Right MNers. While it's not my favourite shop in the world and it's business strategy is probably a bit screwed up; I think it's going to be a sorry day if Woolies leaves the high street.

I have just been for a last-ditch supportive shop and strongly suggest you do the same if you can this week.

You could get some gift-wrap, chrimbo cards or bargainiferous toys, a lady-themed toolkit or a strange gimmicky household cleaning item. C'mon!

I love woollies I was in there today today and got some wrapping paper and stuff for DD's stocking.

Such an awful time for the staff to lose their jobs Hope it doesn't come to that...

EyeballsintheSky · 26/11/2008 22:20

There's a massive Woolies in Kingston, been there as long as I can remember. I will be devastated to see it go. And sympathy to anyone who works there. The situation is shite

NotanOtter · 26/11/2008 22:21

sorry but i loathe woolies

Pinkchampagne · 26/11/2008 22:25

My boys will be devastated if Wollies is no more - it's their favourite shop in the world!

I love Woolworth and so do the dss, in fact ds2's birthday treat was to go to the big Woolworth not too far from us and choose a toy - he couldn't believe his luck. We also have a normal sized Woolworth just round the corner and it is so convenient. I'm really going to miss it.

HappyandEiknowit · 26/11/2008 23:01

i love woolies

its such an awful situation when you look at the big picture (even if you break it down actually) so many people will lose their jobs right before christmas so many shoppers will lose a great store i have been a dedicated woolies fan since i was little and my mum and dad would take us there on boxing day to spend our xmas vouchers

i for one will be sad to see it go

xx ei xx

I will miss Woolies, it's been there forever!

I used to go there with my birthday money when I was little and take my son in if we have a spare few quid to get something, he loves it and he's only 2.

I feel sorry for the people working there and hope that somehow we can save the place.

This is the bad side to supermarkets I guess they sell everything under one roof and normally cheaper too might make a point of using the other local shops so that this doesn't ahppen to the little useful ones.

Will defo go in and grab Wall E for DS though he loves the advert so will get him DVD.

tonton · 27/11/2008 09:36

all xmas presents so far come from woolies!
Have just sent dh back in.

Save our woolies!!

tiredemma · 27/11/2008 09:43

This is really sad. If you asked me what one shop reminded me of my childhood I would say woolies.

I remember going there every Boxing day with vouchers that I had recieved for xmas.

ProfYaffle · 27/11/2008 09:49

I thought it was interesting what they said on the news today, apparently small Woolies in small towns do really well, it's the big city centre stores which are losing money.

That seems to reflect what's been said on here, those of us in small towns really value Woolies, but it's the city types who don't use them. I'm hoping that means the smaller ones will be saved.

Anyway, I'm off to visit ours now, it might be my last chance

Fimbo · 27/11/2008 09:52

Woolies was always the place to buy your flip flops from when a child. They were still bagged up and you had to hunt around for your size. I always used to buy the non-toe post ones.

Does anyone remember the Cafes??

We have a large one in a retail park that started off as BigW which does have a caff but its not like the ones they had in the 70's which were always upstairs.

mypandasgotcrabs · 27/11/2008 09:54

ProfYaffle, you've got it exactly right. The guy from Mintel on C4 news last night confirmed this too. Those of us who work in the smaller stores are likely to be ok.

Fimbo · 27/11/2008 09:54

There is also a small one in the next town up from my village. It's saved many a day with forgotten presents.

I think it will be a real shame if Woolies closes. There was one in Dublin when I was a child but it closed - I loved it. A real treat going there and having sausages and chips in the restaurant.

We always go to the one in Chester when visiting MIL and we were excited that there is one in Taunton where we are hoping to live in a few years.

Really sorry for all the staff. It does seem like the management lost sight of the ball really.

mypandasgotcrabs · 27/11/2008 10:21

Fio, I knew a few days ago that we'd be going into administration. The removal of gift vouchers/cards was prep for that. I haven't heard anything officially, but what's been filtered down is that it's likely the bigger stores will be the ones to go. Hopefully we'll both be ok.

mypandasgotcrabs · 27/11/2008 10:23

Plus, in my region a brand new store has recently been built. That opened a few weeks ago, I don't believe they'd have done that if the company was going to fold.

mamadiva · 27/11/2008 10:25

Ooh I'm not sure if the one in my area is a big one or not, it's quite a big store but in a small town centre... I don't know.

I'm going to go in later and grab a few wee bits n pieces from there anyway!
