What's wrong with Haribo sweets ??

I've noticed a few times on hear now, people saying things like the dredded Haribos ect.
I just wondered if it's because they're sweets or if they were particulally bad for children? I've always trusted Haribo as it's a very well known brand. If they are much worse than other brands, then I'll stop my daughter having them.
Could someone please let me know.

Nothing wrong with gelatin as long as you are not a vegetarian
"gelatin (also gelatine, from French gélatine) is a translucent, colourless, brittle, nearly tasteless solid substance, extracted from the collagen inside animals' skin and bones. It has been commonly used as a gelling agent in food, pharmaceutical, photography, and cosmetic manufacturing. Substances containing gelatin or functioning in a similar way are called gelatinous. Gelatin is an irreversibly hydrolyzed form of collagen. Gelatin is classified as a foodstuff and has E441 E number.

Gelatin is in bones and skin. Info here if you're interested.

They are the only sweets over the planet DS can have (VERRRRRY alergic child here). To be honest, I don't think that a healthy sweet does exist.

All have their pros and cons but are equally bad for the children, regardles of what we want to believe

mummyloveslucy · 01/11/2008 20:02

It sounds horrible, I'm not a vegiterian but I can see why vegiterians wouldn't want their children to have them.
I don't suppose I'd eat much if I really thought about what's in the food.
I do try to go for the no added ingredients etc.

You can get halal ones in ASDA

saw them and thought? what could be different?

thanks to gruesome detailed outline of what gelatin is, I now knwo why!!!

MeMySonAndI · 01/11/2008 20:08

Does anybody here eat Jelly or Sunday roasts? well that kind of jelly that forms over the liquids once the roast is cold is gelatine. Obviously, sweets come with other added rubish like plenty of sugar.

Most of us non vegetarians eat it anyway.

Lapsedrunner · 01/11/2008 20:36

mabanana · 01/11/2008 20:39

Haribo now has no artificial colours so OK with me.

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 01/11/2008 21:02

PicklePudding · 02/11/2008 15:57

Would have to agree with the vegetarian angle. Gelatine is a particularly GROSS form of meat, being all by-products and stuff, but is in a scary amount of kid food like Haribo (and all other gummy sweets), yogurt etc etc.

By the way, did you know that a lot of products which now advertise themselves as no artificial colourings use squashed beetles (cochinel red) as a colouring instead? The world is a scary place for vegetarian parents!

I can't take sweets/jelly etc off DD1, obviously, because it would be cruel (she's only 3 so wouldn't understand) so I HATE IT when Haribo gets handed out at pre-school.

MatNanPlus · 02/11/2008 16:02

giraffescantdancethetango · 02/11/2008 23:48

I am gutted they aren't veggie as they taste lovely, but every time I look at them I shudder now

Pawslikepaddington · 03/11/2008 00:07

I love Haribo, but have never bothered with checking for colourings etc as dd's sugar intake and hyper moments never seem to correspond, so am not the right person to answer this

Pawslikepaddington · 03/11/2008 00:10

No wonder I'm getting fat

Surely the Halal ones do have gelatine in, just from animals that have been killed according to the requirements for Halal status?

Gymnastme · 28/05/2016 10:43

it is animal balls and vagnias

flanjabelle · 28/05/2016 10:47

ZOMBIE THREAD.

Is there a particular reason you were looking for a thread to talk about animal balls and vaginas gymnast?

cdtaylornats · 31/05/2016 14:32

You can get halal Haribo in Tesco.

Their adverts are so annoying
