Will dh's £90K car make us a target for crime?

idratherbeincognito · 07/09/2008 00:26

Have changed my name for this to avoid accusations of being ostentatious.

Dh has a £90K sports care. There is a waiting list of 12-18 months....

I hadn't considered this before but a friend has suggested that we step up our security at our house (we are semi rural - not many neighbours) eg CCTV, and our alarm should be linked to a rapid response security firm rather than a just a simple auditory alarm (as per now). He suggested that dh might be followed in his car and our house targetted (with car theft in mind). The miscreants then might, seeing that our house looks 'promising', be tempted to break in rather than just filch the vehicle.

Has he watched to many police dramas or does he have a point?

(Feeling all sort of nervous and vulnerable atm, not helped by a murder in the village yesterday - aggravated burglary)

I'd park it in a garage that was not attached to the house, so that if anyone was intent on stealing it they wouldn't come near the house. I'd be tempted to leave the car keys in the garage, but make sure the garage was like Fort Knox. I'd ensure that DH takes some responsibility for making you all a target by sorting out good security pronto. And there's no way I'd drive it myself for fear of carjacking. Sorry, but I live in London and I've seen so much car crime that I'm completely unobjective.

colacubes · 07/09/2008 19:57

Id rather I have to say I have been following this thread and whole heartedly agree with you that cammelia is a tit!

The comment about your rich friends cam who drive cars sos not to be noticed was the best, if they are sooo rich yet so indiscrete how the bloody hell do you know their worth, cause sure as eggs is eggs you wont have seen their bank statements. Something must give it away, house, clothes, holidays, or they may be bloody liars and live like poor folk drive a crap car and just say they are minted, either way you definetley sound like a very bitter cammelia on here.

wombleprincess · 07/09/2008 19:59

what do you think?

MmeLindt · 07/09/2008 19:59

I am somewhat surprised that anyone wonders why the OP has namechanged given some of the comments on this thread.

I won't say anything more on security, that has been pretty well covered, I will say that you and your DH should return the R8 to it's homeland. I have rarely heard of cars, even very expensive ones, being stolen here in Germany.

And he can really drive it

Lizzylou · 07/09/2008 20:00

I agree Colacubes.
Have to say DH and I just don't "do" cars, can't understand the fuss, just to get you from a-b. But I fully understand that other people do, and it's a shame that you can't enjoy your dream safely. I would be constantly checking out if I had a bogey-nose if people were stopping to take pictures of me. But then, I have a Ford Focus, so very much doubt they would

Cammelia · 07/09/2008 20:41

Oh don't be so rude colacubes

Cammelia · 07/09/2008 20:52

Bitter? No, just taking the piss, the op on this thread is rather like someone showing off at school.

Rich friends? I said people I know, not necessarily close friends. And I know they're seriously rich because of who they are.

I'm not in the habit of lying and I'm definitely not a tit.

In fact before cola, the only person being rude and using unpleasant language was the op.

piratecat · 07/09/2008 20:52

ooh my car (1997) has a medium risk of being nicked, i feel so, not poor, yet so not rich now.

I quite agree with Cammelias sentiment.
Most of my insanely rich friends drive pretty normal cars. Ok. Audi or BMW. But that is pretty normal these days. They have nothing to prove to anyone. You wouldnt know just how rich they are until you actually know them.

Can the car be parked in a garage? And a tracker device installed. I would chat to your local cop-shop to get realistic advice on what risks are in your area and what's good to do to keep it safe - and more importantly - you & your family safe.
Lovely car - enjoy it.

WendyWeber · 07/09/2008 20:58

cod, OP would ratherbeincognito...

I don't know what an R8 is but if it is recognisable as being worth 90k then I would clear out some space in outbuildings and put it in there.

FWIW one of the richest people I know drives an S reg renault megane mini people carrier thing!

WendyWeber · 07/09/2008 20:59

Yes, & nil points for guessing.

WendyWeber · 07/09/2008 20:59

R8 is a footballer's car, CD...

CountessDracula · 07/09/2008 21:01

I care little about cars tbh
I wouldn't recognise an R8 if it bit me on the arse (unlikely I know given lack of teeth) (unless it is an amazing new fanged motor)

WendyWeber · 07/09/2008 21:02

They slither up behind you on the motorway with an unusual little array of sidelights.

Presumably you pay higher insurance premiums because you own a desirable car.
