Honeybunnie · 29/01/2003 03:37

Just ordered some reusable nappies of the net, tots bots nappies and motherease air rikki wraps. To ecomomise, I have also bought some fleece liners and boosters, what does everyone think of these? Just asking have I bought the some duds or are they ok. What has everyone else bought, and which ones do you recommend?

demented, call me a slob, but so far I've just been putting the nappies in a carrier bag and throwing that out after I've put the washing on. I couldn't really see that I needed a 'pail'. I have been washing every day (she hastens to add....)

bea · 18/02/2003 19:27

Girly! i've been clothiing since dd was about 13 months - so i'm a very late starter... but very very addicted!

washable wipes are a brilliant idea, and i must confess to thinking of doing that as well! i mean just chuck it in the bucket with everything else right? at the mo i use cotton wool and just flush that down the loo with the poo!... but i can't reconcile myself to the fact that when i wie dd's very sticky pooey bot, where do i get rid of all the pooey gloop on the wipe? do i have to go and squah that out at the toilet as well?

However i have head great thing about the wipes, and the chance to make your own little sprays to use is all very addictive!!! i know of some websites that give you little recipes... and i hate to be a traitor but as i've mentioned before the discussions on the cloth nappy forum on UKP are very very informative and full of good advice....

ooo!!! i love nappy discussions!!!

and to add to the dry vs. wet i don't wet pail as the idea of all those nappies swishing around that water after a day or two... ugh! i dry pail and my nappies are as lovely as they ever were!!!

bea · 18/02/2003 19:30

oh yes!!! and get yourself a nappy net!!! brilliant and save you sticking your hands into ickiness when transferring into washing machine!!!

GeorginaA · 18/02/2003 19:37

Can I ask a stupid question - do you rinse the nappy before sticking it in the dry pail?

My ds (21 months) still have very runny poos that seem to go everywhere and I've got a trial pack of washables. First go was a bit of a disaster because I had a terrible cold and didn't smell that he'd done a poo almost straight after one so he ended up sitting in it for hours (without fuss) and had horrible nappy rash (poor mite).

Anyway, getting to the point, I sort of panicked and just chucked the nappy straight into the washing machine (after flushing the paper liner) and hit pre-wash then washed it (horrible waste of resources I know) rather than putting it in the pail. (I was ill I wasn't thinking straight!) So, in that situation would you rinse before putting in the pail and if so, how. Rinsing under the tap in the bathroom doesn't seem quite hygenic somehow!

Bea, check out ebay for washable wipes, in the baby items section

cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=1261&item=2308288745

I'm not sure if this link will work, you could always copy and paste.

I am also addicted and have visited ukp and bought a few items there and from twinkle and nappy lady! dh does not know yet! have spent loads but what the hell am having a great time.

With the wipes and poo i think you swish them in the flush along with the liners? Unless anyone else knows a better way!

Demented · 18/02/2003 21:36

Elliot, not a slob at all, in fact I had been thinking about doing that myself I just thought there may be a particular reason they had to go in a pail or special nappy bag.

Girly that's my DH's profession too although he has started his own accounting business and now works from home so may be trying to buy into a certain lifestyle. I did the figures for him (hee, hee) and he didn't think it was a big enough saving to be bothered with but is willing to give it a go as we are currently going much more environmentally friendly. We are going to try the washable wipes too, so long as the nappies are successful enough to be making another order.

The info from the Nappy Lady today included a recipe for washable wipes:-

1 1/2 cups (1 mug) water
2 tbs oil (baby oil or olive oil)
2 tbs baby wash (eg liquid baby soap) or a few drops of baby bubble bath.

If you make up a wash solution, change it every couple of days.

I believe this can either be poured over the wipes or sprayed on as needed.

The only thing I have been slightly disappointed with is the fleece liners that came with the nappies (in saying this we haven't actually road tested the nappies yet). I was charged £1 each for them and expected a little more than a crudely cut out piece of fleece. Has anyone tried making their own liners? Do you just buy fleece from a fabric shop? I would imagine it would work out cheaper.

Sorry for the rambles, have just read this back and it doesn't make a great deal of sense, I still just can't believe nappies can be so exciting!

Demented · 18/02/2003 21:37

Girly, posting at the same time, good idea about Ebay, will go and have a look. If your DH is anything like mine it certainly won't go un-noticed when you have spent any cash!

Girly · 18/02/2003 21:44

Demented, these accountants ALWAYS catch you out! But hey ho their lives would be so miserable without us! Was caught out big time when I sneekily bought the really expensive baby born changing bag, he arrived when the package did and got to it first! Boy did I have to grovel for at least 5 mins!

I have become an internet addict, but, it was his idea to get broadband! haha.

Baxk to nappies, which ones have you got?

Girly · 18/02/2003 21:48

Another recipie for washable wipes is lavender oil, mixed with a carrier oil and water in a little spray bottle, esp good for sensitive skins. ms ds has ezcema so am going to try this.

Demented · 18/02/2003 21:55

Girly, I've only got three so far but they are all Tots Bots and I keep looking at them drying on the radiator, they just look so cute. You'll need to let us know how you get on and how you compare the Tots Bots to the Nature Baby Stuffables, these were the two recommended to me too, I just felt the Tots sounded easier but was slightly worried they would be too bulky but now that I have seen them I think they will be fine.

