Hi
Are there any older mums out there i.e. those who have had a baby at 35++. We are increasing in number.

When I was in hospital having DS1 at 37 (and 2 days!), I thought I was a rather old mum. However, in the next bed to me was a 46 year old woman having her 3rd baby - she'd thought she was going through the menopause, so didn't realise she was pregnant until fairly well advanced. Her new baby would be a companion for her existing grandchildren, she said with a rather rueful smile.

I was 38 when I had DS2 and 41 with DS3. Dh would like us to have another one, but my knees are now superglued together .

My MIL has been known to remark - otherwise, no way.

The only thing I notice is that a lot of people ask me "Is he your first?" about my son. I in my paranoid way interpret this as them saying I could have much older children and my son was an accident in the twilight of my years. or perhaps they are saying that he is so amazing in every way I must have been doing this for ages!

helsy · 19/02/2005 12:27

Had mine at 35 and 39. Just not ready or grown up enough before, and hadn't met the right man.
At my ante-natal checks, there were women accompanying their pregnant daughters and the mothers were my age!
Luckily, the area we live in seems to have more than the average number of parents in their 30s and 40s. At Dd1's reception class concert in December, my mum (who had me at 19) pointed out the row of grandfathers at the back of the hall with their video cameras and I told her that all of them were fathers of reception class children -not one under 35.
I've never had comments about being a wrinkly old mum, as dd1 calls me, but then I still dress like an overgrown student.

maxlily · 19/02/2005 13:58

I had first at 36 and 4mths, then 2nd last May at 1mth before 38.....In Edinburgh it seems 30 something early 40s is the norm, but its birds of a feather....its definately attitude not age!!No one has commented on my age, but I am young in attitude and dare I say it looks....but as long as theres love who cares!!! So I never assume anyone who looks older is granny, i wait until Im told etc...Heres to freedom of choice to have your children at whatever age...its part of women having a voice! My gran had her last baby at 48! I think it will go without comment very soon what age you are, and just be acceptable to have a baby in your teens, twenties, thirties or forties.....My sister is having her first this April at 40 (partner 49), my friend at 36 (partner 42) and another friend due her first in August age 41 (partner 39)...the list goes on...

So what part of the country are we all in. As i said not many older mums in Slough.

I thought I would be considered ancient to be having my first at 37 - but at my booking appointment my midwife informed me I was by no means old and she had loads of first timers in their early 40's. Though I was the oldest in my antenatal class - but I would like to think I didn't look it.

P.S I live in Nottingham.

I'm sure I read somewhere that there are now more first time mothers over 35 than teenagers having babies?

I think I am a lot calmer at 37 with a nearly 5 months dd than I ever would have been in my twenties and I am planning to have two more babies.

Freckle · 21/02/2005 14:35

When my older sister had her first at age 26 (and 1 day!), she was classed as an older mother. I suspect that makes me geriatric......

PhDMumof1 · 22/02/2005 10:16

I was 33 with no 1, but DH was only 25 >aaah bless

network · 22/02/2005 13:34

Perhaps we should start a thread for older mums with younger husbands. Could be a bit racey!!!!!!

Hi!

almost40 · 22/02/2005 13:46

I have had 2 DDs at 35++. No one said anything, but I've received some strange reactions when I mention the thought of possibly having another.

binkie · 22/02/2005 13:50

37 for ds, 38 for dd. It's only now (on brink of 43) with the last few years flying by that I realise that (for me) I sort of made it in under the wire. (BTW, in London. Pretty normal among friends & other parents at school.)

Times have changed. MIL, having her 4th at 32, had the obstetrician say "getting a bit old for this game, aren't we?"

Pagan · 22/02/2005 13:54

Just realised I fall into this category now. I'm 36 and have just had DS (4 weeks old today) and DD is 17 months old.

I still don't feel responsible enough - shall go and paint my toenails in protest

PhDMumof1 · 22/02/2005 15:45

Let's start a racey thread then on younger husbands - who's going to go for it?

vala · 22/02/2005 15:56

I was almost 39 when I had DS in 2002. No negative comments from friends or rels, but apparently I don?t look my age?
Only sort of negative comment I have had was from my GP when I went for my IUD fitting. She asked if this was to be a permanent method of contraception and when I replied that I was planning on having a 2nd child in a year or so her response was that I had better not hang around too long as I wasn?t exactly a spring chicken!!
Not gone for number 2 yet as desperately trying to sell house and move to downsize mortgage to allow me to become a SAHM . Can?t afford to stay here and only have one wage.

vala · 22/02/2005 15:58

PhDMumof1, My DP is 7 years younger than me
