Help finding a kilt

I'm after some help! Me and my beloved are getting married in June and our small bundle of joy will be 16 months old at that time. His Daddy will be wearing a kilt and we'd like him to wear one as well. Does anyone know of a kilt hire place in Edinburgh which hires kilts for children that small?? (smile)

Don't know of any specifically, but most kilt hire places do teeny weeny kilts too. Don't think you'll have much problem, just phone a few. Don't forget to get a pair of shorts ot go over his nappy!

lindenlass · 26/01/2009 16:12

Slaters do kilts for children I think - they're a scottish company so I would assume they've got a branch in Edinburgh. They're a really fantastic company.

Here

SaltireOShanter · 26/01/2009 16:18

OOh they do kilt hire. I wonder if the Bsnistoke one does. DH wants a kilt for a friends wedding in Derbyshire in march. he actually wants the Hearts tartan (the groom is a Hibs fan) and I said there is no way he would get a Jambos tartan in England.

lindenlass · 26/01/2009 16:18

Yes, they all do I think

We got DS1 a kilt made for our wedding - he was 10mo at the time and we wanted him to have the family tartan so he matched his daddy but unfortunately it is not one of the 'standard' ones. It cost about £65 and we got it from Geoffrey Tailor on the Royal Mile. Was a bit about the cost but he looked so cute on the day it was worth every penny!

Tootlesmummy · 27/01/2009 07:45

Was it £65 just for the kilt or did that include all the add ons? if they're on top it starts to rack up in costs for an outfit that they'll only probably wear once! Do they hire kilts for toddlers that small do you know?

OP posts:
peedie · 27/01/2009 15:10

It was £65ish for the kilt alone. My mum knitted him a wee arran jumper and we got a teeny sporran from one of the 'tartan' shops on the Royal Mile for about £15. I got him a pair of soft black shoes and made him some teeny flashes for his socks out of elastic and green ribbon.

I didn't find anyone who rented outfits this small but to be honest I didn't look too hard as I knew no-one would have the tartan I wanted.

DD (6mo) wore the kilt this weekend to a Burns supper so at least we've had two wears out of it now......

Tootlesmummy · 27/01/2009 20:00

Good news, Slaters have confirmed that they do small kilts and all the bits for hire for Ghillie shirt outfits from £39 and Prince Charlie outfits from £45.
The smallest size kilt they do is an 18" waist 10" length.
Thanks for the help

no problem

conkertree · 27/01/2009 21:25

Hi - thanks to Boffinmum for mentioning my wee business - I'd be happy to speak to you about a baby kilt if you are interested, having seen the website. I need to post a picture on there of a baby kilt cause the one on there was for a 4 year old. The baby ones are attached to a vest which solves the problem of babies not really having hips .

£65 for a baby kilt sounds a bit steep to me - particularly as a lot of high street shops dont tend to hand sew all of the kilt, but maybe that one was a difficult tartan to get hold of.

I'd also consider doing baby kilt hire if there was a market for it, so let me know if that would be of more interest to you.

Anyway, email me at [email protected] if you want more information.

conkertree · 27/01/2009 21:35

ah - didnt update the thread since reading it earlier - i see you're going with Slaters.

If you want more details anyway from me before making your decision, let me jnow - as I say - I would consider doing kilt hire, and can get all the accessories too for a wee outfit.

conkertree · 27/01/2009 21:40

ok not trying to beg for a sale - but i did just hold up 10 inches on my tape measure and my ds is 17 months (and ok he is on the small side) but it may be quite long for a 16 month old - maybe measure your ds tomorrow to see roughly what length he is from waist (as far as there is one) to mid knee, and see whether he'd have to grow a fair bit to fit that - but I dont have ds in front of me either so would need to hold that up against him to check size too.

Tootlesmummy · 28/01/2009 08:51

Thanks for the update, not sure re Slaters, I just don't think I could justify spending £100's on a full outfit for DS when he'll only wear it once or twice before he grows out of it!
I was looking for Prince Charlie or Argyll outfit for DS.

Conkertree - do you do the McLeod yellow tartan?

conkertree · 28/01/2009 10:21

www.lochcarron.com/reiver/macleod_dress_modern.html

this one geordieminx? Basically as I am fairly new in business, I am building up a stock of tartans, so that if people want a specific one, I will buy in a bit more than I need for that customer's kilt, and then will have some to make extra baby kilts with, for people who dont really mind what tartan it is.

So yes I could do that tartan.

Tottlesmummy - one option could be to buy the kilt outright, eg the £35, then hire the rest. Or one thing I was thinking is that since they are attached to vests, and that is the bit that's likely to get dirty, I could do hire on the basis that the vest can come back in any state you like, as long as the kilt is fine, and then just reattach it to a new vest for the next hire.

I can investigate prince charlie and argyll jackets with my supplier, and then come up with a hire price if you like? I know I can get small sporrans, and socks, and that with the jacket would probably be enough, if you could get your own shoes?

In the past, I have just put ds in the kilt with a wee waistcoat over it, as I think for their size, a vest, shirt and jacket might end up being quite bulky - but its all worth a go. As I say, the business is fairly new, so although the kilt side of things is established, the full outfits for this size are still slightly at the trial stage - lucky I have a 17 month old of my own who is (reasonably) happy to be my model .
