How do you incorporate pink into a boy's bedroom?

Ok, I have always believed myself to be liberal and not pandering to sterotypes or beliefs.

HOWEVER, DS (3.5) wants pink on his new bedroom walls. I have conceeded and bought a pink tester pot (as well as blue, yellow and green) but am at a loss as to how to co-ordinate the pink so that 1. I feel comfortable and 2. He is satisfied with the outcome.

He would want it ALL pink, DH says do a wall in pink, I just want a 'little' pink if I have to.

Pink is Ds's favourite colour at the mo, but I do not want to have to paint the whole room or wall again in a year's time if he starts complaning about it being girly. Equally, I don't want any of his future friends taking the mickey out of his pink room.

God, what is wrong with me??? Should do what DS wants, shouldn't I?

Anyway, any advice would be great. Going off to a 2 hour meeting now, so will not reply to any suggestions until later, but PLEASE suggest!

lots of them like pink ime
it s nice colour

Tissy · 07/02/2005 14:05

Pink and Blue stripes might look quite funky!

nutcracker · 07/02/2005 14:05

Could you not get a few pink accesories instead, that way if or when he changes his mind you haven't got to paint over anything.

iota · 07/02/2005 14:06

my ds's have a pinkish carpet in their rooms - the carpet was there before the boys

charleypops · 07/02/2005 14:07

You could buy an 8x4ft board (or get it chopped in 2 if it won't fit in the car) from the diy shop, paint that pink and nail it to the wall?

Marina · 07/02/2005 14:07

That's a good idea Tissy.
Ds has dark rose pink velvet curtains (inherited) and loves their warmth. They tone surprisingly well with the aqua wash walls.
Maybe if you opt for curtains/rugs in a pink mix then it will be less difficult to go for a revamp when he does, inevitably, start getting the bleagh! reaction to anything pink.

snap nutty!

noddyholder · 07/02/2005 14:09

pit up a poster of the magic roundabout ermintrude is pink

miranda2 · 07/02/2005 14:10

Do all the walls different pastel colours - use seasidey accessories and go for a 'beach hut' theme? Then you can have one wall pink without it being girly if his friends are sensitised to that sort of thing.
Or stripes is a good idea, would look v.funky - maybe pink/blue/yellow? A pain to do though - separate walls would be easier!
Ds has lemon yellow walls, with 'Le Pig' curtains and duvet - quite a lot of pink in there, plus flowers, but farmyardy rather than overtly hearts and flowers IYSWIM!
I wouldn't go for plain pink accessories myself - they tend to be much more fluffy/girly than just the colour pink!

DaddyCool · 07/02/2005 15:27

you bloody don't!!

Poshpaws · 07/02/2005 17:21

Thanks for the suggestions, especially the different themed walls and a pinkish accessory (sp) or 2.

DC, I am with you, but feel that as it is DS' bedroom, he should have a little of what he wants.

Shall go for a minimal effect.

Thanks again.

My DS likes pink and he is 3

Personally, if I were giving him a choice and I didn't want him to ahve pink i'd offer a choice of 3 colours you don't mind him having. Or i'd paint the whole room pink and bite the bullet if he wants it blue in a year or two.

My DS has a big picture of a flower on his wall and when I asked him if I could change it for a Thomas picture he got all shirty and said 'NO!'.

frogs · 07/02/2005 20:21

ds's room has one pink wall -- he used to share the room with his big sister, now shares it with his baby sister. He was the one who wanted the pink wall, though.

Lots of his friends have been here to play, no-one has ever said anything. It does look a bit odd with his collection of Action Man posters, though!

mishi1977 · 07/02/2005 20:26

I would paint the room a base colour and use ink themed things maybe offer to paint a pink pig on one wall? Im dreading DS being like this as I know DH will flip..lol

KatieMac · 07/02/2005 20:27

Paint some lining paper pink and cut out shapes......Pigs,elephants,sports cars, cows etc (what ever he likes) and use spray mount to put them up

misdee · 07/02/2005 20:44

i would do barcode style stripes on one wall, using pink as one of the colours.

maisystar · 07/02/2005 20:51

ds wanted pink bedroom but i talked him out of it cos i wanted mine pink! (the dining room has a fair bit of pink furniture in too and we seem to pick up a lot of pink 'stuff' too-didn't want pink overload) sooo he has yellow and orange walls and pink cushions and stuff.

we LOVE pink in our house

jodee · 07/02/2005 20:53

Had a wry smile to myself reading this thread - only last night ds (nearly 5) had a nightmare and had to come into our bed, he said he was trapped in an all-pink bedroom and couldn't get out!

Gobbledigook · 07/02/2005 20:54

LOL Daddycool!!

My ds3 (5 months) is in a pink bedroom atm because we've just moved in (therefore not my choice of decor of course!) - everyone thinks I'm mad as he won't notice but I feel very uncomfortable about it!

Blossomhill · 07/02/2005 21:00

Just want to say that my ds went through a pink phase at about the same age. By the age of 4 he was totally against it and hates it now (aged 7). Just seems a shame to go to all that effort when to be honest he will probably hate it in a few months.
Maybe pink duvet covers and a rug may be an idea? Or go with painting one wall pink and then once he goes off the idea you can colour that blue as well

Poshpaws · 07/02/2005 21:00

Thanks for the further suggestions.

We were looking at pictures of beds yesterday and he pointed to a Princess, pink 4-poster and he said 'I want that bed and Baby can have my old cotbed'.

Had to break it gently to him that we had already ordered him a straight-up pine bed.

Oh go on, give the lad pink. He likes pink. He wants pink. And the only way we'll get beyond these stereotypes is through some nice pink-loving lads like yours and Cod's and my nephew.

Poshpaws · 07/02/2005 21:06

MI, I know, I know.

I just...can't...bring myself to do it