Have you just ordered a few just now or have you gone for the 'full package' so to speak?

Demented · 18/02/2003 21:57

BTW, sad I know, but which wraps have you gone for? We went for the Motherese with the poppers in the end, Airflow I think.

Girly · 18/02/2003 21:59

I have gone for the lot, a trial set from NL, the bulk of my order from twinkle and some second hand from ukp, I found the Nl to be very comprehensive, but found twinkle easier to use as you could see the items before ordering.

Maybe we could monitor each other progress over the next few days!

Girly · 18/02/2003 22:00

MotherEase Air Rikka wraps, (i think!)

elliott · 18/02/2003 22:12

georginaa, I rinse the liner (and nappy if very pooey) in the toilet flush (hold onto one corner and dangle rest in flush).
My ds can do very sticky poos but I seem to be getting better at fixing the nappies and liners so they don't go everywhere (I am finding the fleece liners better than flushable, they just tend to wrinkle up).
Even without a cold I am finding it a bit tricky to tell when he's done a poo - the smell just doesn't permeate through like a disposable - think you just have to be a bit more aware about needing to check.

Demented · 18/02/2003 22:28

Dead exciting Girly, I have just been to Twinkle too, loads of nice pictures. I would definately like a fleece wrap for DS2's bedtime nappy, they had a gorgeous one with moons etc on it, but will probably end up with the red one as it is cheaper, although still gorgeous!

Just been for a look on E-bay too but will have to return in a couple of weeks or so as cash-flow isn't at it's best.

I will update tomorrow after we try the nappies, hopefully I won't be in tears because they are leaking everywhere!

GeorginaA · 19/02/2003 07:56

Interesting you mention the paper liners crinkling up - I noticed that too and made it so much harder to clean up - I wondered if it was just a one off or because I'd left him in it so long.

Incidentally, I use a nappy bin anyway for disposables but I don't want to go over to completely washable straight away (would like to build up from 1 washable a day until I'm confident and will probably still use disposables for the one day a week ds is at nursery) - any clever ideas for storing both in the same bin without it getting too confusing? Don't really want to buy another bin but do like the way it contains all the smells (especially if I'm only going to be washing every other/every third day!)

bea · 19/02/2003 08:33

ooo! you really becoming addicted Demented and Girly! just wait till you start seeing all the other comnbinations you can get!... i sold an Under the nile nappy on the b and s forum at ukp a couple of days ago and when parceling it off was lamenting to dh about letting it go as it was one of my most faveourite nappies, so soft and cute and cuddly (not to mention the very first one i bought!!!)... i was ... ahem.... sniffing it and oohing and ahhing about how cute it was... dh just looked at me with pity! i'm such a sad woman!!!

back to very pooey nappies? just hold them under the flush of the toilet, and stretch nappies, until poo comes off, failing that whne things are really bad, stick it washer for pre wash is what some people do... thankfully things haven't been that pooey yet!

for very cute nappies... have a look at The Cloth Cabin
www.theclothcabin.co.uk/

very very cute!

bea · 19/02/2003 08:34

hope you all managed to get the gist of what i was writing there... didn't bother to proof read as you might have guessed!!!

cerys · 19/02/2003 08:41

I had the same problem with paper liners and never use them now.
Yes, you can make your own fleece liners. I got a metre of fleece from a fabric warehouse and cut round one I'd bought as a template. Mine have a very homemade look to them, but the material cost about a fiver and I got more liners than I knew what to do with! Would have probably been better if I hadn't been using my late grandma's scissors which need sharpening...!
I used to use a Sangenic lined with a carrier bag, but now I've got 2 in nappies I bought a trash can style bin with clips on the lid. It cost £1.50 from a cheap shop! I also bought a nappy mesh because I was concerned at the number of carrier bags I was throwing away, and the mesh just gets washed with the nappies etc.
Oh yes, and I always dry pail, even when I did a nappy wash every day. I do rinse the worst nappies first, using a shower spray attachment on the washbasin, which is next to the loo.
Stuffables are great - I use them as night nappies on wriggly DD1 and I've also ordered 2 Minki nappies which are the same concept. I'm currently waiting for them to wing their way down from the Outer Hebrides to South Wales!

Girly · 19/02/2003 09:33

GeorginaA, keep the disposables in a nappy sack, in the bucket!

Bea, i have just bought an under the nile from ukp?.... Do they need wraps, its all gets very confusing as to what goes with what!

Demented looking forward to your report.

bea · 19/02/2003 10:38

hi girly, yes the under the nile needs a wrap, it is an incredibley absorbant nappy! (but then they all are as dd is quite a light weer!)

you didn't buy them off me did you... how long ago was it since you bought it?

KeepingMum · 19/02/2003 10:44

Blimey, must get internet access at home, am missing out on on these discussions. Thanks for the info about wet/dry pailing. Maybe I will not bother with filling the bucket next time. I normally pour the yucky water down the sink in the bathroom (I also rinse the poohy nappies in the sink - me and dh are drawing lots on who is going to clean the U bend next) and take the empty buckets down stairs, I can see it would be much easier if we didn't have to do this. When you use a net - do you wash the nappies in the net or take them out first?

Girly · 19/02/2003 10:51

I just got my first package from the nappy lady and its FAB! They are so lovely and soft i cannot wait to put them on ds!

Girly · 19/02/2003 10:52

Bea, i bought them only yesterday!
