OVERWHELMED! Please come and help me sort my life/house/money out!

I need a slap, sleep, and a hug -- and some advice.

My life is in near-chaos, almost every corner of it has something nasty lurking and I need to sort it out, but looking at it is overwhelming!

Things I need to do:

  • Write a book (so need to fit regular hours into every day for work)

  • Look after my 5 y/o and 6 month DS

  • De-clutter and clean (thoroughly) the house

  • Lose weight! 3 stone

  • Sort out our finances - everything from switching providers, to reclaiming bank charges and everything else on Moneysavingexpert.com

Oh God... Where do I start? It's got so bad, everytime I start doing something, I convince myself I should be doing something else, so end the day having done fark-all except the very basics of housey stuff, like laundry, etc.

I know I didn't get into a mess in a day so shouldn't expect to get out of it in one day... But I need tips on where to start. Do I start cleaning one room every day? Do I write a timetable? Do i devote one night a week to money, one to decluttering...?

HELP ME PLEASE PLEASE HELP!

beautiful - we have a cleaner. it's the best thing I ever did, she just does a couple of hours once a week - before she comes i rush around chucking stuff in the laundry basket etc and it really makes a difference. rest of my life in complete chaos though! ps clean upstairs before downstairs - cleaning lady top tip

Jesuswhatsnext - I love it! LOVE your "older woman bossiness", EXACTLY what I need! Where do you live? I want to pay you to come over and do it for me!

The thing with my clutter is... I never think it's that cluttered, but it seems to be the overwhelming response whenever I ask anyone what they think I need to do to the house. EG, the estate agents all said it when we talked about selling the house. But there's not THAT much I want to dump, really... I need a second opinion when I throw stuff away, don't I? Hmm. It's all books... I buy books on everything, barely rread them then have a billion just lying around.

Storage is a great idea. A great idea. Where do I get nice boxes from?

hi beautiful - i live in suffolk if it helps?

(i would be more than willing to help if you need me?)(and not for money!)anyway my girl -
storage boxes - depends on your personal style/decor. i have lovley sea grass ones from tk maxx/habitat, but for kids toys probs plastic sturdy ones from the range or dunelm would be good.

books need proper shelves or end up looking a right mess, look around your house and try to think 'outside the box' ie. in my down stairs loo, over the loo i have put up about 4 shelves, painted with white gloss for ease of cleaning, just for books, with nice art work, a couple of candles etc this looks soooooo much more than a 'downstairs cloak'!

my home is cluttered by many standards, loads of pictures, books, lamps, cushions, rugs, china etc. its how you place it all that makes such a difference.

make sure that the kitchen is always clean, sink clutter free (wash up todays crap today, nothing is more demoralising than getting up to yesterdays shit!), cooker wiped down, surfaces clean, fridge sorted and clean.

always put washing and ironing away when you have done it, don't let washing pile amount to more than 3 loads at any one time. try and change all the beds about every 9 days (just get cheap and cheerful bed linen that can go in the tumble dryer and dosen't need ironing)

put toys (dcs can help) into toy boxes at bedtime, it can be part of your bedtime routine!, then sitting room becomes 'adult space' for the evening.

i would then put aside 20 minutes of energised tidying when dcs are in bed, every few days clean the bathroom (its for YOUR benefit, you deserve a nice place to relax )

if all this works for you, once a routine is established then move on to menu planning, weekly shopping lists etc, it may sound very boring but at the moment, for many people this sort of thing means the money saved can mean having a holiday/up-grading the car etc.

ok, am exhausted now, must take my weary bones to bed, hope iv'e helped (and not been too bossy

btw - i have perfected the above so that i can keep a large house and 3 people clean, tidy, fed and 'ready for anything' with approx 3 hrs of housework a week (it just take a will of iron [stiff upper lip emoction]

One step at a time. Take two days off work and leave the children in childcare.

Day One

Hire a skip. Use this day to declutter the house. Be brutal. Be very brutal. Go through every drawer and under beds and everything. Take everything you can to be recycled, but force yourself to fill the skip. You don't want to waste the money having hired it. Include the garage, the glory holes, everything. You can do this in a day, trust me. My house is oversized and I managed it.

Day Two

Spend the day on the internet sorting out all the changes and switches. Also buy yourself a calendar and diary and work yourself out a schedule for writing. Also join weightwatchers.

Looking forward - if you need to lose 3 stones the rate should be no more than 2lbs a week. In six months you will have lost the weight and be halfway through your book.

Can I just suggest making sure that when following this good advice, you don't do it alone? Make a list of what needs doing and allocate LOTS of it to your DH. It's not just YOUR life, it's his too.

BEAUTlFUL · 29/08/2008 10:30

I love all of you. Yes, will rope DH in as much as possible.

LOBVE the idea of bookshelves in the downstairs loo. Wish I had a downstairs loo now! We have an upstairs loo (downstairs bathroom, sadly) which I could utilise.

Thank you all SO much, I love getting an insight into how you all run your homes.

Will post an update next week.

Thanks too, Quattrocento, on the diet tips. I was thinking WW would take too long, but 6 months sounds ideal to be foxy again.

YOU LOT RULE!!
