Just ordered some reusable nappies of the net, tots bots nappies and motherease air rikki wraps. To ecomomise, I have also bought some fleece liners and boosters, what does everyone think of these? Just asking have I bought the some duds or are they ok. What has everyone else bought, and which ones do you recommend?

First nappy is on!!! Was very straightforward, almost as easy as putting on a disposable. DS2 has a huge bum now and has filled out the dungarees I have put on him, I just hope this doesn't mean that some of his other clothes won't fit as these are quite roomy.

So far I have found that he isn't such a wriggly worm to b/feed, he just lies there with his legs stuck straight out. Sitting up seems a bit more of a challenge for him and he has had to adjust his crawling technique, didn't take him long mind you I left him in the livingroom for 10 seconds and he pulled the fender off the fireplace onto his hand, must get that fireguard urgently!!!

He now wouldn't normally be changed until early afternoon (unless he does a poo) so I will see if we get there without any leaks!

susanmt · 19/02/2003 12:13

I am on holiday (at my parents) and have for the first time decided to travel with my washable nappies. Has been great and now I feel there will be no need to buy disposables ever again (unless going abroad I suppose).
Feeling smug about it as my parents are all impressed - sil was here the other day with her ds2 in disposables - only 3 months) and it was my folks who were giving her the cloth nappy propaganda ....!!
cerys - where in the Outer Hebrides are you getting nappies from???? I live there and had no idea there was a local nappy maker!

cerys · 19/02/2003 13:46

susanmt, the lady is called Michaela and she makes Minki nappies, which are stuffable. She lives on the Isle of Lewis and her website makes me want to sepnd vast amounts of money! www.nappiesbyminki.co.uk (tried but failed to make a link )

cerys · 19/02/2003 13:46

not only can I not make links but I can't spell "spend" either...

bea · 19/02/2003 16:00

girly! small world!!!

Did you buy a wrap as well? rikki L if so then! i think we might be buyer and seller!!!!

i just posted them off this afternoon!

Does your real name begin with F?

If so! fancy meeting you here!!! ha! ha!

Girly · 19/02/2003 18:04

Bea, spooky! I am looking forward to getting them. It really is a small world.

Demented · 19/02/2003 19:53

I know it has only been one day but I think I am converted!

No leaks or anything today, changes were easy and it was a great feeling to put the poo down the toilet rather than wrap it up to sit in a landfill for the next 500 years!

Went to IKEA this afternoon and bought multi packs of facecloths - £1.50 for 10 and a spray bottle and have made up my solution for the wipes. Unfortunately don't have a clean nappy left to try overnight but will wash all the nappies and start again tomorrow, just have to speak to DH about when I can order some more!

Have you used your nappies yet Girly?

Girly · 19/02/2003 21:46

No not yet demented, am waiting for the rest of my orders and then throw myself in at the deep end! Have washed, twice, my tots bot and stuffable and ca't wait to get them on him! OMG I am sooooooooooo sad!

Demented · 20/02/2003 00:09

Girly your so restrained in waiting for the rest of the order. After my triumphant posting earlier things took a bit of a nose dive. I didn't realise DS2 had done a poo (have a bit of a cold and he had done two already today so didn't imagine he would go again) and he must have been sitting on it for some time anyway it had mixed with the pee and went quite messy, poor soul now has a slightly sore bum, I had also decided to try out the cloth wipes and was spraying the solution onto the wipes, the spray was creating a fine mist in the air round about and DS2 must have breathed it in and he started to cry. So tomorrow I will try the solution in a tub with the wipes. The messy poo had to be rinsed off in the toilet with the flush and the booster part of the Tots Bots fell into the pan and then I dropped the fleece liner although fortunately it didn't disappear, once I had fished it all out of the loo I had to carry it dripping wet down the stairs to the nappy bin.

Still love them though and can't wait to get going again tomorrow, I was putting a disposable on DS2 tonight and tore it, grrrrr! DH has told me that I can order the rest middle of next week if a big cheque that he is expecting comes in tomorrow, fingers crossed!

PS Don't worry I won't detail every nappy change every day!

Honeybunnie · 20/02/2003 02:15

I've been washing my resuables about 5 times, as the bathroom light died a death and I didn't change the bulb (assigned dh to change it as it was under DIY, not housechores). He didn't fix it, so we where without a light in the bathroom for the night. Baby had to be changed before she went to sleep, so dh changed her in our bedroom and dumped to disposable nappy (used all of my 3 reusables)in to the washable nappy bin in the bath (is't it obvious that it was a washble nappy bin, IN THE BATH). Washed the entire lot, without checking, as you would with wet stinky nappies. Then realised, when the wash had finished, there was bit of plastic bits (chemicals to absorb the we and leftovers of the plastic wrapping).....stupid dh.

Dh needs to be reminded that the waste bin is by the door of the bathroom, not the otherside of the room in the bath...doh.

Will try out my reusables tommorrow.

Actually, I'm now slightly relieved that I'm not the only one who left their child in a pooey nappy for hours because they couldn't smell it. I do sympathise though.

I'm trialling two Motherease types (one with poppers one with velcro), a Tots Bots, Motherease wrap with velcro and a Tots Bots wrap with velcro. Definitely prefer the poppers so far - for some reason it seems to fit more snuggly on ds and looks more comfortable. Will probably try a matching wrap with poppers at some stage.

Definitely can't get on with the paper liners ... going to try the fleecy ones next.

