If you try ringing SS around here, the phone just rings non stop and no one answers it. Pathetic isn't it.

moondog · 06/08/2008 20:11

Then I was threatened by my boss and had to get union in. She accused me of time sheet fraud amongst other stuff.

moondog · 06/08/2008 20:12

Then she resigned.
Then i went after edu. dept. as discovered they were acting illegally.

Yes, I thrashed the fuckers. Grovelling apology from Chief Exec and so on.

moondog · 06/08/2008 20:15

It nearly killed me though. Worst year of my life it has been.

moondog · 06/08/2008 20:15

He is great. We have late night meet ups over a beer and a rollie. He is PLO scarf wearing Marxist. We are mates forever after all this.

lol at point 1. Is that so you can give them a perfectly pedicured kicking?

Number 5 is a very good point indeed.

Throw your mag-weight around as much as poss. They'll be wishing they wore their brown pants today.

I agree that it is really upsetting seeing this happen. what response (apart from just wanting a response) do you want from SSD? what should they do. Do you know where this family live? when they knock on the door if you do what action should they take? I agrree that the current structure and approach of SSd - esp. Child and family is poor. I agree that it should aim to work preventatively but gen. react when it is too far down the line for preventative work. I also know that I have worked in a v.v busy social services dept. in Lonodn in adult mental health and on duty we would take at least 60 - 70 cold calls a week from people with concerns. we did our best to answer them all and triaged and prioritised and did visit lots and lots of people referred and we'd cold call. DH worked in child and fams. and the cases he dealt with were really awful and he used to go way above and beyond, gewtting to clients houses for 7.30am to help with school runs etc. when parents had kids who were school refusing - never mind he was leaving me with our 3 under 3s for breakfast. The response you got was very poor. But when I see this generic, yeah, social services are just crap it annoys me because there are lots of crap drs, nurses, teachers, solicitors etc. too.Yes, the structure of SS is bad but there are ltos and lots of good social workers who really work hard on behalf of their clients with very little acknowledgement for the good work they do.

jimjamshaslefttheyurt · 07/08/2008 09:01

My experience of social services is that they are useless. Sorry. I'm sure there are lovely social workers but ime they are totally ineffective. I barely bother to complain about anything these days but have already sent one written complaint about SS this year and am gearing up for the next one (separate issues).

The social services department I have contact with is a zero starred one (or maybe it has one now), so it has been assessed as crap and my experience is that it is.

Social workers won't get acknowledgement for good work when whatever it is they are doing doesn't result in any help for families who need their services. Or when their system actually makes things harder for the families trying to get help.

However in my complaint I did make sure that I stated that the OT and the social work assistant had both been helpful and supportive.

mackerel · 07/08/2008 09:13

jimjam, sorry you had a bad time. i worked for a 3 star borough and for a copunty SSd and the difference is money. I could do stuff for clients in the 3 star one that in other boroughs or areas would have been disallowed. So care plans etc. could be creative and the use of other services etc.I did get good results for cleints. i didn't bounce around being nice and lovely but a little bit useless. I had lots of colleagues who did the same. there are so many flaws and problems with social services as it is currently set up. From training to structure to what soc. workers actually do and feel able to don - lots of assessment but not really trained for specialist intervention and work unless extra training is undertaken in therapeutic work. The structure in most areas mean reactive as opposed to preventative action in the area of childrena nd famillies certainly. hopefully cod or soc. services know where rthis little girl lives and maybe they can work with the family etc. I accept that people have bad experinces but that doesn't equate to all social workers being useless.

largeginandtonic · 07/08/2008 09:25

Excellent

Asking for feedback a very good idea. I really hope they do have some idea who this little girl is.

Not sure what SS will actually do though, can only hope you throwing your intellectual (hehe) weight around spurs them on and makes them all very nervous.

It is disappointing to think if i had seen similar they may disregard me as i have no weight per se to throw around. Unless you count baby weight

Good luck

EffiePerine · 07/08/2008 09:25

God that's depressing. But well done for making a stand (hope the pedi is successful as well )

Hassled · 07/08/2008 09:28

Cod - only thing I would add to your plan is to copy your local MP into any emails/letters you send - and make sure that other recipients can see that the MP is copied in.

I used to work for social services (admin), having gone there from the private sector, and was amazed and angry at the levels of inefficiency. Three different people entering the same data into three different IT systems because they didn't have the cop (or money) to sort it out more effectively with data transfers etc. Was doing a Certificate in Management at the time and used my experiences in SS as a case study in how not to manage a department, then sent them a copy when I moved on . They must have loved me.

noonki · 07/08/2008 09:29

Cod that is horrible
I would do all of the above things

by the count boss do you mean MP? if so do it they all jump to attention when the MP comes to call

JimJAm - SS can be soooooooooo rubbish,I once threated to take a child home unless some went to visit it them that week (not after the next case meeting...in 8 weeks time)

but it is essential that they are informed of all incidences so that they can build up a complete picture. If the family is known to ss, the incident will go towards a decision being made on any action ss will take.
