How much does it hurt having one done? Am debating getting one on my lower back.

Are you pleased with yours? Wish you never had it done?

i have 2, yes they hurt (hot razors was a good description!) but its over quickly. I have one on my shoulder (i cant remeber which one without looking in the mirror - thtas how easily you forget them, its been there for 10 years now) and the other is my lower back, the latter definatley hurt more. I dont regret either as they both have personal meanings to me

megandtyler · 30/06/2008 21:33

i have one on my shoulder which i adore and would like to have more. i think it's more annoying than painful.oh and it feels lush when they rub it with cream when they have finished.

fairy15 · 30/06/2008 21:40

i have 4 & love them all & can't wait to get my next, i find them very addictive. i have 2 on my lower back which was uncomfortable, 1 on my foot which was more uncomfortable & 1 on my side from my hip up to my ribs & it was painful when it was near my ribs but i would'nt say enough to scream just to think oh bloody hell that hurts! think about it for a long time & look at a lot of patterns before you have anything done & think about where yu want it as its nice to be able to hide them up if you want to.

fairy15 · 30/06/2008 21:42

oh yeah would say its more like someone scrathing you.

wangle99 · 30/06/2008 21:47

Wow all these replies I can't believe so many of you have tattoos! I have only just been able to log back on and read them all

Hate to say it but I fancied a nice black tribal swirly thing on my lower back but had never heard them be called a tramp stamp before lol!!! perhaps a rethink. I definately do want something done but what I'm not sure... pain certainly won't put me off now having read what you have all put.

Not sure where to look for a design - presumably the tattooist would have designs to look through if I'm not sure what to go for?

OP posts:
katpotat · 30/06/2008 21:53

My sister and I designed both of mine, the tatooist had a play around with it till we got it perfect....remember it's with you forever, so make sure you love it

gingeme · 30/06/2008 22:22

I would love to be clever enough to design my own. As the next one is definately my last(funny I said that after ds4) I want it to be a bit special but wouldn't have a clue where to start.

cyteen · 30/06/2008 22:40

A good artist should be able to design something for you

gingeme · 30/06/2008 22:49

Yeah would I have to book an appt for both at the same tme? Ive had two done by the same fella but always gone in and chose one of his designs.

Buckets · 01/07/2008 09:48

On a fleshy bit it honestly doesn't hurt as much as trying to wax/sugar your own legs/bits. Remember that episode of Friends where they all do sugaring in Monica's bedroom? It's not that bad.

evansmummy · 01/07/2008 09:53

I have three, one on shoulder that was designed from a drawing of a flower fairy, one of a small purple flower with a tribal design around it and one of a dragon on my inside lower arm. Got them done a year apart starting my first year at uni when i was 21. Incredibly painful, but as someone else posted, a kind of gratifying pain.

I regret the one on my arm. Can't cover it up easily and as a mum who's completely changed lifestyles since having them done, i feel i look a bit silly with it now. Would get it removed if i had the money. Don't mind the other two quite so much though.

As others have posted, go through a recommendation, and look after it. The colours of my first one have faded and it doesn't look nearly as good as it did.

Fleecy · 01/07/2008 20:15

I got one done on my lower back ten years ago - but it's a small round design, about 1.5inches across, and it's a bit higher up than most so it's quite private. It doesn't show if there's a gap between my top and trousers cos it's still hidden by my top(although to be fair, I do try to avoid having a gap between my top and trousers having had two big babies within the last two years ).

Maybe you could think about something like that? V. similar position but different shape and slightly more hidden?

I was told it would feel like stinging nettles and I do remember thinking that was quite a good description. So yes, it did hurt but not that much.

DforDiva · 01/07/2008 22:05

i think almost every brit women have one in the lower back.
personally wont have one myself even free. not for me.

KarisTiasMum · 01/07/2008 23:33

My partner owns a tattoo studio ( he is the body piercer) and people expect me to be completely covered in all sorts of weird and wonderful tattos/piercings... but i am really not. i have one tiny one on the inside of my wrist, as i am massively scared of needles and used it as a little tester..

from one wimp to anther, it wasnt too horric and i am planning lots more! i think i will give the body piercings a miss though....

i stick out like a sore thumb at tattoo conventions, i am the only person the building who has skin coloured skin! i need to start to blend in!

KarisTiasMum · 01/07/2008 23:37

also, being in the studo a lot and dealing with customers, i recommend the internet for designs... its like that the tattoo studio you choose will have designs, but most of the people in your area will have chosen those and you will end up with the same as everyone else!

if you have an arty friend, see if you can come up with a design together... tattoos should be individual and unique! dont get something, thats 'in fashion' that you will later regret!

thats why its taking me so long to get tattoo number 2!

eddiejo · 02/07/2008 10:36

I had mine done years ago - designed by me and done by a very tatood man.

It hurt sooooo much I was crying and he actually lit up a joint after about ten mins saying he had never had anyone cry before.

AND he offered to stop after doing two lines - of course I asked him not to because it would look pretty stupid.

Never regreted it and absoloutly love it

Remember fear is temporary and regret is permanent!!!!!!

2boyzmum · 02/07/2008 13:16

I had one done when I was nineteen: a rose on my upper arm. It hurt, but was bearable. Now I'm forty and a teacher at a grammar school and I wish it was gone. But I can't have it removed because of all that red.

Volkl · 02/07/2008 13:34

i have 2 and just had a new one on my lower back... it didnt hurt at all, it was irritating but nothing more. The one on my shoulder hurt at lot more however that was MANY years ago

teslagirl · 02/07/2008 20:08

Another cat amongst the pigeons: please be aware that you WILL be judged if you sport large, always visible tatts when you go to hospital! It's always nice to think that the NHS staff are all caring, sharing and non-judgemental. Rubbish. As with any any walk of life, the second you stride into the scan room/orthopaedic consultant's room/ surgeon, tatts at the ready (esp if you're 'past a certain age'), they'll brand you as lower class and less clever and be thumbing through your notes in search of the alcohol abuse etc. It's a fact. I've seen it first hand, and it isn't pretty!

frisbyrat · 02/07/2008 20:37

Oh good. When I go in for my hernia op, shall I pin my Oxford MA certificate over my tat?

Buckets · 03/07/2008 11:08

LOL I like to think reactions to my tattoo are quickly adjusted by the fact I am basically Margot from The Good Life in all other respects .

cyteen · 03/07/2008 11:11

While they're judging me on my ink, I'm busy judging them on their terrible hair dos/bad breath/shite people skills/up own arse attitude, so I like to think it all balances out really

I guess it depends whether you're getting one as a style statement or whether it's an intrinsic part of you.

alisonrose · 03/07/2008 23:22

I worked on a care of the elderly ward for a while as a student and believe me girls when you've seen a tat on an 80 year old it ain't got the same trendy appeal! AND they blend into one big, blue, blobby mess over time!
(wink)
