My sister-in-law showed my 6-month-old baby the middle finger right in front of me, and I honestly didn’t know how to react. I was completely shocked.
Earlier that day, I had looked after her dog while she was at a party. When she got back, she was telling me about the party. I was drinking some water when I suddenly noticed her staring at my baby and sticking up her middle finger at her.
I looked at her in disbelief, gave an awkward smile, and asked why she was doing that. She just replied, “She’ll learn it sooner or later anyway.”
I lowered her hand, but ever since then I’ve been thinking that I should have thrown her out of my house. I keep blaming myself for not reacting more firmly in the moment.
What do you think? Am I overreacting, or was this completely inappropriate? I’ve also had the feeling for the past 11 years that she has something against me, so maybe that’s why this has affected me so much.

I wouldn’t even flip off her dog….

I feel sorry for her poor dog. I'd worry leaving a baby and actually even a dog) with an adult jealous of her brother's wife, so I'd probably not see much of her, family events aside, and for teh poor dog's sake, taking care of him.

Was she drunk? Why did you think she would be a suitable Godmother? She sounds awful making such an aggressive gesture to a baby...who does that?

WilmaRubble · 14/07/2026 07:17

I think it’s aggressive as well. I would stop seeing her completely.

Nearly50omg · 14/07/2026 08:04

Tell her she can keep her vile behavior to herself and not to ask you to dog sit ever again!!

Just to give some context:
We’re all in our early thirties.
She and her brother are the youngest of six siblings, and they were very close until I came into the picture. I never had a problem with their bond. My only issue was that I always felt she never really accepted me.
Eventually, I told my partner (now my husband) how I felt, and he admitted that he also thought she was jealous.
She’s been single for 15 years, has no children, and everyone in the family feels sorry for her because of that. You also have to understand that my husband’s family all live in the same village. His sister literally lives just down the street.
Making her our baby’s godmother was actually my husband’s idea. It was his way of saying, “Hey, you’re my sister, I love you, and you’re important to me.” I didn’t want to get in the way of that because she’s family.
The middle finger incident happened afterward…just four days ago. Of course I’d love to take the title of godmother away from her now.
The problem is that nobody else was there when it happened, and her brother can’t imagine how bad it actually looked or the way she meant it. That’s why I’m posting here. I wanted to know whether I’m overreacting or whether everyone else also thinks it was as ugly and inappropriate as I do.
Naturally, he downplays it because she’s his little sister and he has a hard time taking her behavior seriously. But she’s not my blood, so I see the situation very differently.

I’m exclusively breastfeeding, so I can’t drink alcohol.
I only mentioned reaching for my water bottle to explain why I didn’t see her make the gesture. I had looked away for just a second to grab a drink, and when I turned back, I saw her giving my six-month-old baby the middle finger. That’s what made it such a shock.

She sounds classy. And possibly unhinged.

HelenaBun · 14/07/2026 09:17

I hope this finally clears up why I mentioned the water. I was simply explaining why I looked away for a moment. I haven’t had a drink in two years, so there was never any alcohol involved.

Why should i drink alone with my baby and her dog in the house anyway thats so weird to think

OP, your SIL sounds both unpleasant and unhinged. Her relationship with her brother sounds unhealthily close, if she’s jealous of you as his wife. I don’t think there’s much point in your trying to be friends with her - she’s shown categorically what she thinks of both you and your baby - so I wouldn’t allow her in the house unless DH is there.

Coralsunset · 14/07/2026 09:31

She sounds very weird. I would distance myself from her as much as possible.

HelenaBun · 14/07/2026 09:45

Okay i will definetely distance myself from her… i tried my best for her to like me but it makes no sense anymore at this point

Thank you all for your opinions i feel supported by ypu guys. Its a bit difficult here to find someone to talk to about this because she is family and it is a very close family.. so i do not want to be the source of the drama.. i feel a bit trapped here..

But now that i heard your support guys i know the drama ist legitimate!

Was she drunk? Text her and say it is never to happen again.

HelenaBun · 14/07/2026 09:56

She definitely wasn’t drunk.. at most, she may have been a little tipsy. We could talk normally..

what did she do then?
