What's the name of that inaccessible Devon village with legends of inbreeding?

Years ago my Devonshire aunt told me about a village (Dartmoor I think) that in olden days was so inaccessible that people had odd genetic mutations. Just popped into my head today, can anyone expand on the legend (or disprove it?)

It's definately Norfolk you're thinking of. Pick any village ther and you will see the signs.

Try this one:

This village is Clicket. It's actually on Exmoor and in Somerset.

It was a really interesting programme, actually!

wheresthehamster · 06/07/2008 20:46

Widecombe-in-the-moor?

There's a bit about inbreeding

pookamoo · 06/07/2008 20:48

Here's more on the village:

Not sure about the genetic problems, but I would imagine that would have been a problem all over the place in the past, as people didn't / couldn't travel very far.

ilovemydog · 06/07/2008 20:49

clovelly?

Mercy · 06/07/2008 21:07

Interesting! I did initially think a village on Exmoor was a more likely place than Dartmoor.

Either that or the Isle of Sheppey. Locals used to talk about going to the mainland. But it does have some amazing scenery to be fair

cheesesarnie · 06/07/2008 21:16

sounds like where i live(not me obviously)

Dear Tiredemma
My parents live in Clun.
Does that mean I'm mad?

LynetteScavo · 06/07/2008 21:42

I've been wondering for a while about the Sun Inn in Clun. Is the beer garden any good?

Bowddee · 06/07/2008 21:47

Beer garden is small, but it's a nice little pub. I phoned my mum and checked for you!

BigBadMousey · 06/07/2008 21:50

There is a town very near me (in Devon) where the effects of inbreeding are pretty obvious even today.

I know a doc who has been practising in the area for a long time and says he deals with an awful lot of medical problems which have come about due to inbreeding.

I have two local sets of friends who have married their cousins - it's not at all uncommon round these parts and no one seems to think anything of it.

Surely 'tis better than marrying an outsider - Cheesesarnie - you know of what I speak!

DeeRiguer · 06/07/2008 21:51

holy moly
i was in clun last week!
and, strangely it was a pub but dont know name decent coffee, rainy day so did not check out beer garden

LynetteScavo · 06/07/2008 21:51

So which town is it?

cheesesarnie · 06/07/2008 21:52

BigBadMousey.i am the outsider.17 years on and im just being accepted!lol

LynetteScavo · 06/07/2008 21:53

Oh, Thankyou, Bowddee. I used to go a lot as a child, and remember is as being fantastic. Have never taken my DC's, though. Might do so next time I'm pasing.

cadelaide · 06/07/2008 22:03

Slightly off topic but concerning abandoned villages........
We were 16 and had been reading about the village of Imber in Wiltshire, taken over by the MOD during the war, and no access to the public. Decided one day to cruise up on our mopeds and check it out. Rode all the way through, feet up in classic Easy Rider style, on our 49cc machines during a major exercise. There were helicopters, people with guns,(may have been explosions, although that could be my imagination getting the better of me!) It was great and we were laughing our heads off and having such a great time. Got to the other side and sat down for a rest, when a land rover screeched to a halt, and we were threatened with being locked up for the rest of our lives etc.
Probably quite dangerous but no regrets, they should have put bigger signs up or something.........!!

LynetteScavo · 06/07/2008 22:07

LOL!

bramblebooks · 06/07/2008 22:09

Oooh, cadelaide, that reminds me of when I lived in a commune and did travelling theatre. Really. It was some time ago, but we visited the 'lost village' of Tyneham in the Dorset area - same background of mod takeover during the war. OMG at arriving during a major exercise!

Ledodgy · 06/07/2008 22:14

Margo it's easy to get to the bottom of Clovelly it's getting back upto the top of it from the bottom that's hard. I did it last year when pregnant and do not recommend it.

BigBadMousey · 06/07/2008 22:33

Yeah, they help you get to the bottom of Clovelly by kindly removing £10 from your wallet at the top of the hill...

....we get in free though

Pavlovthecat · 06/07/2008 22:35

Buckflastleigh has this reputation, so does tiverton in my professional knowledge. But they are not remote villages.

Ledodgy · 06/07/2008 22:36

Lol Mousey the food aint cheap either think I had the most expensive pasty in the west there.

Buckets · 07/07/2008 08:25

My aunt may be visiting my mum this week actually so I might get the chance to ask. Apologies in advance to anyone who lives there (although I doubt they'd have broadband LOL.)
