What's the name of that inaccessible Devon village with legends of inbreeding?

Years ago my Devonshire aunt told me about a village (Dartmoor I think) that in olden days was so inaccessible that people had odd genetic mutations. Just popped into my head today, can anyone expand on the legend (or disprove it?)

Apparently Clun in South Shropshire is a bit like the village your aunt described.

Barnical · 06/07/2008 18:11

I think it's norfolk not devon LOL (NFN)

Lilymaid · 06/07/2008 18:28

Boston, Lincs and Wisbech are well known for it.

Greensleeves · 06/07/2008 18:34

Rocester in Staffs is also known for inbreeding

Buckets · 06/07/2008 18:38

No, Dartmoor wasn't the name of the village LOL I know that! Village may have been on or near Dartmoor although it may have been inaccessible due to being at the bottom of a cliff or gorge or something. It was Coombe Something and they all had/have big eyes apparently.

Flamesparrow · 06/07/2008 20:16

Lol I was thinking the same as LL with half of devon being Coobme sumat... a bit like saying it was a place on Wales with "Aber" in it

LynetteScavo · 06/07/2008 20:17

ROFL!

I'd never noticed that about Clun.

I did go to a fair in Spain once, and I'm sure there was a lot of in breeding with the people running it. Funny eyes.

SammyC · 06/07/2008 20:18

It cant be Devon as all us inbreds eat our young and morris dance the remainder of time................LOL

bonkerz · 06/07/2008 20:21

tiverton!

margoandjerry · 06/07/2008 20:26

Clovelly? Not Coombe Something but not easy to get to either (well, not to get to the bottom of it anyway).

My father was born in a very small town in Wiltshire. One my aunts has done a family tree going back to about 1600 - there are around 500 names on the list, every last one of them lived in this very (very) small town. I'm thinking in-breeding would actually have been quite hard to avoid

Sure it wasn't Dorset? Portland has that reputation.

giddykipper · 06/07/2008 20:29

I thought it was Forest of Dean

Doodle2U · 06/07/2008 20:33

long shot

Mercy · 06/07/2008 20:34

Probably applies to a lot of places in the UK in the 'olden days'

I think it's just one of those myths tbh

Mercy · 06/07/2008 20:36

Although Princetown could be a contender.

pookamoo · 06/07/2008 20:40

No, she's right - I saw an item on the local news where they went to look at it.
It was on Dartmoor somewhere...
Will see if I can track it down.

wheresthehamster · 06/07/2008 20:43

According to Uncyclopedia it's the whole county
