Found £20 in street WWYD?

Found a £20 note today on the pavement round the corner from my house. I think I should hand it in to the Police but am put off by the fact I know I'll have to wait an age in the police station. It was quite a posh road but it could have been dropped by a little old lady, cash-strapped student or someone's cleaner. Just found out I'm pregnant and don't want any bad karma. What shall I do?

I'd keep it. I've lost money loads of times so figure it all evens out in the end

When I was a 17 year old saturday girl in a posh department store I found a bus pass holder with (iirc) about £700 cash in (this was 15 years ago).

I handed it in via my manager who took it to security ho returned it to it's rightful owner. I was lauded by manager and security and told I'd surely get a nice reward from the lady. I sat back and waited...

Still waiting.

I've twice found money (£30 and £100) sticking out the cash machine. After checking for Jeremy Beadle I've given half to charity and kept half.

£20 I would definitely just keep.

I have returned a purse I found in a taxi with money in it. Had owner's address plus tickets for a do. Got a nice bunch of flowers for that.

I left my purse in my empty trolley at Sainburys the other day - some lovely person handed it in but they didn't have a name!!!

thehouseofmirth · 26/06/2008 22:14

Well, I accidentally spent the actual note in the supermarket today but have decided to hand it in. The way things are with us at the moment £20 is quite a windfall but it isn't mine and I just worry that it belongs to someone who needs it even more than me. If I'm wrong and the owner hasn't missed it then I think I get it back if it's not claimed so then my virtue will be rewarded!

Absolutely HOM - you can feel very angelic today!

Mikafan · 27/06/2008 09:53

I'd have spent it. I don't think anyone who lost £20 would bother going to the police station. I'm cash strapped but I know I wouldn't bother because the vast majority of people who found £20 wouldn't hand it in - a sad indictment of our communities now days

Litterbug · 27/06/2008 09:56

keep it!

Its hardly a suitcase full of £50 notes is it!

Litterbug · 27/06/2008 09:57

And besides if I lost £20 I would think 'tough shit for me'

It would NEVER occour to me to go to the police station and ask if anyone had handed it in!

mistypeaks · 27/06/2008 10:17

But if you really needed the money and you'd lost it (like the old guy) maybe you would go to the police station on the off chance? In the past I have pocketed cash I've found but traced down wallets etc. Now I will be handing it in.

StrawberryPavlovatheCat · 27/06/2008 10:18

spend it

EffiePerine · 27/06/2008 10:23

Hmm, where is the cut-off point? I wouldn;t hand in a fiver or a tenner, but £20... I think I'd ring the police station and ask. They would probably laugh

StealthPolarBear · 27/06/2008 10:23

I would do something if there was any way of tracing the owner - obv if it was a wallet, or I found it in a shop etc. If it was a roll of notes then there's a question to ask anyone who rings up to claim it. A single note - it wouldn't even occur to me to hand it to the police, and if I found it in the street I'm afraid I would keep it.

I guess I have lesser morals that many.
Oh dear .

Very naughty of us, but dh and I once found £45 in a London Park and spent it , I saw £5, then dh saw a £20 note and then i saw another.

I know we should have handed it in to the police and we did sort of look for a police officer to hand it to but.....

if a mn lost £45 approx 5 years ago, I'm sorry but thanks for allowing dh and I to buy some very nice wine.
