Found £20 in street WWYD?

Found a £20 note today on the pavement round the corner from my house. I think I should hand it in to the Police but am put off by the fact I know I'll have to wait an age in the police station. It was quite a posh road but it could have been dropped by a little old lady, cash-strapped student or someone's cleaner. Just found out I'm pregnant and don't want any bad karma. What shall I do?

i would keep it. my mum would hand it in and my mum is always right. however i think the ol bill will prob wonder why you have bothered. buy yourself something for the babe and think no more about it.

SNormaStanleyFletcherInit · 25/06/2008 18:19

hand it it

SirDigbyChickenCaesar · 25/06/2008 18:20

hand it in. if no ones claims it yuo get to keep it.

woodenchair · 25/06/2008 18:20

I would probably put it in my pocket. I've lost money before and would never think of going to the police station to see if anyone had handed it in

forevercleaning · 25/06/2008 18:21

GIVE IT BACK TO ME NOW!!!

Cadbury · 25/06/2008 18:21

if there was no prospect of finding out who it belonged to, I'd put it in a charity box.

castlesintheair · 25/06/2008 18:22

Keep it

WelliesAndPyjamas · 25/06/2008 18:23

I suspect police are busy enough as it is so spend half and give the rest to charity

expatinscotland · 25/06/2008 18:31

you should give it to me. that way you will know it went to a good cause and i will feel no guilt about it.

grumpybum · 25/06/2008 20:36

I wanna know what you did with it in the end?

SNormaStanleyFletcherInit · 25/06/2008 20:38

yes

Jackstini · 25/06/2008 20:38

Report it to local police station by phone. Very doubtful anyone will claim so you will get it anyway.
If they do - be proud you will have restored someone's faith in the British public!

bearmama · 25/06/2008 20:44

I found a fiver once in the student house - I handed it in. The next day I found another fiver in Miss Selfridge. I gave it to a girl in the changing room. A few months ago i found a fiver in my favourite charity shop. I handed that in (would have been so scummy not to).

But if i found money in the street and i was poor I'd keep it as i dont genuinely dont think it would find its way back to the original owner.

Haylstones · 25/06/2008 20:56

I would hand it in to the police without a doubt. I always hand money over if I find it in a shop. My brother found £5 in a park the other day and kept it
I bought stuff in Matalan the other day and had ds in the trolley in is car seat. When I got outside and lifted the car seat out I found a pair of £7.50 boxers (unpaid for) underneath so went back inside and waited in the queue again to pay for them. Dh was astounded but I couldn't have done anything else

Boyswillbeboys · 25/06/2008 21:48

Give it to charity. I agree with Grumpybum, Police will probably wonder why you bothered and you'll have to wait ages. Last summer hols found a handbag thrown into my front garden (purse missing so assume bag had been snatched from someone, money nicked then bag thrown away, but there was passport, driving licence etc still in it and lots of personal stuff like family photos etc). Dutifully took it down to police station (with two under 5s in tow), waited hour or so and police seemed totally uninterested. Didn't ask for any of my details, when I found it or anything, I guess they have bigger things to worry about (specially in my neighbourhood..)

morocco · 25/06/2008 21:56

cannot believe anyone hands money in to the police. am

they probably nick it anyway

question to those who would hand it in (serious) if you lost £20 in the street, would you really go to the police station to see if anyone had handed it in? love to see their faces lol

I never hand in wallets etc unless no address in, usually (sadly we seem to find a few) I trace them myself through details in the wallet and take it back in person. i can't imagine the police would do anything with it. maybe I am too cynical

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 25/06/2008 22:02

finders keepers

notasheep · 25/06/2008 22:04

would spend it

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/06/2008 22:13

When I did find a £20 note I placed it in middle of pavement and weighted it down with stones so it wouldn't fly off and get lost. The money would have been lovely but I didn't need it. I figured that either the owner of it might find it (down a cul-de-sac with lots of old folk) or it might make the difference to someone else. If someone 'undeserving' got it well thats not my conscience

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 26/06/2008 11:29

I found £80 once blowing about in the street - I handed it in. An old man came into the station later on, totally distraught. He'd dropped his pension money and wasn't expecting anyone would have handed it in but thought he'd try. Apparantly he was beside himself as didn't know how he could put money in the elec meter or buy food that week.

I am so glad I handed the money in.

Tas1 · 26/06/2008 20:06

I would give it to charity.

Hecate · 26/06/2008 20:39

I'd hand it in. I'd only feel too guilty that maybe that £20 was the difference between someone feeding their kids or not. Plus, even though I'd found it, not handing it in would still feel like theft to me - I'd know it's not mine!

I know I'd feel this way because I have found money before and I handed it in.

morocco · 26/06/2008 21:02

£80 I would hand in
but maybe not £50

hmm, am pondering where my 'line' must be between 'loose change' kind of money and 'serious dosh'

how many people on here would go to the police station if they lost £20 (still interested0

PeaGreene · 26/06/2008 21:09

I wouldn't dream of asking the police if I thought £20 had disappeared from my purse. Why would I? I'd assume either I'd been very stupid and spent more than I thought, or that I'd dropped it in a shop whilst getting other money out.

WendyWeber · 26/06/2008 21:15

I think if I found a £20 note, or a tenner, or even a fiver, I would hand it in - it could easily have been dropped by a pensioner (like SKSS's) or a child (like my DS2, aged 13-14, who once had his paper-round wage fall out of his pants pocket as he went round a roundabout on his bike, and someone spotted it fall and handed it in)

£10-20 isn't that much to most adults, but to some people it is a lot.

And if you do get it back in a month or whenever, then you can give it to a charity.