I am cheating somewhat in that I'm only using one reusable a day to get into the swing of it more (and it does mean that I've only had one pooey one to contend with so far!) but I figure that every one reusable I use is one less disposable in the landfill right?

Ds has gone to nursery today though so disposables all day

GeorginaA · 20/02/2003 08:44

Another thought... I like the idea of making my own wipes but I really can't see me getting on with them quite yet. You know those new wet toilet paper wipes thingies their advertising at the moment - are they suitable for a 21 month old do you think? They'd be flushable unlike normal wipes wouldn't they?

elliott · 20/02/2003 09:22

georginaa, I take a pragmatic view as well - ds gets nappies provided at nursery (3 days/week) and also I am going to stick with disposables overnight. I'm definitely using fewer though, which has to be a good thing.
It is getting easier as we get into the swing of things, and I think I'm getting less squeamish about rinsing the poo in the toilet!

Though I do have one problem - most of his clothes have become too small. I wonder if anyone has suggestions about what brands are good for cloth bums and short legs. ds is 15 months but still in 6-12 month clothes, which fit perfectly in disposables. 12-18 month trousers and dungarees are still much too long in the leg. I have a couple of pairs of H&M 9-12 dungarees which seem to be pretty good, but looks like I'm goign to need to go clothes shopping pretty soon (so much for saving money )

GeorginaA · 20/02/2003 09:40

I know what you mean elliott - ds is 21 months but only just got in to 12-18 month clothes (and the legs are a bit long on him! I always choose trousers that are more stiff in the legs now and able to be rolled up - he hardly wore the sweatpants I bought because the legs were so long and the fabric too soft to roll!).

Fortunately, he's quite slim (well, apart from the pot belly, bless!) so I just notice that it's a bit more snug with the reusables. Some of the 9-12 month that fitted okay still no longer do though Am a bit worried that he'll grow out of the 12-18 months clothes more quickly as a result.

elliott · 20/02/2003 09:44

That's a good tip about trousers - ds hardly wears them these days since they are either too long or too tight round the tummy ( he has an enormous belly, though not very fat elsewhere!)

GeorginaA · 20/02/2003 09:51

Dungarees also seem to be a lot looser around the bottom area on most brands (well, I say most ... I've had H&M and Mothercare I think! Oh and a pair of Osh Kosh but I hasten to add that my mother bought those - I don't have that sort of money to spend!!) but I do find them more fiddly to put on.

Girly · 21/02/2003 08:13

Hooray, Just used my new tots bots overnight and his bottom was loveley and dry, no leaks, no probs, it was so easy even dh could not complain! I cannot wait for my large order to come from twinkle.

A tip for dry pailing is put a couple of drops of lavender oil on a muslin and lay this on top of the soiled nappies in the bucket and it stops nasty niffs!

zebra · 21/02/2003 09:32

Elliot: if you don't put trousers on your DS, what does he wear in winter? Dungarees?

Adams are too big in the waist/bum for my tots, even in cloth nappies. I don't think I'll ever buy trousers from Adams again. But maybe they tend to fit well on a normal size child in cloth?

Demented · 21/02/2003 14:42

We used the Tots Bots overnight for the first time last night too. Nightime was the time I was most concerned about but DS2 was fine, had a booster in the nappy and no problems.

He is however in disposables today , just can't get them washed and dried fast enough (do only have three of them though).

bea · 21/02/2003 18:33

the big bottomed, can't squeeze dd into anything and john wayne waddle, was the reason why i switched to fuzzi's, kissaluvs and ella's house hemp....

fuzzi's still hit and miss, love the ella's house... but wish they came in more patterns/colours... love kissaluvs, gorgeous colours.... hmmm!

today has been a fuzzi morning, ella's house hemp aftenoon and now a kissaluv evening!!!!

think i'm going a little mad!!!

elliott · 21/02/2003 18:40

zebra, yes to dungarees, we haven't tried cross dressing yet But seriously I haven't found a pair of trousers to fit him for months, even without the cloth bum!

Will try Adams - and anything else with a 9-12 month size - guess its just a question of getting to know the brands again.

Girly · 21/02/2003 18:58

Having just hosed down a pooey nappy in the shower i now realise its a good idea to add a fleece/paper liner in all versions of any nappy!

Just put ds to bed in a tots with a cute Rikki wrap(courtesy of Bea) and plonked him in bed and am now off for a stiff drink (need one after all that poo!)

Am short of fleece liners as Twinkle forgot to send them in my last order. Anyone know of a cheap way of making your own?

GeorginaA · 21/02/2003 19:48

Tried the Tots Bots nappy today - was a bit taken aback just how bulky it was! Was very cute and very absorbent though ... but .... still!

Did we come to any conclusions about leaving the nappies in the mesh bag and bunging them straight in the washing machine btw?

Mocha · 21/02/2003 20:34

Hi there,
I'm fairly new to this site. We use Motherease Sandys with Air Flow wraps and flushable liners during the day and disposables at night. I, however still use disposable if I go out. I wet pail the nappies and do a nappy wash every 2-3 days. I do them at night and set the drier so that they are dry by the morning. I will hang them outside in the summer though as I prefer it when they have had some fresh air about them.

elliott · 21/02/2003 21:02

Don't know, georginaa, but I'm still using my old carrier bag method and see no reason to change so far
I'm coming to the conclusion that ds is a 'light wee-er' and have steadily been reducing the size of terries I'm using - now down to a 40cm terry pad folded in a rikki wrap. It seems so simple I wonder if I'm missing something
