · 07/04/2005 22:45

don't they only live in detached houses too?

collision · 07/04/2005 22:46

I dont think so......or maybe it just the richer ones do!!

QueenEagle · 07/04/2005 22:46

I have a man who does various electrical, plumbing jobs for me who is a friend of my dad's. His family is one of several who live near me and their children go to my ds's school. They go home at lunch times, don't take part on daily assemblies or mix with other kids outside of their faith. The guy who does odd jobs for me is lovely. They shy away from certain things however - no telly or computers at home and my odd-job man only concedes to having a mobile phone because of his work.

Evesmama · 08/04/2005 08:21

dior!!! you saw them in the zoo!!!

snafu · 08/04/2005 08:30

Plymouth Brethren - there are loads in my area, in fact our next-door neightbours are all Brethren. My dad also works for a company run by a family of Brethren - he is the only employee not of the faith.

Our next-door neighbours are absolutely lovely and very friendly - up to a point - they will always chat over the fence, say hello if we see them in the village etc but we would never be invited in and they would never come to us. At work, my dad cannot have a cup of coffee, etc with any of his colleagues as they are not allowed to 'break bread' with non-believers - he also has a separate office. The office has no fax, computers and only two phones. It's a bit lonely for him, poor old dad!

suzywong · 08/04/2005 09:11

They sound similar to the Mennonites (sp?)
they have and HQ in Highgate

Fio2 · 08/04/2005 09:15

I am sure the family we used to live by had a computer

all I can remember was that their front room was so untidy with a piano in They all seemed okay though, friendly etc. i felt sorry for one of the daughters though when he dad started preaching outside body shop over the war in irag, she looked so sad and embarassed. each to their own though

I know Plymouth brethren. They are harmless, lovely, fun people that stick to what the bible says, and that's why people are against them.

Stupid to be against them really. They only do what the bible teaches Smile and that's what people don't get.

TheSpottedZebra · 15/10/2014 18:40
