Sister in law shows Baby the middle finger

My sister-in-law showed my 6-month-old baby the middle finger right in front of me, and I honestly didn’t know how to react. I was completely shocked.
Earlier that day, I had looked after her dog while she was at a party. When she got back, she was telling me about the party. I was drinking some water when I suddenly noticed her staring at my baby and sticking up her middle finger at her.
I looked at her in disbelief, gave an awkward smile, and asked why she was doing that. She just replied, “She’ll learn it sooner or later anyway.”
I lowered her hand, but ever since then I’ve been thinking that I should have thrown her out of my house. I keep blaming myself for not reacting more firmly in the moment.
What do you think? Am I overreacting, or was this completely inappropriate? I’ve also had the feeling for the past 11 years that she has something against me, so maybe that’s why this has affected me so much.

I’d cut her off. She sounds like a fucking idiot.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 13/07/2026 21:23

She sounds weird and I’d ask her not to swear at my baby but I wouldn’t cut her off over this. What’s the back story?

HelenaBun · 13/07/2026 21:23

What makes this even harder for me is that I chose her to be my baby’s godmother. I genuinely wanted to extend an olive branch and improve our relationship.

What was the relevance of you drinking water?

So there’s a backstory of poor relationship beheeen the two of you?

HelenaBun · 13/07/2026 21:28

Yes indeed she never really accepted that i took her favorite brother i think.. my man thinks that two…but come on we are now 11 years togehter …

if she said ‘ she’ll learn it sooner or later anyway’ it sounds like she’s teaching her rather than telling her to fuck off, surely. Which is quite funny , exactly what an auntie should do ? Had she had a drink ?

Gardenisablooming · 13/07/2026 21:29

Well it was inappropriate and immature but luckily your dc won't be scarred for life. Maybe see a lot less of sil.

HelenaBun · 13/07/2026 21:30

She’s always made little digs at me and, at least in my opinion, has tried to come between me and my partner. I kept trying not to take it too seriously and gave her the benefit of the doubt, but after what happened, I’m starting to question whether I’ve been ignoring the signs for too long.

@HelenaBun Never ever leave her alone with your baby! How unhinged to do this to a baby. Even if they are too young to understand it's very aggressive and it must have been hurtful to you. So sorry. Avoid her as much as you can.

HelenaBun · 13/07/2026 21:32

She’s always made little digs at me and, at least in my opinion, has tried to come between me and my partner. If my child were older, I might think she genuinely wanted to teach her something, but this is a helpless baby who can’t learn anything yet. I think she was trying to insult me with that, and yes, she had two glasses of cocktail but was still able to drive and hold a normal conversation.

I wouldn’t even flip off her dog….

I think you may have had one … or two, writing a comment like that. Hard to think of another excuse for you.

rollonxmas · 13/07/2026 21:40

That’s awful. I’d cut someone out who did that. Just weird.

Decacaffeinatednow · 13/07/2026 21:41

So she drinks and drives too?

She's sick in the head. Who does that to a baby?

HelenaBun · 13/07/2026 21:46

She drove a bicycle. I know that wasn’t good either, but it’s still better than driving while drunk.I’m German btw, so I might not always express myself perfectly in English

On the other hand I’m sure your six month old child won’t remember this.

Get rid of her now before baby realises what she’s like!

what age are you? You think it is funny to teach a child to swear?

Pinkissmart · 13/07/2026 22:55

For heavens sake, just tell her not to do it!

mumumental · 13/07/2026 23:21

It’s an aggressive act so I would have to talk to her very seriously and see how she reacts .

OohOohOohWahAhh · 13/07/2026 23:27

Weird post. Your 6 month old obviously wouldn’t process or remember it. You should put boundaries in place with your SIL ASAP as a matter of course. She’s got some issues choosing to flip off a baby…
