How do you say "a cup of tea"?

GRMUM · 02/03/2005 10:56

Hi, I am just writing my first assignment for my OU course. As an example of different ways of saying something I am using the phrase a cup of tea. So far I can think of :

A cup of tea
A cuppa tea
A cup of char
A quick brew

Anybody got any more? I am sure there must be other local ways of saying this. If you can also let me know the area its from that would be great! Thanks

mummytosteven · 02/03/2005 23:17

shall i just pop the kettle on (northern)

cornfield · 02/03/2005 23:18

do you fancy a brew, or a cuppa tea (am Yorkshire).

moondog · 02/03/2005 23:20

In (north) Wales, a lot of people say 'Do you want a panad?' (which is Welsh obviously, but has found its way into the everyday language of non Welsh speakers too.)

marthamoo · 02/03/2005 23:29

I say "do you want a cup of coffee?"...pause...pause..."oh...I've got tea too...somewhere...hang on...did buy some tea bags..."

Don't drink it, 'tis foul drink of the devil, and usually offer tea only to find the tea bags are yonks out of date.

pixiefish · 02/03/2005 23:36

I'd ask if you wanted a 'panad'- (live in Wales) and its an abbreviation of cwpaned which is a cupfull so cupfull abbreviated would be cuppa so i spose panad=cuppa

What did you do last year? I'm doing A103 and should at this moment be reading about Alfred Russell Wallace!

SleepyJess · 03/03/2005 18:35

Up North (lived there for 6 years until 2003) they call tea and/or coffee a 'brew'. When DH is being very northern (he is a northerner.. now in the south) he says 'Brew up, hotlips'! I and go swoon.. NOT!

Brew, North.

When I worked in Sheffield they used to ask who was 'mashing' tea.

I have also suffered with the islands/roundabouts thing - I once drove all round Derby in total confusion.

Someone I once worked with used to say "Do you want a wet?"

GRMUM · 04/03/2005 05:55

Lilibet I did DD100 last year. Really enjoyed that too. Have to say that, apart from being very interesting, I also found it quite easy- it was like reading about all the social changes that have occured during my lifetime. Is A103 the arts foundation course?

Yes, it's the Introduction to Humanities, very varied, loving some bits (French Revolution) hated others (Alfred Russell Wallace, which I should be doing at this very moment!)

HappyDaddy · 04/03/2005 14:38

Brew or cuppa splosh - Essex.

Mum always defines tea two ways:

Cows on strike? (too strong)
Fortnight (too weak)

Beansmum · 04/03/2005 14:47

I just say

or
shall I put the jug on?

Beansmum · 04/03/2005 14:48

I'm in scotland but not scottish, think jug is NZ and tea? just laziness

dinosaur · 04/03/2005 14:59

I had to check who instigated this thread as Melsy commented to me today on the phone that I said cup of tea like Brad Pitt in Meet Joe Black! Which I have not seen...
