Grrr! ASDA have bleached my NEW buggy!!

BadgerBadger · 01/04/2005 12:54

DH went shopping two nights ago, when he got home we found the bleach he'd bought had leaked (it was in a seperate bag).

Today I got my NEW £80 buggy out of the boot to use to find that it has bleach stains all over the footmuff, and the seat and seat back .

ASDA wont take liability, should they? What do you think? They said if they cap was loose at the time of purchase, it couldn't be considered their fault as a child may have opened it (so much for child proof cap!) in store, therefore, not their problem!!

Snugs, I'll have to change my name again at this rate!

Liz, they don't have seals, just 'child proof' lids. I have noticed that bleach on the label of the bottle gives an indication that it has leaked.

TBH, it hadn't crossed my mind to approach them until a friend suggested to, so, any reimbursement would be a bonus, IYSWIM. I'm more irritated that they just won't admit it .

I do know what you mean LIZS but if I had noticed the damage whilst unpacking the shopping in my own kitchen, then I would still have given it a go.

ZimmerHippyWitch · 01/04/2005 13:40

Change your name? Didn't know you could do that

Will hopefully be back on messenger soon (bloody computers!) so we can catch up )

milge · 01/04/2005 13:40

i'd take some digital photos and email them to HO customer services - plus complain about dismissive attitude of shop staff, should get you some attention. Not sure who the fault lies with, but if you try, the worst that can happen is that they say"computer says no"

cashier trainings makes u check the lids on bottles especially bleach. however if the buggy wasnt in store at tha time of purchase, then i dont think they can be held liabal.

you might get somethign as agood will gesture. but tbh the damage is comsmetic, and doesnt affect the use of the buggy IYKWIM.

lunavix · 01/04/2005 13:50

I'd personally complain loudly till they paid for your new buggy.

I think it's their fault tbh. And I've worked in a few different stores (including supermarkets) and at the end of the day the customer that complains gets what they want. As long as they don't shout or get rude!

anchovies · 01/04/2005 13:51

I am almost certain that they have a legal responsibility. A similar thing happened to me in Morrisons with bleach on my clothes and (eventually) their solicitors sent a cheque for compensation and I had to sign to say that I was happy with this and wouldn't be taking any further legal action against them.

Demented · 01/04/2005 13:54

IMO ASDA should reimburse you for the cost of the buggy. It wouldn't occur to me to check lids on bottles of bleach before buying them but I will now. It would be normal practise for a parent to load their shopping into the boot of their car which also contains a buggy and if the bleach was leaking then the buggy will be damaged. Bleach damage is horrible and I certainly would not like to be forced to push a bleached buggy around.

On a slight tangent I recently got rid of my cleaner (who was very good at cleaning) but she didn't put the caps back on bottles of cleaning fluid's properly. The last straw was a bottle of bleach that when my DH picked it up to put it away the lid came off and bleach ended up all down his top. She didn't see that this was in any way her fault, she may not have put the lid of properly but as far as she was concerned the bleaching was my DH's fault. Interesting how different people see things.

Demented · 01/04/2005 13:56

I think ASDA should bear in mind that having to replace an £80 buggy is getting off lightly, leaking bleach could have caused a severe personal injury.

anchovies · 01/04/2005 13:59

Demented that is so true, that's the main reason that Morrison's were so concerned when I raised it with them, their solicitors were blatently scared when I pointed out my dh is a health and safety manager and enclosed the safety data sheet with my letter! Personal injury means much bigger claims than damage to property.

joash · 01/04/2005 14:27

Sorry, but agree with others. It's not ASDA's problem (aaarrrggghhh - I'm agreeing with ASDA). Been in the habit of checking all bottle tops before packing the shopping for years now, although some still manage to come loose.

kelb6180 · 01/04/2005 14:47

All items such as bleech,(hazardous) should have a child proof top.
My sugestion is to go back and speak to the manager, explain what had happened and say you are not happy.
Explain not only has it ruined your pram, which you are deeply annoyed about, there is a safty issue. Explain you are concerned that if the top is loose on the item of bleech you purchased then it may be on other items and it may be a risk to their other customers.
Tell them that you would like something to be done, & would expect some sort of compensation for the damage.
if the manager is not prepared to take any action tell them that the matter is not closed and you will take the matter further if need be. Ask for contact details of complaints department and also request his/her name. Also ask them the complaints procedure.

see also you could contact the makers of the bleech and explain what has hapened, and how the store will not do anything. they may not be happy as you are a valued costomer and compensate/???

just a thought... hope it helps

Threaten to write to your local paper.

hub2dee · 01/04/2005 18:31

One can reasonably expect that a bottle of bleach can be transported in safety, without leaking, and that subsequently it will require strong hands to open it and subsequent to that it should render bog sparkly clean.

Clearly bottle failed in holiday from supermarket prison to residential barracks. It leaked when it shouldn't have.

A personal meeting with the store manager would sort this, and failing that a decent letter to Head Office should do the trick...

Noticed labels routinely bleached on the shelves - is there a problem with their supplier ?
Nobody in my family interfered with it
Transported safely in boot, not by hand, so didn't kick it
Kids didn't pack / unpack it
Cashier failed to check security of lid (if true)
Luckily, bleached washed off dhs hands OK but he didn't realise it was bleach at first and it could have been all so nasty
And the buggy, Sirs, is a bargain at £80
And if you don't feel inclined to pay for a full replacement - which I can understand as it is still usable - let's settle at, say £40 vouchers to spend in your store which I've been shopping at since I was three and I've never had a problem and the staff are usually so attentive.

Spacecadet · 01/04/2005 20:04

I would get in touch with Asda customer services, a harzadous chemical like bleach should not leak.

LIZS · 01/04/2005 20:09

badgerbadger, have you been yet ?

handlemecarefully · 01/04/2005 20:14

Escalate it above and beyond the Store and contact their Regional Offices with your complaint. You will probably get a different outcome.

My vote is for their liability.

BadgerBadger · 01/04/2005 23:07

Thanks for you views on this. I didn't take it today, I thought I'd get my thoughts in order (as far as that's possible!) before I went in for a face to face.

I'll visit before contacting HO, that way if the manager is as complacent as the CS staff, I can add that into the mix .

Thanks for the prototype letters I'm almost looking forward to writing to them now!

As spacecadet said, a chemical just shouldn't leak! I still agree.

TheClaimCulture · 01/04/2005 23:19

Oh FGS

Shit happens, it could have been intact as DH left the store, one good bash in the boot, is all it would take.

I got up in a good mood today, as did Ds, I ended up having a terrible day, show me where to sign up to claim compensation.

charleypops · 01/04/2005 23:54

I was reimbursed for 6 nice bottles of wine which smashed all over the road when the cardboard carrier broke as I brought them out of the car boot from Tescos. I phoned to tell them what had happened and they just said bring back your receipt and we'll replace them. It was that easy. I'd saved the glass but they didn't want to see it. For all they know I could've been lying. I wasn't though.

I think you should definitely go for reimbursement. Good luck!

hub2dee · 02/04/2005 00:04

TCC: Here is where you sign up .

No pushing now.

BadgerBadger · 02/04/2005 01:47

TCC, I'm so sorry to hear your day turned into a tough one.

'Shit happens', as they say.

handlemecarefully · 03/04/2005 20:07

TCC,

What a thoroughly unpleasant person you are. One of the reasons I am toying with the idea of giving up on using 'Talk' in mumsnet.
